Choose a regular physical game card if you value a copy you can lend or move between consoles by inserting it. Choose digital if you prefer account-based access and are comfortable managing the game through Nintendo’s virtual game card or online-license options. Check the specific release before buying: a Game-Key Card is physical packaging, but it requires a download of the game data.
What is the difference between physical and digital Switch 2 games?
A regular game card contains the game software and must be inserted to play. A digital purchase is associated with the Nintendo Account that bought it and is managed as a virtual game card or online license. Nintendo also sells Game-Key Cards: these are physical cards that act as keys to download the game data rather than containing the full game. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card overview explains the requirements.

So “physical” does not always mean the game is playable directly from the card. Check the packaging and listing for the exact title and edition, especially if avoiding a large download is important to you.

| Question | Physical game card | Digital download |
|---|---|---|
| What do I need to start? | Insert the regular game card. A Game-Key Card also needs an initial internet-connected download and must stay inserted while playing. | Load the virtual game card to play offline, or use the online-license option, which checks for an internet connection when opening the game. |
| Can someone else use it? | You can lend the card, but two people cannot use the same card at once. | Loaded virtual game cards can be played by other users on that system. Nintendo also allows lending to members of your Nintendo Account family group; its FAQ gives a 14-day lending period. |
| Can I use it on another console? | Insert the card into the other console. | Virtual game cards can be loaded on up to two paired systems. Online-license play can be used on more systems, but requires an internet check to start; the game may be suspended after a period offline. |
| Can the same game run on two systems at once? | No, not using the same card. | No, Nintendo says the same game cannot be played simultaneously on multiple systems using either digital method. |
Details on virtual game cards and family lending appear in Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ. For the online-license option and digital purchase rules, see Nintendo Support’s digital game purchase guidance.

Will one format save storage?
Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, with some reserved for system use. Regular card-based play can reduce the need to download a full game, though updates and downloadable content may still take space. A Game-Key Card requires a full game-data download, and a digital game is downloaded to storage.
For expansion, Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards, not older microSD cards that lack that standard. Nintendo says compatible microSD Express cards up to 2 TB can be used; they are sold separately. Downloadable software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured video can be stored on one. Nintendo’s data-management page states that, at the time of its guidance, no individual game required an additional card to play, but that is not a permanent guarantee for every future release.

Where are save files stored?
Save data is stored in the console’s system memory, not on the game card. Using a card copy rather than an eShop download does not itself change the save data. Nintendo says supported save data can be transferred between consoles, and Nintendo Switch Online members can use cloud backups for supported games. Check support for the particular title before relying on cloud backup.

Which format should you choose?
Choose a physical card if you want
- A tangible copy you can lend, with the understanding that the card cannot be used by two people simultaneously.
- To move the game to another console by inserting the card rather than managing a digital license.
- To limit full-game downloads when the release is a regular game card, not a Game-Key Card.
Choose digital if you want
- Account-based access instead of keeping and carrying a game card.
- To load a virtual game card on paired systems or lend it through Nintendo’s family-group feature.
- To play offline after loading the virtual game card; online-license play instead needs an internet check when starting.
Compare the exact release before paying
There is no universal price advantage established for either format. Compare the current price for the same game and edition, and confirm whether the physical listing is a regular game card or a Game-Key Card. A Game-Key Card needs internet for its first download and first launch, sufficient free storage, and the card inserted to play. Nintendo says a Nintendo Account is not required to download its game data, and the console must be updated to version 20.1.1 or higher to play Game-Key Card software; check the title’s current packaging and requirements.
