Hate paying for Google Home Premium? Home Assistant Green offers subscription-free local control

Yes—Home Assistant Green is the clearest subscription-free alternative to Google Home Premium for local smart-home control. It can bring compatible lights, switches, sensors and routines into one hub and run automations at home without a monthly fee. It does not reproduce Google’s Gemini Live assistant, Ask Home, Nest camera cloud history or Google’s AI-generated camera summaries, so the choice depends on which Premium features you actually use.

What Google Home Premium charges for

Google announced Google Home Premium on October 1, 2025, as the replacement for Nest Aware. In the United States, the Standard plan costs $10 per month or $100 per year. Advanced costs $20 per month or $200 per year.

Google Home Premium plan Price (US) Documented features
Standard $10/month or $100/year Gemini Live, Ask Home automation help, 30 days of video history and intelligent camera alerts
Advanced $20/month or $200/year Everything in Standard, plus AI event descriptions, Home Brief summaries and searchable video history with Ask Home

Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers may receive Premium benefits through those plans rather than buying Premium separately. Google’s support and Store comparison pages also warn that camera alerts, video history, Gemini for Home, media playback, broadcasts and parental controls vary by plan and device. A feature shown in the plan description is therefore not a guarantee that every Nest or Google Home product supports it.

What Home Assistant Green does without a required subscription

Home Assistant is a self-hosted smart-home platform. Its official FAQ states: “There is no subscription to use it, and no features are locked behind a paywall.” Home Assistant Green is the project’s recommended plug-and-play appliance, designed for people who want a physical hub rather than a do-it-yourself server.

#1 Best Overall
Home Assistant | Smart Home hub with Advanced Automation | Official HomeAssistant ((4G+64G)+Hub)
  • Home Assistant provides a professional and reliable platform for home automation, designed to run continuously 24/7.
  • Powered by a 64-bit Quad-Core Cortex-A53 processor, delivering smooth and efficient performance for smart home automations.
  • Includes 4GB SDRAM for reliable multitasking and 64GB eMMC
  • Features a Mali-450 MP2 GPU for responsive visual interfaces, housed in a compact 85 × 85 × 15mm (3.35" × 3.35" × 0.59") design that fits easily in any space.
  • Typical power consumption is under 10W, with fanless operation for quiet performance suitable for any room in your home.

Local device control

Green can consolidate compatible devices and execute automations on your home network. That means a motion sensor can turn on a light, a schedule can manage heating, or a door sensor can trigger an alarm routine without sending every automation decision to Google’s cloud. Actual compatibility still depends on the device, protocol and integration; check whether your existing products are supported before moving.

Automations and dashboards

You create routines in Home Assistant’s interface and can expose controls through its dashboards and mobile apps. This covers the core “one place to control my home” job that many people expect from a smart-home hub, while allowing more detailed conditions and actions than a single-vendor ecosystem.

Where Green is not a one-for-one Premium replacement

Capability Google Home Premium Home Assistant Green
Core device control and automations Available, with device and plan limits Available locally for supported integrations
Gemini Live and Ask Home Included according to plan and hardware availability Not documented as an equivalent built-in service
Nest cloud video history 30 days on Standard; searchable history on Advanced, subject to device support Not a replacement for Google’s Nest cloud history; camera storage requires a separate design and hardware
AI camera event descriptions and Home Brief Advanced features No documented one-for-one equivalent
Required monthly subscription Yes, unless benefits arrive through an eligible Google AI plan No required subscription for the core platform
Remote access and Google/Alexa voice control Built into Google’s ecosystem Optional Home Assistant Cloud service

The practical dividing line is cloud intelligence versus local control. If your priority is Gemini’s conversational assistance or Google’s searchable Nest recordings, Green does not remove the need for those Google services. If your priority is reliable routines, privacy and avoiding a recurring hub fee, Green addresses that part directly.

Do you need Home Assistant Cloud?

