Can you play Nintendo Switch games on Switch 2?
Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released for Nintendo Switch. Compatibility is broad, not universal: some games are unsupported, and others may have limitations. A compatible game may also receive a free update or a paid upgrade that adds content or improves performance on Switch 2. See Nintendo’s guidance on playing Switch games on Switch 2.

Nintendo’s game compatibility list says its status information was current as of June 5, 2025. Nintendo describes its testing as starting games and conducting limited testing, and says compatibility status may change if problems are found. For a decision in October 2026, check the game’s current Nintendo eShop or product listing rather than treating that dated list as live.

Examples of games and apps Nintendo listed as unavailable
In its compatibility guidance, Nintendo named Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit as unavailable because the Switch 2 console cannot fit inside its Toy-Con VR Goggles. Nintendo also listed the apps Niconico, ABEMA, Hulu, Crunchyroll and InkyPen as unavailable. The page includes separate lists for games with issues that affect play or prevent progress, and for issues resolved or planned to be resolved through updates; consult the current game listing for updated status.

Which Switch games need original Joy-Con?
Original Joy-Con can connect wirelessly to Switch 2, but cannot attach to the console. Some Switch games rely on the original right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera, while some physical accessories do not fit Joy-Con 2. Nintendo identifies these examples in its game compatibility guidance:
- Ring Fit Adventure: Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Ring-Con or fit in the leg strap; use original Joy-Con with those accessories.
- 1-2-Switch: games that use the right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera require an original right Joy-Con.
- Game Builder Garage: using the IR Motion Camera Nodon or IR-Light Nodon requires an original right Joy-Con.
- Nintendo Switch Sports: Joy-Con 2 do not fit the leg strap, and Soccer Shoot-Out requires original Switch Joy-Con. Nintendo says the leg strap can be used with original Joy-Con connected wirelessly.
- WarioWare: Move It!: microgames that use the IR Motion Camera require an original right Joy-Con.
- Everybody 1-2-Switch!: Nintendo says Joy-Con 2’s force feedback vibration is reduced compared with original Joy-Con, which may make its hidden-controller minigame harder.
- Nintendo Labo Toy-Con kits: fit depends on the kit. Some cannot hold the larger Switch 2 console; Nintendo says the Toy-Con 01 and 03 experiences differ from the original, while Toy-Con 02 can be played with original Joy-Con.
These are Nintendo’s named examples, not a guarantee that every unmentioned title has been individually tested without issues. For a third-party-published game, Nintendo advises checking with its publisher for specific compatibility information.

Which old controllers and accessories work?
Compatibility depends on more than whether an accessory can connect: check physical fit, the game feature it supports and how it charges. Nintendo’s general guidance is summarized below; game-specific exceptions still apply.

Will your old Switch microSD card work?
A conventional microSD card from Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 digital games or save data. Its documented use on Switch 2 is viewing screenshots and videos captured on an original Switch. To expand Switch 2 game storage, use a microSD Express card; Nintendo says Switch 2 supports cards up to 2 TB, and that an internet system update is required for first use. Nintendo’s microSD and microSD Express compatibility guidance has the details. A microSD Express card can also be used with original Switch, which reads and writes it at ordinary microSD speeds.
How to identify which generation of gear you have
Original Joy-Con attach to Switch using rails; Joy-Con 2 connect magnetically to Switch 2. The controller generations cannot swap wireless compatibility: original Joy-Con can pair with Switch 2, but Joy-Con 2 cannot pair wirelessly with original Switch. A grip or charging grip works with its matching controller generation.
The consoles and docks carry their respective logos. Nintendo describes the original dock as squared and the Switch 2 dock as having rounder edges. The Switch 2 adapter consists of a separate wall plug and USB-C cable, while the original adapter is one piece. Nintendo says the Switch 2 adapter works with both console generations; the original Switch adapter cannot power the Switch 2 dock. See Nintendo’s console and accessory differences.

What to check before you reuse or buy anything
- For a game: look up its current Nintendo eShop or product listing, especially if a particular mode or feature matters. The compatibility page’s published status date is June 5, 2025.
- For a controller: distinguish wireless pairing from physical attachment, then check whether the game needs the original Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera or an accessory that Joy-Con 2 cannot fit.
- For charging and TV play: do not assume the original dock or HDMI cable will work. The old AC adapter can charge the console directly but cannot power it docked.
- For storage: check that an expansion card is microSD Express. A standard Switch microSD card does not provide Switch 2 game or save-data storage.
