What to Do if You Entered Your Password on a Typosquatted Site

Assume the password is exposed. Close the suspicious page, open the real service through a bookmark, official app, or carefully typed address, and change the password immediately. Then change every reused copy, review account access, revoke anything unfamiliar, and turn on multifactor authentication—preferably a phishing-resistant FIDO/WebAuthn method when the service supports it.

Do these things first

  1. Close the suspicious tab. Do not enter more information, download a file, or follow a reset link shown by that site. Microsoft’s typosquatting guidance puts it plainly: “Close that browser tab and start again.”
  2. Reach the legitimate service by a trusted route. Use a saved bookmark, the provider’s official mobile or desktop app, or an address you verify character by character. Do not use the original link or a follow-up message from the suspicious site.
  3. Change the password immediately. On the real service, create a long, unique password that you have never used elsewhere. If you cannot sign in, use the provider’s official account-recovery page.
  4. Change every reused version. Search your password manager, browser-saved passwords, and memory for accounts using that password or a similar variation. Start with your email account, financial services, and any account that can reset other accounts.
  5. Check account activity and secure the account. Review recent sign-ins, devices, recovery details, security settings, and active sessions. Remove or sign out unfamiliar access using the service’s own controls.

Changing the password is the remedy for the disclosure; it is not proof that nobody used it before you changed it. Treat the account as potentially accessed until its sign-in history and security settings look normal.

Why a typosquatted site is dangerous

Typosquatting is the registration of a domain that contains a common misspelling of another organization’s domain. A fake address may swap or omit a character, add a word, use extra punctuation, or rely on a visually similar spelling. Criminals often copy the legitimate page so that a login form looks convincing. The page may be designed to steal passwords, collect payment details, or persuade you to download malware.

A convincing design does not make the domain genuine. Check the complete domain name, not just the logo, page layout, or first words in the address bar. A padlock or HTTPS connection encrypts the connection to that domain; it does not certify that the domain belongs to the organization you intended to visit.

Change the exposed password correctly

Use only the real service

Open a fresh browser tab or the official app. Type the provider’s known address yourself or select a bookmark you created before the incident. If you reached the account from a search result, inspect the domain before signing in; advertisements and look-alike results can also lead to the wrong site.

Create a password that is unique

Do not “repair” the old password by adding a number or changing one character. A strong replacement is unique to that service and difficult to guess. A password manager can generate and store unique passwords so that one disclosure does not unlock several accounts.

Change reused passwords in the right order

Reuse turns one phishing event into an account chain. Change the password anywhere it was used, including accounts with a similar variation. Prioritize:

  • Your primary email account: it can usually reset other accounts and receive security notifications.
  • Financial accounts: banks, payment services, brokerages, and shopping accounts that store payment information.
  • Accounts using that email address for sign-in or recovery.
  • Services where the password was saved in a browser or password manager.

Google’s account-security guidance specifically calls out reused-password accounts, services that contact you through the affected email address, accounts where you sign in with that Google address, and places where the password was saved.

If you can no longer sign in

Use the service’s official recovery process, reached from its known homepage or official app. A changed password, altered recovery email, or locked account can indicate that someone acted after the disclosure. Follow the provider’s identity checks and review its recovery notifications for changes you did not make.

Never use a password-reset link sent by the suspicious site, an unexpected text, or a follow-up email that pressures you to act quickly. Attackers commonly use the first stolen password to start a second phishing conversation.

If recovery details were changed or the provider’s automated process fails, contact support through the official help center. Tell support that you entered your password on a fraudulent look-alike site, when it happened, and what account changes you observed. Do not send your password to support.

Check whether someone accessed the account

Review sign-ins and devices

Open the legitimate service’s security or account-activity page. Look for sign-ins around the time you used the fake site and for devices, browsers, operating systems, or applications you do not recognize. Remove unfamiliar devices or choose the provider’s “sign out of all sessions” control when available, then sign in again with the new password.

Session controls differ by provider. Changing a password may not terminate every existing session, so use the service’s explicit session or device-revocation feature. If no such control is visible, contact the provider and ask how to invalidate active sessions.

Interpret location data carefully

An unfamiliar city is a warning, not conclusive proof. Microsoft notes that approximate locations can be inaccurate, particularly on mobile networks. Compare the listed device, operating system, browser, application, and time with your own activity. A familiar device with an odd city may be a location-estimation error; an unknown device and browser deserves containment even when the location looks nearby.

