Nintendo Switch 2 Game Compatibility: What Works, What Needs Updates, and What Doesn’t

Nintendo Switch 2 runs compatible physical and digital Switch games, but some titles need original Joy-Con, updates, or specific accessories—and a few do not work.

Yes—Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible Nintendo Switch games from both physical cards and digital libraries. Compatibility is title-specific, however. A game may run normally, require the original Joy-Con for a mode or accessory, need a free or paid enhancement, show startup or progression problems, or fail to work at all. Nintendo says the Switch 2 hardware differs from the original system, so “compatible” is not a guarantee that every feature works.

The safest check is the individual game’s current Nintendo page or Nintendo eShop listing before you buy or upgrade. For games published by other companies, Nintendo recommends checking with the publisher as well.

How Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility works

Nintendo Switch 2 accepts compatible Nintendo Switch game cards. If you link the Nintendo Account that owns your digital purchases, you can download and play those digital Switch games on the new console. Nintendo describes both formats in its Switch 2 compatibility guidance and transfer instructions.

That broad support has important exceptions. Nintendo’s official wording is: “The Nintendo Switch 2 system’s hardware is different from that of Nintendo Switch, and some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” A game can therefore launch and remain playable while a particular controller feature, accessory, mode, or progression path does not work.

What you own How it works on Switch 2 Important qualification
Physical Nintendo Switch game card Insert the card into Switch 2 and start the compatible software. Individual titles can be unsupported or only partly compatible.
Digital Nintendo Switch game Link the purchasing Nintendo Account, then download the game. The title’s current Nintendo listing determines compatibility and any required update or upgrade.

Compatibility also is not the same as enhancement. Many games simply run as their original Switch versions. Selected titles receive free updates or optional paid upgrades that can improve visuals, frame rate, loading, controls, or multiplayer. Nintendo states that “The contents of these free updates will differ depending on the game.”

What generally works

Most of the practical decision comes down to four separate questions: does the game start, can you progress through it, do its core modes work, and do you have the controllers or accessories those modes require?

  • Launch: Nintendo may classify a title as compatible, unable to start, or able to start with a known issue.
  • Progression: A game can boot but block a story, save, level, or other progression step.
  • Features: A specific mode may depend on infrared sensing, a physical fit, or another feature that changed between generations.
  • Enhancement: A free update, paid upgrade, or no Switch 2-specific change may be listed for the title.

Do not infer a result for one game from another game in the same series. Hardware dependencies differ, and Nintendo’s general compatibility information is a snapshot rather than a permanent promise.

Games that need an original Joy-Con for a feature

Joy-Con 2 controllers cannot perform every function of the original controllers. In particular, Joy-Con 2 lack the original right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera, and they do not fit some older accessories. Nintendo says original Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot physically attach to the console. You must charge them with a Switch console or a compatible Joy-Con charging accessory.

Ring Fit Adventure

Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Ring-Con or fit into the leg strap. An original Switch Joy-Con can be attached for the game’s exercise setup.

1-2-Switch

Modes that use the IR feature require an original right Joy-Con connected wirelessly. Joy-Con 2 do not include the required IR Motion Camera.

Game Builder Garage

IR Motion Camera Nodon and IR-Light Nodon in Free Programming require an original right Joy-Con. Other parts of the software may not depend on that hardware.

Nintendo Switch Sports

Joy-Con 2 do not fit the leg strap, so Soccer Shoot-Out requires an original Joy-Con.

WarioWare: Move It!

Microgames that use the IR camera require an original right Joy-Con.

Everybody 1-2-Switch!

Reduced Joy-Con 2 force-feedback vibration can make hidden-controller play in Joy-Con Hide & Seek more difficult. This is a playability limitation, not a claim that the entire game cannot launch.

Nintendo Labo

Physical Toy-Con designs create several separate constraints:

  • Switch 2 cannot be inserted into the VR Goggles for Toy-Con 04: VR Kit.
  • The console cannot fit some Toy-Con 01 accessories.
  • The Toy-Con 02 Robot accessory cannot attach to Joy-Con 2, although original Joy-Con can be used.

These examples show why “the game works” may still be insufficient when a title depends on a particular kit or controller shape. Check the exact mode and accessory before purchasing hardware.

