Meta describes Muse as a browser-using personal agent that can research across websites and prepare a purchase for your approval. ChatGPT helps you discover and compare products, with in-chat checkout for some eligible merchants and items. Rufus works inside Amazon’s store, using Amazon shopping activity to personalize recommendations and helping with actions such as adding an item to your cart. The practical differences are retailer access, how much the assistant can do, what information it uses, and where you approve and pay.

There is no independent, like-for-like performance or privacy test established for these three products. Their companies’ descriptions can explain intended features and controls, but they do not establish that one assistant is more accurate, secure, private, or effective than the others.

What each assistant lets you do
Meta Muse: delegate browser-based shopping tasks
Meta presents Muse as a general personal agent available through its Muse app and WhatsApp. For shopping, it says Muse can browse retailer websites, compare prices, fill forms, and keep working after you close the app. The planned workflow is more agent-like than a product-search page: Muse does research and prepares actions, then comes back for your approval before sensitive steps such as a purchase. That broader browser ambition is not the same as universal retailer support. A site can block an agent, require an interaction Muse cannot complete, or use a checkout flow that does not support its payment method. The September 21, 2026, Axios report that Amazon blocked Muse from browsing and buying on Amazon.com is a dated report, not a guarantee that the restriction will remain unchanged. Axios report
ChatGPT Shopping: discover, compare, and sometimes check out in chat
OpenAI says ChatGPT can surface product listings with images, details, and links to merchants. It also offers virtual try-on for clothing and accessories and a Library where users can save products. Instant Checkout is a separate, limited path: only some products and merchants are eligible, so seeing a product in ChatGPT does not mean you can buy it there. For apparel, treat virtual try-on as a visual aid rather than a fit guarantee. OpenAI warns that generated try-on images may not accurately represent the actual item or how it fits. Check the merchant’s measurements, product details, and return policy before buying.

Amazon Rufus: shop with an assistant inside Amazon
Amazon describes Rufus as an assistant in its Shopping app and website. It can respond to shopping questions, use conversational context to tailor suggestions, add products to a cart for you to review, and help reorder items you previously bought or browsed. Its close connection to Amazon’s catalog and shopping activity makes it suited to decisions within Amazon’s store; it is not the cross-retailer browser workflow Meta describes for Muse. Amazon said in a 2025 announcement that more than 250 million customers had used Rufus “this year.” That is Amazon’s figure in its 2025 context, not a current 2026 user total. Amazon’s announcement
Can Meta Muse buy things for you?
Meta says Muse can progress a purchase, but it says a person must approve every purchase. For supported checkout, Meta describes Stripe Link and a single-use card number intended to keep the underlying card details from being shown to the merchant or agent. This depends on retailer access and checkout compatibility; it should not be read as a promise that Muse can complete a purchase at every store. Meta’s Muse announcement

Meta’s September 2026 announcement described Shop Pay as a coming-soon payment option. That announcement does not establish that Shop Pay is available through Muse now. Meta also says eligible Link purchases have protections for certain issues, including lost or damaged items and price drops. The exact coverage and eligibility depend on the current terms, so review Stripe Link’s terms before relying on a protection.

ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout offers an in-assistant purchase path for some eligible products and merchants. Other product results link out to merchants, where the customer continues the transaction. Rufus can put a product in an Amazon cart for review; Amazon describes it as helping customers act within Amazon, rather than as a checkout service for other retailers. The available product descriptions do not support a reliable privacy ranking. Each company describes its own practices, and those claims are not a comparable independent audit. The useful questions are what information a service uses, what control you have over it, and what it can do on your behalf.

What Meta says about Muse
Meta says Muse runs in a dedicated cloud virtual machine, with a separate Sentinel layer checking outbound actions. It says users choose which apps to connect and what access levels to grant, can disconnect a service, and can opt out of interactions being used for model training. Meta’s technical explanation says the browser agent sees an accessibility-tree snapshot rather than the page’s raw DOM, cannot run JavaScript in the page context, and pauses while a user takes over the browser. Meta also says purchases require human approval and that an audit trail is available. Those design details describe intended safeguards; they are not proof of how the system performs under every condition.

One qualification matters: Meta describes a Confidential VM intended to cryptographically prevent Meta from accessing the virtual machine as a future capability being tested, not a generally launched feature. What OpenAI and Amazon say
OpenAI says shopping results are independently selected, not ads, and not influenced by partnerships. Its shopping help page also warns about the limits of try-on images and directs customers to verify merchant details. That information addresses result selection and use of the feature; it is not a head-to-head privacy audit of ChatGPT against Muse or Rufus. OpenAI Help Center
Amazon says Rufus uses individual shopping activity and conversational context to personalize answers and product suggestions. If you prefer recommendations less tied to your Amazon shopping history, that use of activity is a relevant distinction to consider. Which assistant fits your shopping habits?
- Consider Muse if you want an agent to research across retailer websites and prepare browser-based tasks, and you are comfortable reviewing and approving a proposed purchase. Its reach still depends on retailer access and compatible checkout.
- Consider ChatGPT Shopping if you want product discovery, comparison, saved items, or visual try-on, with the possibility of in-chat checkout when a product and merchant qualify.
- Consider Rufus if you are shopping on Amazon and want suggestions informed by Amazon shopping activity, or help adding items to a cart and reordering.
For any assistant, inspect the item, seller, final price, delivery details, and return terms yourself before confirming. The more work an agent performs, the more important it is to understand the exact action it is asking you to approve.

The Associated Press reported that Muse launched in September 2026 for adults aged 18 and older in the United States. That describes launch-period availability, not a permanent promise about eligibility or geographic reach. Associated Press launch report
