Amazon.com US guidance specifically tells customers who accidentally sent Amazon the wrong item to contact Customer Service as soon as possible.
First, identify which order or return went wrong
Amazon’s order-based process can involve an original purchase, a return, and a replacement shipment. Before contacting support, check Your Orders and note which package contained the wrong item. Record the relevant order or return details and delivery dates so you can distinguish a wrong item received after sending something back from a wrong replacement shipment.

Available return or replacement choices depend on the item, seller and reason. Use the options shown for the affected order rather than assuming that every order qualifies for the same outcome. Amazon’s return and replacement guidance starts from Your Orders.

Write down the item you expected and the item you actually received. Keep the shipping and return packaging, labels, tracking information and any carrier drop-off or delivery proof. Take clear photos of the received item and identifying details, such as a model or serial number, if present. These are useful records for explaining the mismatch; Amazon’s guidance does not say every customer must submit all of them.

When describing the issue, be specific: identify the expected item and the item in the package, and note any distinguishing label or model information. Amazon asks customers to provide accurate, detailed comments in the return process, and says each return label is specific to that return. See its return instructions before sending anything else.
Report the mismatch through the affected order
- Open Your Orders and locate the original purchase or replacement shipment involved.
- Choose the return, replacement or support option available for that order.
- Explain plainly that the item received is not the item expected, and include the specific differences and relevant order or return details.
- If none of the offered options describes the problem, contact Amazon Customer Service promptly and identify the affected order and return or replacement.
Amazon’s published replacement directions begin in Your Orders. Its Return Policy says: “If you accidentally sent the wrong item to Amazon, please contact Customer Service as soon as possible.” That instruction is especially relevant if the item you mailed back was not the item Amazon expected.

Check who sold the item before escalating to the seller
Look at the seller shown on the order. For a qualifying third-party seller purchase, Amazon advises contacting the seller first. If the seller does not provide the expected help, you may be able to request an A-to-z Guarantee refund if the order and circumstances meet the program’s conditions. Check the claim options and eligibility shown for your order; the guarantee is not a universal route for all Amazon purchases and should not be assumed to apply to an Amazon-sold order.

Amazon lists materially different items and certain missing refunds among possible A-to-z claim situations, subject to eligibility and exceptions. Its guidance for eligible refund amounts also conditions coverage on requesting a return within 30 days of delivery and returning the item within 14 days after initiating the return. These are program conditions, not a promise that a claim will be approved. Review Amazon’s A-to-z Guarantee terms and the claim eligibility for the specific order.

Track the return and follow up on a missing refund
Check Your Returns for the return status, and retain carrier proof that the package was handed over or delivered. Amazon says refunds can take up to 30 days, depending on the order, transit, processing and payment method. If more than 30 days have passed since you returned the item and no refund notification has arrived, Amazon directs customers to contact Customer Service.

A replacement or refund is not guaranteed just because you report a wrong item. Return eligibility and the available remedies vary by order, item, seller, inventory and reason. Amazon’s Return Policy describes most items as returnable for a refund or replacement/exchange within 30 days of delivery, but this is a general policy statement with category exceptions—not a guarantee for every item or a promise about the resolution of a wrong-item case.
