How to Choose a Robot for High-Temperature Industrial Work

Choose a robot for hot industrial work by measuring exposure across the full cell, then validate the exact variant, protection package, load, motion and safety design.

Choose a robot for high-temperature work by matching the exact robot variant, tooling and complete cell to measured heat exposure at every component—not by relying on a single temperature rating. Separate sustained ambient heat from brief wrist exposure, radiant heat, splash and direct contact; then validate protection, load, reach, cycle time and safety with the manufacturer and a qualified integrator.

What does “high-temperature work” mean for a robot?

It is not one operating condition. The robot base may sit in a hot room while its wrist briefly enters a hotter zone; radiant heat may affect one arm link, while cables, the controller and end effector face different exposures. A published ambient limit and a short-duration local exposure limit describe different conditions and cannot be compared as if they were interchangeable.

Start by defining the task: for example, ladling, furnace or die extraction, hot-part transfer, forging-press tending, mold handling, or post-casting grinding. Map the robot’s full motion and workpiece path, and record the exposure expected at the base, each arm region, wrist, cables, controller and tooling. Distinguish sustained ambient temperature from radiant heating, brief hot-zone entry, splash and direct contact. Note how long each peak lasts and how frequently it recurs.

Use the resulting exposure profile to ask for written confirmation for the exact model and options under consideration. A family-level claim is a shortlist aid, not proof that a particular configuration is suitable for a particular cell.

What do published temperature and payload figures establish?

The figures below are manufacturer statements with different scopes and conditions. They are useful for framing questions, not for selecting a model without its current technical documentation.

Manufacturer and document Published figure What it applies to—and what it does not establish
KUKA, KR QUANTEC Foundry product announcement (2020) Up to 55 °C ambient; up to 180 °C at the wrist for ten seconds per minute. These are stated for KR QUANTEC Foundry variants and the specified exposure conditions. They are not general limits for KUKA robots or industrial robots as a whole.
KUKA, current foundry-robot portfolio page (undated; accessed 2026) Stated payload range of 3 to 1,300 kg across the foundry portfolio. This is a portfolio range, not the payload of an individual robot or a guarantee at every reach, mounting orientation or motion.
Kawasaki Robotics, current foundry page (undated; accessed 2026) Portfolio payload claim of up to 1,500 kg. This is a portfolio-level maximum. It does not identify a suitable model or establish its capacity for a particular tool, reach or cycle.
ABB, IRB 1200 product specification, revision K (2025) Operating ambient of +5 °C to +45 °C for the cited variants; +35 °C maximum for specified food-grade lubrication or hygienic variants. These limits apply to the cited IRB 1200 configurations; they are not a foundry rating.

Never use a short, local wrist exposure figure as a substitute for a continuous ambient limit, or vice versa. Confirm the units, test conditions, model and option codes, regional configuration, exclusions and document revision with the manufacturer. A specific plant’s conditions and task data are needed to determine whether any stated limit applies.

How should you compare protection packages?

Heat is only one environmental hazard. Foundry and forging cells may also expose equipment to dust, sand, water, steam, oil, chemicals, metal particles or splash. Build a hazard list for each robot region and check how the proposed variant addresses each exposure.

  • Coatings and seals: Ask which surfaces and joints are protected, and whether the specified coating and seals suit the process chemicals, particles and temperature profile.
  • Cables, connectors and electronics: Confirm which components are protected and whether the proposed routing and installation preserve that protection.
  • Wrist and ingress protection: Check the rating and any sealing-air requirements for the exact configuration. An ingress-protection figure addresses defined ingress hazards; it does not by itself establish heat tolerance.
  • Maintenance: Ask what inspection and service conditions apply to seals, coatings, cables and any cooling or sealing-air system.

KUKA describes foundry features including heat-, corrosion-, alkali- and acid-resistant protection, special seals and an IP67 Foundry wrist. ABB’s IRB 1200 product specification identifies Foundry Plus protection as an IP67 option. Those manufacturer descriptions do not make IP rating a temperature rating, nor do they establish that any one package covers every hazard in a proposed cell.

How do you size the robot for the task?

Size the manipulator for the complete moving load and required motion—not the workpiece alone. Include the end effector, cabling and attachments, the heaviest part, and applicable process forces. Validate center of gravity and inertia as well as nominal payload; confirm the load data for the required reach, mounting position and motion with the manufacturer.

Check that the candidate can reach the pickup and placement points without entering an unacceptable heat zone or colliding with the furnace, press, tooling, guards or nearby equipment. Confirm required cycle time, repeatability at operating conditions, clearances and maintenance access. A robot that can lift the part in isolation may still be unsuitable once the tool, approach path and process motion are included.

Kawasaki identifies foundry tasks including mold handling, casting extraction, core setting, ladling, deburring, grinding and polishing. These tasks span different tool loads, reach and exposure patterns; the portfolio maximum payload cannot determine suitability for any one of them. Likewise, KUKA’s stated portfolio range does not replace the exact model’s load and motion data.

What heat mitigation belongs in the cell design?

Foundry guidance from the Robotic Industries Association describes approaches such as ducting cool air, using a protective shroud, locating the controller away from heat, and fitting stainless-steel shields near end-of-arm tooling to reflect heat. These are system-design options, not universal upgrades or proof that a robot’s approved operating rating has changed.

Before adding a shield, cover or cooling arrangement, ask the manufacturer and integrator to assess its compatibility with the robot and process. Check articulation, collision risks, cable movement, airflow, maintenance access and surrounding equipment. Establish which components remain exposed and whether measurement or thermal modelling is needed to validate the design. Confirm how any added protection affects inspection and service requirements.

How do you validate safety for a hot-work cell?

Assess the robot as part of the complete application: end effector, furnace or press, hot workpiece, guarding, operator access, maintenance tasks and foreseeable failures. Product conformity for the robot alone does not complete the safety assessment for an integrated cell.

ISO’s 2025 standards distinguish requirements for industrial robots as machines (ISO 10218-1:2025) from requirements for integration of applications and cells (ISO 10218-2:2025). The Part 2 scope page lists exclusions relevant to hot work, including severe conditions beyond manufacturer specifications and dangerous loads such as molten metals. Establish the standards and local legal requirements that apply to the specific installation with a qualified integrator; do not assume the cited standards alone settle every process hazard.

What should a shortlist and written proposal include?

Give each robot supplier and integrator the same application data, then compare written responses against the same criteria. Ask them to identify the exact robot variant and options rather than relying on a product-family label.

  • Continuous ambient limit for the exact robot and controller configuration.
  • Local or wrist exposure limits, including permitted peak duration, frequency and duty cycle.
  • Defined conditions and exclusions for radiant heat, direct contact, splash and temperature transients.
  • Protection by robot region against dust, liquids, chemicals and particles, including required seals, coatings, protected wiring and sealing air.
  • Payload, tool inertia, reach and mounting orientation validated for the complete moving load.
  • Cycle time, repeatability, clearance and other performance requirements at the operating condition.
  • Required cooling, shields, shrouds, controller location, inspection intervals and maintenance conditions.
  • Cell guarding, access, safety validation, maintenance strategy, spares and lifecycle responsibilities.

Request written, condition-specific confirmation of the permitted exposures and required options. Make clear which party validates the robot selection, accessories, installation and complete cell. If a proposal leaves an exposure or responsibility undefined, resolve it before treating the robot as suitable.
