Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat Settings: Privacy, Camera, and Microphone Controls

Use the GameChat C Menu to start muted or adjust camera video. Voice chat uses the Switch 2’s built-in microphone; video requires a compatible USB camera.

To control privacy in Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat, open the C Menu during a chat and adjust its microphone or camera-video settings. You can start chats muted, and you do not need a camera for voice chat: the console has a built-in microphone, while sending video requires a compatible USB camera. For a supervised child, parents manage friend approvals and camera permissions in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app.

Mute your microphone when you join GameChat

The Switch 2 has a built-in microphone for GameChat voice chat, so a separate microphone is not required. Nintendo says the console adjusts microphone volume to the surroundings and filters background noise and game audio. To avoid transmitting your voice as soon as you join, open the C Menu during GameChat settings and select Mute microphone when entering a chat session. You will enter muted and can unmute when you are ready to speak. Nintendo’s GameChat overview describes the console’s built-in microphone.

Turn off or limit camera video

Camera controls affect video, not voice. During a session, use the camera-video settings in the C Menu to control how much of your camera picture is displayed. You can also stop video transmission without ending voice chat by closing the physical privacy shutter on the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera. Nintendo describes the shutter as switching between displaying your picture and shutting off video transmission during a chat; it does not mute the console’s microphone. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 Camera information.

Do you need a camera for GameChat?

No camera is needed for voice chat. To send video, connect a compatible USB camera. Nintendo recommends its separately sold Switch 2 Camera for the optimal experience, but other USB cameras may work and their compatibility is not guaranteed. If you want to check a different camera, use the Test USB Camera feature in Nintendo Switch 2 system settings. Nintendo does not establish a universal compatibility list in the cited guidance.

Set GameChat limits for a child

Nintendo says children under 16 need parental controls set up through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app to use GameChat. For children and supervised users, the app lets a parent manage approved friends and camera permissions. These controls are for supervised accounts; they should not be assumed to apply in the same way to every adult account.

  • Approve friends: A child cannot use GameChat with an unapproved friend. If no friends are approved, the child cannot invite people to a room or accept invitations.
  • Require permission for video: Set video chat to require a parent’s request-by-request approval, or disable it. When a request arrives, the parent can approve or deny it.
  • Adjust or withdraw camera access: During an approved session, a parent can change the allowed camera field of view or withdraw permission.
  • Review session history: The app can show whom the child chatted with and for how long.

For the app’s account and permission guidance, see Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app support and Nintendo’s GameChat FAQ.