Inspect recovery and security settings

Check recovery email addresses, phone numbers, authenticator registrations, backup codes, forwarding rules, connected applications, and security questions. Remove additions you did not make and regenerate backup codes if the provider allows it. For email accounts, inspect forwarding and mailbox rules because an attacker may silently copy future password-reset messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn on stronger sign-in protection

Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) on the affected account and on other high-value accounts, especially email and financial services. MFA adds another requirement when a password is stolen, making a simple password replay less useful.

The available methods differ by service and device. The FTC says an authenticator app or security key generally offers more protection than one-time codes delivered by SMS or email when those stronger options are available. SMS and email codes are still preferable to password-only access when they are the only choices, but they are more exposed to risks such as phone-number takeover or compromised email.

Method Phishing resistance Compatibility and recovery considerations
FIDO/WebAuthn security key or built-in passkey Strongest option in this comparison. CISA identifies FIDO/WebAuthn as phishing-resistant because the credential is bound to the legitimate site. Requires support from the account and compatible hardware or platform. Enroll a backup method and store recovery codes safely.
Authenticator application Stronger than SMS or email codes, but a user can still be tricked into entering a code on a fake site. Requires access to the enrolled device. Plan recovery before replacing or losing that device.
SMS or email one-time code Provides an extra layer but is not phishing-resistant. Easy to deploy; depends on control of the phone number or email account and should not be the only protection for critical accounts when better options exist.

In CISA’s words, “The only widely available phishing-resistant authentication is FIDO/WebAuthn authentication.” CISA also urges organizations to plan a move to FIDO because its protocol blocks the login when a malicious actor tricks a user into visiting a fake website. MFA does not automatically erase an attacker’s existing session, so review and revoke sessions separately.

Work or school credentials

Notify your organization’s IT or security team promptly. Give them the account name, approximate time, suspicious domain, and whether you entered any code or approved a push notification. They can revoke sessions, reset organizational credentials, check other systems, and investigate sign-in logs. Do not delay notification while trying to determine whether the login succeeded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bank or card information

Contact the relevant bank, card issuer, or payment service using the number on a statement or the official app—not a number supplied by the suspicious page. Explain what information was entered and ask whether the card should be blocked, replaced, or monitored. Watch statements and transaction alerts for unfamiliar activity.

Identity-theft indicators

If you see unauthorized accounts, loans, tax activity, address changes, or other evidence of identity theft, report it through the Federal Trade Commission’s IdentityTheft.gov service and follow its recovery plan. Password exposure alone does not prove identity theft, but it warrants prompt action when other personal or financial information was also submitted.

What not to do after the incident

  • Do not keep using the fake page to “see what happens” or test another password.
  • Do not reuse the replacement password. A unique password limits the damage from a future breach or phishing event.
  • Do not trust urgent follow-up messages. Attackers may impersonate support and ask for a code, remote access, or another login.
  • Do not assume a password change removed every intruder. Check devices, sessions, recovery settings, and connected applications.
  • Do not install cleanup software solely because you entered a password. Password disclosure and device infection are different problems. Investigate downloads or unusual device behavior separately.

Prevent the next typosquatting mistake

Use trusted routes for important accounts

Save bookmarks for email, banking, government, workplace, and other high-value services. Use official apps where appropriate. Avoid signing in from unexpected links in email, text messages, social media, advertisements, or pop-ups.

Read the domain before entering credentials

Look for subtle spelling changes, substituted characters, added or removed letters, extra words, and unexpected punctuation. Read the registrable domain—the organization name immediately before the final domain ending—not merely the beginning of a long address. When in doubt, close the page and navigate from a saved bookmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Let a password manager provide a second check

Password managers normally fill credentials only for the domain saved with the account. If autofill does not appear on a supposed login page, stop and verify the address rather than pasting the password manually. This is a useful warning, not an infallible guarantee: a compromised legitimate site or a look-alike service can still create risk.

Prefer phishing-resistant MFA

For accounts that support passkeys or security keys, enroll them before an emergency. Keep a recovery method and, where practical, a second registered key in a secure place. The key protects future sign-ins; it does not remediate a password already disclosed, so change the password first.

A practical incident checklist

  • Close the suspicious tab and record the fake domain without revisiting it.
  • Open the legitimate service through a bookmark, official app, or verified address.
  • Change the exposed password to a unique one.
  • Change every reused or similar password, beginning with email and financial accounts.
  • Use official recovery if you are locked out.
  • Review sign-ins, devices, sessions, recovery methods, security settings, forwarding rules, and connected apps.
  • Remove unfamiliar access and revoke active sessions where the provider permits it.
  • Enable MFA; choose FIDO/WebAuthn or a security key when supported.
  • Notify workplace IT for work or school credentials.
  • Contact financial institutions if card, bank, or payment information was submitted.
  • Report suspected identity theft through IdentityTheft.gov.
