To send someone to a particular screen after an App Store install, combine Universal Links for direct app opening with a deferred deep-link mechanism that recovers the clicked destination after installation. The app should treat the recovered data as untrusted, hold the intended route until onboarding or login is complete, and navigate only to a validated destination.
What a deferred deep link adds to a Universal Link
A Universal Link is a standard HTTPS link associated with both a website and an iOS app. If the app is installed, iOS can open it and deliver the activated link context. If the app is not installed, the link falls back to the website. Apple describes this app–website association and the incoming NSUserActivity in its Developer documentation, “Allowing apps and websites to link to your content” and “Supporting universal links in your app.”

That direct-link behavior does not, by itself, preserve the original destination across an App Store install. After the user leaves the link, installs the app, and opens it, the app needs a separate post-install context-recovery mechanism to learn which link led to the install. A deferred deep-link SDK or service can match the earlier click to the new app session and return link data to the app. The app then validates that data and routes to an allowed screen.
- Direct deep link: the app is already installed when the user taps the link; iOS opens it with the link context.
- Deferred deep link: the user taps before installing; a service or SDK recovers the intended destination after the first launch.
- Attribution: measurement of an ad or campaign interaction. It may be part of the same provider’s service, but it is not the same function as carrying a destination into the app.
How the post-install flow works
- The user taps a provider-managed or otherwise tracked link containing a destination identifier.
- If the app is not installed, the link sends the user to the App Store. If it is installed, the direct-link path can open the app.
- The user installs and opens the app. The SDK starts its session and attribution requests.
- The provider attempts to match the new session to the earlier click and returns deferred link data when it finds a match.
- The SDK invokes its callback. The app validates the returned route and parameters, then either navigates or saves the destination until the app is ready.
Adjust’s “Set up deferred deep linking” guide documents this sequence, including the app’s ability to control whether the link opens immediately or is processed later. A callback result is a routing request, not proof that a user is entitled to view a screen or perform an action.

Set up Universal Links for direct app opening
Associate the website and app
Universal Links require a two-way association between the website domain and the app. Configure the website’s Apple App Site Association file and add the domain to the app’s Associated Domains capability. The domain and app configuration must agree; adding an entitlement alone does not establish the complete association. Follow Apple’s “Allowing apps and websites to link to your content” guidance for the platform setup.
Handle the incoming activity
When a user activates a Universal Link, iOS sends the app an NSUserActivity. Read the incoming URL, parse only the parts your app supports, and translate it into an internal route. Keep routing separate from URL parsing so the same validation rules can be applied to both direct and deferred links.
AppsFlyer’s “iOS initial setup” guide illustrates a provider-specific setup: use the provider’s link subdomain, add the corresponding applinks: entry to Associated Domains, configure the site association, and test on a device. A custom URI scheme may be used as a fallback in some configurations, but schemes are not uniquely enforced and can collide with another app’s scheme.

Choose a deferred-link callback model
SDKs differ in callback lifecycle, available fields, and when the app is expected to route. Decide how the app will retain and process a pending destination before wiring the callback into navigation.
| Option documented | Callback and routing behavior | Parameters or prerequisite stated in the cited guide |
|---|---|---|
| Adjust deferred deep linking | The SDK returns a deferred link after the service matches the click to an install or reinstall. The app can control whether to open immediately or process the link later, which supports waiting for onboarding or login. | The cited “Set up deferred deep linking” guide describes the flow and callback handling; it does not state a minimum iOS SDK version in the material summarized here. |
| AppsFlyer Unified Deep Linking (UDL) | The app-open flow triggers the SDK API; the SDK retrieves OneLink data and invokes didResolveDeepLink(). The callback reports found, not found, or failure and carries a deep-link object. |
AppsFlyer documents iOS SDK v6.1 or later as a UDL prerequisite. For new users, UDL returns deep_link_value and deep_link_sub1 through deep_link_sub10; other attribution parameters, including media source or campaign, return null in this method. |
For AppsFlyer UDL, agree on the expected parameter names with the people configuring the links and route on the values the app actually expects. Do not make a route depend on an attribution field that the callback does not provide for the relevant user type.
Validate link data before routing
Apple explicitly warns developers to validate URL parameters. Apply that rule to both Universal Link URLs and data returned by a deferred-link SDK: link values can be malformed, unexpected, or inappropriate for the current user.

