I Rebuilt My Arcade for Free—Here’s the Reuse-First Playbook

A no-cost arcade rebuild is possible only when the parts you need are already on hand, donated, borrowed, or salvaged—and when you count every expense honestly. The practical playbook is to inventory the cabinet and components first, identify what still works, then choose software and controls that fit what you actually have. The specific parts and costs of this rebuild must come from the builder’s own account; the guides below explain options, not what this project used.

Start with the parts you actually have

Before choosing an emulator or drawing cabinet plans, make an inventory. Record each component’s condition and where it came from. Separate items you already owned from those donated, borrowed, salvaged, or purchased; note any repair, adapter, or replacement costs too. Without that accounting, “free” can describe the parts but not necessarily the finished machine.

  • Cabinet: Is it a restored arcade shell, an adapted cabinet, or a new build?
  • Computer: Record the host computer and operating system.
  • Display and power: Note the display model, connector, physical fit, and power requirements.
  • Controls: List the joystick, buttons, trackball, or other controls and how they connect to the host.
  • Software and games: Identify the emulator version and the lawful source of each game file.

This is the part that makes a personal “free build” account useful to someone else: it shows which decisions depended on the builder’s existing parts rather than implying that every reader can reproduce the same result at no cost.

Choose a cabinet around your space and salvage

If you already have a cabinet, inspect its structure, control panel, wiring, and available room before committing to a computer or display. A replacement screen must fit the opening and connect to the host; an old cabinet’s power and wiring should not be assumed compatible with newer components.

If you need to build a shell, ArcadeCab publishes free arcade cabinet plans and projects, including full-size and tabletop formats with measurements, construction photos, and printable PDFs. A tabletop cabinet can suit limited floor space; a full-size upright has a different footprint and construction burden. The plans are references, not a promise that all materials or tools are free.

Reuse is a credible strategy, but examples from other builders are not a bill of materials for this rebuild. In a separate Raspberry Pi-hosted cabinet project, the builder reused a secondhand JAMMA cabinet, its power supply, and speaker, and said a 19-inch 4:3 TFT display had been given to him. Those details illustrate how reused and donated parts can help; they do not establish standard dimensions or costs for your cabinet.

Pick the host and software that match your equipment

An existing computer may be the most economical host if it is usable and you already own it. A Raspberry Pi with RetroPie is another documented DIY route, but it is not evidence that this particular rebuild used a Pi. The Raspberry Pi Foundation’s RetroPie setup tutorial lists a Raspberry Pi computer, microSD card, display connection, and USB game controller among its supplies and walks through setup.

RetroPie is free-to-download open-source software built on projects including EmulationStation and RetroArch. Treat the Pi route as one option rather than a universal requirement: the right host depends on what you have, what your chosen emulator supports, and whether the display and controls can connect to it.

MAME is an emulation framework with a preservation purpose. Its official documentation says, “The primary purpose of MAME is to preserve decades of arcade, computer, and console history.” MAME Documentation 0.289 also says MAME can emulate over 32,000 individual systems from the last five decades; that is a count of systems, not playable arcade games.

Match controls to the games you want to play

For games built around directions and action buttons, a joystick-and-button panel may be a natural fit. Other games use a trackball, dial, or other control whose movement is not equivalent to a joystick direction. Decide based on the games you intend to run and the physical controls your cabinet can accommodate.

MAME’s Input System documentation explains how host input devices and controls map to emulated inputs, including switches, absolute axes, and relative axes. Once controls are connected, configure and test the mappings in the emulator. A trackball or dial needs an appropriate axis mapping; treating every control as a button or joystick can produce unusable input.

Use game files you are entitled to use

RetroPie’s setup guide cautions against pirated game downloads and points readers toward homebrew and official releases. Laws about copying and using game files vary by jurisdiction, so this is general information, not legal advice. Do not assume that owning an old cabinet or a game cartridge automatically gives you permission to download a ROM.

Compatibility also depends on the emulator and the ROM set. MAME’s documentation on ROMs and sets explains that some sets depend on parent sets and may require BIOS or device sets. A set prepared for an older MAME version may not work with a newer one. If a game fails to start, read MAME’s missing-file messages and check for a version mismatch, missing parent set, or missing BIOS/device set before changing unrelated settings.

Keep the “free” claim tied to a real accounting

External examples can show that secondhand or donated parts have been used in other cabinets, but they cannot verify what this builder reused or paid. A defensible zero-cost claim needs the builder’s own component list and cost accounting, including any spending on repairs, adapters, storage, or replacement parts. If something was borrowed, say so; if a part was donated or already owned, distinguish that from an item bought for the project.