No. Green works locally without Home Assistant Cloud. Nabu Casa’s optional Cloud service adds secure remote access, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa integration, plus speech-to-text and text-to-speech services. Those conveniences are not inherent to the free local installation, so budget for Cloud only if you need them.

Aqara Smart Hub M200, Matter Controller, Featuring Aqara Zigbee, Wi-Fi, IR
  • [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The Aqara Hub M200 is a versatile smart hub that supports multiple advanced features, acting as a Matter Controller, Thread Border Router, and Matter Bridge. It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. With advanced Matter bridging functionality, it syncs Aqara-exclusive features with ecosystems like Home Assistant, Apple HomeKit, Alexa, and Google Home for seamless integration. Supports up to 40 Aqara Zigbee devices and 40 Thread devices.
  • [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
  • [Wired & Wireless Connectivity with PoE Support] Enjoy flexible setup with dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) using advanced WPA3 security, and Power over Ethernet (PoE), making the M200 a versatile PoE Ethernet Smart Home Hub. The USB-C port supports mini-UPS or power bank connections for uninterrupted operation, ensuring your energy-saving and security automations stay online. (*2A USB power adapter is not included. )
  • [Home Automation and Alarm System] Works with all Aqara devices to create a comprehensive, smart home automation system. The Aqara Hub M200 is equipped with a built-in speaker that can be used in a variety of ways: security alerts, doorbell, alarm clock, and custom audio messages. (** 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝-𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐙𝐢𝐠𝐛𝐞𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬)
  • [Local Automation for Reliable Performance] Supports local execution of automations for Zigbee and Matter devices, ensuring smooth operation even without Wi-Fi or cloud access. Enjoy millisecond response times for a more stable and reliable smart home experience. (Some automation, such as cloud push notifications, will still require the cloud connection to be executed.)

Nabu Casa says the service is planned to be renamed Home Assistant Link on December 2, 2026. That announced name change does not alter the distinction between the free local core and the optional hosted services.

How to decide before switching

  1. List the Premium features you use. Separate basic switching and routines from Gemini, camera alerts, video retention, searchable recordings and summaries.
  2. Inventory your devices. Record each camera, light, lock, sensor and speaker, then verify that Home Assistant supports its protocol or integration.
  3. Choose the hub approach. Green is the easiest physical starting point. Home Assistant can also run on a Raspberry Pi, mini PC or virtual machine, but those options require more setup and maintenance.
  4. Plan remote use. If local-only access is acceptable, do not add Cloud. If you need to control your home while away or retain Google/Alexa voice control, evaluate the optional Cloud service and its recurring cost.
  5. Decide what happens to cameras. Moving automations to Green does not automatically recreate Nest’s cloud recording, AI alerts or searchable history. Keep Google’s camera service for those functions or design a separate, compatible recording setup.

Common trade-offs and failure points

  • Unsupported hardware: A device may work in its manufacturer app but lack a Home Assistant integration or expose fewer controls.
  • Internet outages: Local automations can continue during an internet interruption, but cloud-dependent voice assistants and remote access will not.
  • Setup effort: Green is plug-and-play compared with building a server, yet device pairing, networking and automation design still require time.
  • Voice expectations: Local dashboards and automations are not the same as Gemini Live. Treat voice control as an optional integration, not a guaranteed free feature.
  • Camera storage: A hub that controls cameras is not automatically a cloud-video subscription replacement. Confirm recording location, retention and storage capacity separately.

Bottom line for Google Home Premium subscribers

Home Assistant Green is a strong way to eliminate a mandatory Google-style fee for local smart-home control. Its core software has no subscription and no paywalled features, while Green supplies the simplest official hardware path. Keep realistic expectations: it replaces the hub-and-automation role, not Google’s proprietary Gemini and Nest camera services. Add Home Assistant Cloud only when remote access, Google/Alexa integration or hosted speech services justify another recurring charge.
