For EVM-based apps, Rabby is a strong candidate if you want transaction checks before signing; for Solana-centered activity, compare Phantom; and if your priority is keeping signing keys offline, consider a hardware wallet such as Trezor Safe 3. Before switching, confirm that a wallet supports your chains and apps, fits your recovery preferences, and works with any hardware device you plan to use.
How to choose a MetaMask alternative
Changing wallets changes the interface and, sometimes, the way you review transactions or recover access. It does not remove the responsibilities of self-custody: you control signing authority and must protect whatever credentials or recovery process the wallet relies on.

- Networks and apps: list the chains, assets, and decentralized apps you actually use. “Multichain” does not mean every network or app is compatible.
- Custody and recovery: check who controls the signing keys and what the documented recovery method requires. A seed phrase, an MPC-based model, and other recovery approaches involve different trade-offs; none should be treated as risk-free.
- Transaction review: previews and warnings can help you spot problems, but they are not guarantees against a loss or a malicious transaction.
- Access and signing workflow: make sure the wallet is available on the device and in the form you want, such as a browser extension or mobile app.
- Hardware compatibility: verify support for the exact wallet integration and device model in current official documentation before buying or moving assets.
- Costs and regional access: a software wallet download may be free while swaps, network transactions, onramps, hardware, or subscriptions can cost money. Check availability and fees for your location.
Best alternatives by use case
Rabby: for EVM-based activity and transaction checks
Rabby is a practical shortlist choice if your activity is on Ethereum-compatible networks and you want transaction checks before signing. MetaMask’s September 2026 comparison describes Rabby as EVM-only, with “70+ integrated chains,” and says it does not natively support Solana, Bitcoin, or TRON. These are vendor-published coverage claims, not an independent compatibility audit; confirm that the particular chain and apps you use are supported. Phantom is a natural alternative to compare if Solana is central to your wallet use. In its September 2026 comparison, MetaMask describes Phantom as Solana-focused, with Bitcoin and selected EVM-network support, and reports eight networks total: Solana plus seven others. That description does not mean Phantom supports every EVM network, so check your required chain and app before switching. The comparison is MetaMask-authored.

Phantom’s hardware integration has specific limits: its support page lists Ledger Nano X, Stax, and Flex for mobile, and Ledger Nano S, Nano S Plus, Stax, and Flex for its extension. It says Trezor models and Tangem are not supported through Phantom’s integration. These restrictions describe Phantom’s integration, not whether those hardware brands work with other wallet software. Rainbow, Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet, and Kraken Wallet: compare against your own requirements
MetaMask’s August 2026 overview includes Rainbow, Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet, and Kraken Wallet among self-custody software alternatives, with broad descriptions of their networks and device support. Those descriptions can help you build a shortlist, but they do not establish a universal winner. For each wallet, verify your essential networks, the exact apps you intend to use, and its current recovery and signing workflow. See MetaMask’s August 2026 wallet overview.

ZenGo: consider its distinct recovery model
The same MetaMask overview describes ZenGo as MPC-based and promotes a seedless recovery approach. That is a different recovery model from a conventional seed phrase, not a promise that access can always be restored or that funds cannot be lost. Read the current recovery documentation closely and decide whether its process suits you before relying on it.
Trezor Safe 3: a hardware option, not a software-wallet substitute
Trezor Safe 3 is a self-custodial hardware wallet listed by MetaMask’s comparison as a long-term hardware-storage option. A hardware wallet can reduce online exposure of signing keys, but it does not prevent every user mistake, phishing attempt, or unsafe transaction. It is a separate option for readers seeking offline key storage, and its compatibility depends on the software and integrations they use. The product’s appearance in a vendor comparison does not establish a current marketplace listing, price, or eligibility for any program.

What security claims and directories do—and do not—tell you
Features such as transaction previews, warnings, and hardware-key storage can improve parts of a workflow; they do not certify that every transaction or wallet use is safe. Phantom describes its hardware integration this way: “Using a hardware wallet keeps your private keys offline while still allowing you to view assets, sign transactions, and interact with apps through Phantom.” That is Phantom’s own product description, not an independent security finding. A practical switching checklist
- Write down your must-have networks and apps. Include every chain and dapp you rely on, not just the one you use most.
- Compare recovery before moving funds. Understand how the candidate wallet handles signing authority, backups, and access recovery. Keep recovery credentials private and never enter them into an unsolicited site or message.
- Check device and integration support. If you use a hardware wallet, confirm the exact model works with the specific wallet app and device type you intend to use.
- Review costs and availability. Check regional access and fees for the actions you expect to take, including swaps, onramps, and network transactions.
- Test your workflow cautiously. Learn how the new wallet displays a transaction and where its security prompts appear before relying on it for important activity. Read each transaction rather than assuming a warning system will catch every problem.
Which crypto wallet is best for beginners?
There is no beginner wallet that is best regardless of use. A newcomer should start with the networks and apps they intend to use, then choose a wallet whose recovery process and transaction-signing prompts they can understand. Rabby may suit a beginner whose activity is EVM-only and who values transaction checks; Phantom may be easier to shortlist for Solana-centered use. If offline key storage is the priority, compare a hardware wallet separately and confirm its compatibility with the apps you need. In every case, practice protecting recovery credentials and reviewing transactions before committing significant funds.

Are these wallets open source?
Open-source status is one factor to check, not a substitute for matching networks, recovery needs, and device support. MetaMask’s August 2026 comparison discusses open-source descriptions across several wallet listings, but those project descriptions should not be treated as an independent verification of every component or version. Consult each wallet’s current official materials if open-source availability is a deciding requirement. MetaMask’s overview of wallets in 2026.