Fast-charge testing conducted with drained iPhone units. Times measured from the appearance of the Apple logo as the unit started up. Charge time varies with settings and environmental factors; actual results will vary.
- WHAT’S IN THE BOX — Apple 20W USB-C Compact Power Adapter only. Charging cable sold separately.
- Allow only known route identifiers; map them to app-owned screens rather than treating arbitrary strings as navigation instructions.
- Validate each parameter’s type, format, length, and allowed values. Reject malformed or unsupported values rather than trying to interpret them.
- Check the signed-in user’s access to the requested destination. A link must not grant access or trigger a sensitive or destructive operation on its own.
- Keep actions such as purchases, account changes, or deletion behind the app’s ordinary confirmation and authorization controls.
- Define safe behavior for absent, unrecognized, or failed link data, such as opening the normal landing screen.
Hold the destination until the app is ready
A valid destination may still be premature. If the user must complete onboarding or sign in first, store the validated route as pending app state and resume it only after the user reaches an eligible state. Adjust’s guide explicitly describes completing onboarding or login before processing a deferred link.

This avoids routing during launch before navigation and authentication state are ready. Recheck authorization when resuming, because the user’s state may have changed since the link was received.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the taps and install paths users actually use
Test direct Universal Links and deferred installs as separate paths. Pasting a URL into a browser’s address field is not equivalent to tapping a link, and link behavior can vary across embedded browsers. Branch’s “Apple Universal Links” troubleshooting documentation, updated August 20, 2026, describes cases where Universal Links may not activate, including pasted address-bar URLs, same-domain clicks, JavaScript-triggered clicks without a user action, and some in-app browser contexts. It describes embedded webview behavior as conditional and suggests an intermediate page with a user-action button in some cases. AppsFlyer also notes that Universal Links work when clicked and that social-app support can vary. Verify the channels your product actually uses rather than assuming every webview behaves alike.

- The USB-C to Lightning Adapter lets you connect your Lightning accessories to a USB-C–enabled iPhone or iPad to conveniently provide three key functions—charging, data, and audio—with a single adapter. This adapter has a braided cable for added durability.
- Plug the USB-C end of the adapter into the USB-C connector on your iPhone or iPad, then connect your Lightning accessory.
- This adapter supports connection to most cars including those that work with CarPlay. You can also directly connect a USB cable from your car into the USB-C connector on your iPhone.
- Use physical test devices and the actual email, messaging, advertising, web, or social-app entry point that will carry the link.
- Test a direct tap with the app installed, then test an install followed by first launch with the app initially absent.
- Test delayed routing through onboarding and login, including the point at which the pending route resumes.
- Test malformed and unsupported parameters, a missing match, a callback failure, and the app’s normal fallback behavior.
- Test reinstall behavior if it matters to the product. Adjust’s documented matching flow includes install or reinstall; confirm the expected result in the actual configuration.
- Follow the provider’s device registration and debug prerequisites. AppsFlyer documents setup and testing requirements for UDL in its iOS guides.
Compare providers by the job the app needs done
Before choosing an implementation, separate the requirements. A product may need direct app opening, deferred post-install routing, attribution measurement, or a combination. Evaluate providers against the actual link sources and app lifecycle, not only whether a dashboard reports clicks or installs.
- Association and domain ownership: identify who configures the app-associated domain and association file, and whether a provider-hosted link domain is also part of the setup.
- Callback lifecycle: determine what the callback returns, how no-match and failure are represented, and whether navigation can wait for authentication or onboarding.
- New versus existing users: confirm which fields are available in each case. AppsFlyer UDL’s documented new-user field set is limited to the deep-link value and sub-values in the callback.
- Entry channels: verify behavior for web, email, social in-app browsers, and wrapped tracking links used by the product.
- Implementation and operations: check SDK prerequisites, debug workflow, domain or link migration implications, and the provider’s current terms and costs.
Keep attribution windows separate from destination recovery
Apple’s current AdAttributionKit documentation describes ad-measurement windows: click-through attribution applies when someone taps an ad and installs within 30 days; view-through attribution applies when someone views an ad and installs within 24 hours. Apple states that postbacks can arrive within 24–48 hours of an app launch. These are Apple’s published attribution windows and postback timing, not a mechanism for carrying an arbitrary screen destination through an install. Build destination recovery around the deferred-link callback, and treat attribution reporting as a separate concern.
