That is a starting point, not a verdict on every TV: panel type, brightness, reflection handling, local dimming, features, and price vary by model.
How QLED and OLED TVs make a picture
OLED controls light pixel by pixel
Each OLED pixel emits its own light and can switch off independently. A bright object can sit next to a black area without a backlight illuminating both, which is why OLED generally delivers deeper blacks and stronger contrast in dark scenes. It also avoids the halos that can appear when an LCD TV’s local-dimming backlight cannot isolate a small bright object precisely. TV OLED panels include WOLED and QD-OLED, which produce color differently. RTINGS’ comparison discusses these distinctions.

QLED adds quantum dots to a backlit LCD
QLED TVs are LED-backlit LCDs that use quantum dots to improve color production. The label does not specify the backlight design or guarantee a particular level of performance. Some QLED TVs use Mini LED backlights and local dimming; others do not. QLED and QD-OLED are different technologies: QD-OLED is an OLED panel type, while QLED refers to a quantum-dot-enhanced LCD approach.

Which is better for your room and budget?
For a dark room and movies: OLED is usually the safer bet
OLED’s pixel-level light control is well suited to dark rooms, films, and scenes with bright highlights against black backgrounds. A strong Mini LED QLED can produce high contrast, but its backlight zones may still create halos around subtitles or bright objects and other zone-related artifacts. If those effects matter to you, compare the specific TV in dark-scene reviews rather than relying on the QLED label.

For a bright room: compare brightness and reflections on the exact model
A bright room does not automatically rule out OLED, nor does QLED guarantee the better picture. Check measured brightness and how well the screen handles reflections for the model and size you plan to buy. Samsung’s UK guide recommends Neo QLED for bright rooms, while RTINGS found QLED models brighter on average than most WOLEDs in its 2025 comparison, particularly in bright scenes. RTINGS also cautions that the category name alone cannot predict which individual TV is brighter. Samsung’s UK guide is specific to that market.
For sports and varied viewing: check uniformity and motion together
Uniformity describes how evenly a TV displays a color or shade across the screen. In its comparison of 41 tested TVs, RTINGS found better uniformity on average for WOLED, but individual panels differ. Fast pixel response can keep motion transitions crisp, yet it can also make stutter in films more noticeable. Consider the content you watch and look for model-specific motion and uniformity assessments.

What do the measurements say about brightness, contrast, and color?
RTINGS’ comparison of the 2025 flagship Samsung QN90F QLED and LG G5 OLED illustrates why broad category assumptions can mislead. These figures describe those named models under the comparison’s test conditions; they are not averages for all QLED or OLED TVs.
| Measurement in RTINGS’ comparison | LG G5 OLED | Samsung QN90F QLED |
|---|---|---|
| Contrast ratio | Effectively infinite | 135,367:1 |
| HDR hallway brightness | 1,120 cd/m² | 1,019 cd/m² |
| BT.2020 color coverage | 70.17% | 61.31% |
| 50% gray uniformity, standard deviation (lower is better) | 1.424% | 1.972% |
These results show that the tested OLED was not automatically dimmer: it measured brighter in this particular HDR test. They also show an OLED contrast advantage and stronger color coverage in this particular comparison. They do not establish a universal winner; results can change with TV model, picture mode, scene, and test method. See RTINGS’ QN90F versus G5 measurements for the comparison and test details.

Which is better for gaming?
Neither technology is the universal gaming winner. Compare the individual TV’s refresh rate, variable refresh rate support, input lag, size, and response time against your console or PC and the games you play. Fast response is one consideration, but the material features and measurements of a specific model matter more than the panel acronym.
If you play for long sessions with the same static HUD or other fixed graphics, factor OLED burn-in risk into your decision. QLED avoids that particular OLED concern, but that alone does not establish that every QLED will last longer or is immune to image retention.

Will OLED burn in?
Permanent burn-in is a real risk when static elements remain on screen for extended periods, particularly at high brightness. That is different from varied everyday viewing, where changing images do not keep the same elements fixed for long stretches. LG says its TVs include safeguards such as a screen saver and screen shift; these reduce risk but do not make every pattern of use risk-free. See LG’s explanation of OLED reliability and burn-in.

RTINGS’ accelerated longevity test reached month 30, with a final update dated March 16, 2026. Its results concern the tested TVs under intensive test conditions, not a guaranteed lifespan in an ordinary home. The test also reported degradation in tested LCD models, so QLED should not be described as immune to all image retention or aging. Details are in RTINGS’ longevity test updates.
How to compare value within your budget
There is no reliable current, cross-market price comparison here. Prices vary with region, screen size, retailer, and sales, so neither technology label guarantees the cheaper TV or better value. Compare TVs of the same size and similar feature tier, then decide whether the price difference is worth what the specific models offer.
- Room fit: Check screen reflections and measured brightness for your lighting conditions.
- Picture priorities: Weigh dark-scene contrast against bright-scene performance and local-dimming artifacts.
- Use pattern: Consider motion, gaming features, and how often static graphics stay on screen.
- Purchase terms: Compare warranty coverage, current local price, and the size you actually want.
The QN90F and G5 measurements above are useful examples, not a like-for-like price recommendation. They are 2025 flagship models, and their results should not be generalized to all TVs.