What does not work, and what has known issues

Software that cannot be used

Nintendo’s compatibility page lists Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit as unusable because the Switch 2 console cannot fit into its Toy-Con VR Goggles. The same page lists the applications Niconico, ABEMA, Hulu, Crunchyroll, and InkyPen as unusable. Those application entries are separate from retail-game compatibility; an app limitation should not be treated as a verdict on a game with a similar name or publisher.

Games that start with problems

Nintendo links separate official lists for Switch games that have startup or progression-blocking issues and for problems resolved or expected to be resolved through updates. A title can therefore be neither “fully working” nor completely unusable: it may launch while a known defect prevents a particular activity or later progress.

Those lists can change as game patches arrive. The compatibility page’s overall status information is labeled current as of June 5, 2025, while Nintendo directs owners to each game page or the eShop for the latest title-level information. Treat an old list or a search result as a lead, not as proof of the game’s current state.

Free updates and paid upgrades are title-specific

A compatible Switch game does not automatically need an update. Some titles run without a Switch 2-specific patch; others receive a free update; still others offer a paid upgrade with additional content or improved performance. Nintendo does not publish one universal upgrade requirement or one standard feature set.

Examples from Nintendo’s free-update listings include:

Game Listed availability date Enhancements identified by Nintendo
Animal Crossing: New Horizons January 15, 2026 Visual optimization
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD January 20, 2026 Visual optimization and local GameShare support
Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet June 5, 2025 Visual and frame-rate improvements
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe September 1, 2026 Visual improvements, faster loading, expanded local multiplayer, and CameraPlay support subject to Nintendo’s stated conditions

Availability dates identify when Nintendo listed each update, not a promise that every game receives similar treatment. Feature details, eligibility, and any price for a paid upgrade must be checked on the current game listing. Nintendo’s complete free-update information is at Nintendo Switch Games with Free Nintendo Switch 2 Updates.

How to check a game before buying or transferring it

  1. Find the exact title. Use the game’s current Nintendo product page or eShop entry, including the correct edition and region.
  2. Read the compatibility status. Look for wording that says the game is compatible, cannot start, or has a known issue affecting startup or progression.
  3. Check controller and accessory requirements. Search the game’s notes for original Joy-Con, IR Motion Camera, leg straps, Ring-Con, Toy-Con, or other physical-fit requirements.
  4. Separate compatibility from enhancement. Confirm whether the page lists a free update, a paid upgrade, or no Switch 2-specific enhancement. A game may be playable without the enhancement.
  5. Confirm ownership format. For digital software, make sure the purchasing Nintendo Account is linked. For a card, confirm that you have the physical game card available.
  6. Check the date and publisher. Nintendo’s broad status snapshot is dated June 5, 2025. For third-party games, read the publisher’s current support notice as well.

This process is more reliable than assuming every Switch game works identically or relying on a compatibility list saved months earlier.

If a game will not start or a feature is missing

  • Install the latest available game and system updates before deciding that the software is permanently incompatible. Nintendo’s issue lists distinguish defects fixed or expected to be fixed by an update.
  • Identify the failing layer: no startup, blocked progression, one mode, controller input, or physical accessory fit. The remedy depends on which layer fails.
  • Pair an original Joy-Con wirelessly when the problem involves IR sensing, a leg strap, Ring-Con, or another function listed above. Remember that the controller will not attach to Switch 2.
  • Recheck the live title page and publisher notice. Compatibility and fixes are updated over time, so a dated general list may not reflect the current build.
  • Do not assume more storage will fix compatibility. Switch 2 uses microSD Express for expanded storage and does not use conventional Switch microSD cards as game-storage expansion. Existing conventional cards can be used to view Switch-captured screenshots and videos, but storage capacity does not repair a software or controller incompatibility.

If the official listing still identifies a title or accessory as unsupported, there is no general console setting that can make it compatible.

The practical buying rule

For an ordinary Switch game with no special hardware dependency, Switch 2 compatibility usually means you can use the physical card or redownload the digital purchase and play. The risk is concentrated in titles that rely on infrared sensing, unusual controller geometry, Toy-Con accessories, or software components that Nintendo has flagged for startup or progression issues.

Check the individual listing immediately before purchase, transfer, or buying an accessory. That single step captures the game’s current compatibility status, update availability, controller requirements, and any publisher-specific warning more accurately than a blanket claim about the Switch library.
