Many Nintendo Switch games work on Nintendo Switch 2, but compatibility is not universal. Before you buy a specific game for the newer console, look it up in Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility search and read any title-specific notes: a game may not start, may have limited functionality, or may need original Joy-Con or another accessory.
Check the exact game before you buy
Compatibility depends on the individual title, not simply on whether it was released for Nintendo Switch. Nintendo advises buyers to check a game in its compatibility lookup before purchasing it for Switch 2. The page is updated as testing continues, so check again close to purchase if you looked it up earlier.

- Open Nintendo’s compatibility page and search the exact game title.
- Read the full result and any handling notes. A title’s ability to start does not necessarily mean every feature or control method works as it did on the original Switch.
- If a third-party game’s status or a feature you need is unclear, ask its publisher. Nintendo recommends contacting the publisher for title-specific information about third-party games.
Nintendo does not provide a library-wide compatibility percentage on the cited support pages. Its guidance is title-specific, and support status may change as testing and updates continue.
Know which version you are buying
A listing may be for the original Switch release, a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, or an upgrade pack for an existing Switch game. Check the product description rather than assuming that “Switch 2” means a separate game or that every version includes the same additions.

| Purchase | What it is | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo Switch game | A Switch release that can be played on Switch 2 if the specific title is compatible. | Look up the title, then check whether its controls or accessories have limitations. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | A Switch release with added elements for Switch 2, which may include improved graphics or gameplay features unique to the newer console. | Compare the additions with the original game and confirm what the edition contains. |
| Upgrade pack | Additional content for a qualifying original-game owner to access that game’s Switch 2 Edition content. | Confirm that you own the qualifying original game and compare the pack’s included content. Nintendo says the retail Switch 2 Edition and the upgrade-pack version contain the same content for that game. |
Upgrade content varies by game. Check the exact title’s listing and whether you already own the original before paying; otherwise, you could buy content or a version you do not need.
Check controllers and accessories—not just the compatibility result
Some Switch games rely on a controller fitting into an accessory or using a particular feature. Switch 2’s included Joy-Con 2 controllers do not fit every original Switch accessory, and the right Joy-Con 2 does not have the original right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera. A limitation may affect one mode or feature rather than making the whole game unplayable.

- Blast off on a high-octane adventure to save a star system from invasion
- Tear through space, soar across planets, and shoot loads of foes out of the sky at every step of the way

- Enter first-person mode to experience the action from inside the cockpit, and even use mouse controls to fly
- Invite a second player* to join you as a gunner using Nintendo Switch 2 mouse controls
- Ring Fit Adventure: Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Ring-Con, so original Joy-Con are needed for Ring-Con use.
- 1-2-Switch and other IR-dependent modes: Joy-Con 2 lacks the original right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera, which some modes require.
- Nintendo Switch Sports: Joy-Con 2 does not fit the Leg Strap used for Football Shoot-Out.
- Nintendo Labo: Some kits have physical fit limitations with Joy-Con 2.
- Other motion-control games: Check whether the specific activity requires an original controller, leg strap, Ring-Con, Toy-Con, or another accessory.
Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2 for supported uses, but they cannot attach to the Switch 2 console. You will need a Nintendo Switch console or a compatible charging grip or stand to charge them. Nintendo names Game Builder Garage, Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training, and WarioWare: Move It! among titles with Joy-Con 2 or accessory-related limitations; check the individual compatibility notes to see which feature is affected.

Understand game cards and downloads
Switch 2 accepts game cards for compatible Switch software, as well as Switch 2 game cards. Nintendo identifies three relevant card categories for the newer console: Switch 2 exclusive cards (including game-key cards), Switch 2 Edition cards, and cards for compatible Switch software.

A game-key card is not a complete copy of the game: it is used to download the game over the internet, and must then be inserted to launch it. Check the listing and make sure you can download the game before choosing that format. The reverse direction is different: Switch 2 exclusive game cards do not work in an older Switch console.

Nintendo’s system-transfer guidance says digital games purchased on Switch can be transferred and redownloaded to Switch 2. Certain save data is transferred too, but save handling can have game-specific rules; do not assume every game’s progress moves in the same way.

Nintendo’s virtual game cards treat eShop games and DLC as cards that can be moved between up to two linked Switch or Switch 2 consoles. When a virtual game card is loaded on a console, that console’s users can play the content offline.
An old Switch microSD card is not a way to move installed games or save data for use on Switch 2. For that use, Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card. A regular microSD card can still display captured screenshots and videos made on Switch. Nintendo says first use of a microSD Express card requires an internet system update and supports cards up to 2 TB.
Quick Recap
A quick pre-purchase checklist
- Search the exact title in Nintendo’s live compatibility lookup and read the full result.
- Identify whether the listing is the original Switch game, a Switch 2 Edition, or an upgrade pack.
- Compare included features and check whether you already own the original game.
- Look for motion-control, infrared-camera, leg-strap, Ring-Con, Toy-Con, or other accessory requirements; confirm whether original Joy-Con are needed.
- For an uncertain third-party title, ask the publisher about the specific game and feature.
- For a digital purchase, confirm the Nintendo Account and transfer plan; treat save transfer as potentially game-specific.
- If moving installed games or saves by memory card, use microSD Express rather than an old Switch microSD card.
- If buying a game-key card, make sure you can download its game and keep the card available to launch it.
