That release order follows the main trilogy’s sequence before moving to the optional, story-focused spin-off. If you mean the broad story timeline instead, Origins comes first: it follows Cereza as a young witch, before the main games.
What order should you play the Bayonetta games?
- Bayonetta
- Bayonetta 2
- Bayonetta 3
- Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon
This is the clearest route for newcomers who want to experience the main games’ reveals in release sequence, then try the spin-off. PlatinumGames lists all four as Bayonetta series entries and describes Bayonetta 2 as a true sequel to the first game (PlatinumGames’ Bayonetta series catalogue).

Where does Bayonetta Origins fit in the story timeline?
Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon is set broadly before the main games: it follows Cereza as a young witch, prior to her becoming the Bayonetta of the numbered entries. PlatinumGames calls it “the first page of Cereza’s story” and describes her adventure with the first demon she summoned (PlatinumGames on Bayonetta Origins).

So, if you are arranging the games by broad chronological placement, put Origins before the trilogy, then play Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2, and Bayonetta 3. That is a broad guide, not a promise that every event across the series fits into one simple, fully settled chronology. The official material cited here does not resolve every continuity detail, particularly the multiverse elements in Bayonetta 3. Nintendo’s Bayonetta 3 history page recaps events from Bayonetta 2, which supports playing the numbered games in sequence.

What role does each game play?
| Game | Role | Useful context |
|---|---|---|
| Bayonetta | First mainline game and recommended starting point | Originally released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with later PC and Wii U releases listed by PlatinumGames (PlatinumGames’ game page). |
| Bayonetta 2 | Mainline sequel | PlatinumGames calls it a true sequel; Nintendo lists a Switch edition (PlatinumGames’ game page; Nintendo’s Bayonetta 2 listing). |
| Bayonetta 3 | Third numbered entry | Part of the official Bayonetta series catalogue (PlatinumGames’ Bayonetta series catalogue). |
| Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon | Story-focused spin-off and Cereza’s childhood story | Released for Nintendo Switch on March 17, 2023; Nintendo is the publisher and PlatinumGames the developer (PlatinumGames’ Origins page). |
Is Bayonetta Origins part of the main series, and do you need to play it?
Origins is a spin-off, not another numbered action sequel. Its style and gameplay differ from the main games. Director Abebe Tinari described the project as “a different side of Bayonetta,” while supervising director Hideki Kamiya said it offers a new gameplay experience for established fans and people unfamiliar with the series (PlatinumGames interview with Abebe Tinari; PlatinumGames interview with Hideki Kamiya).
You do not need to play Origins to follow the numbered trilogy. It can be an approachable starting point for players drawn to its distinct style, but playing it first means encountering a prequel before the main games’ release-order reveals.

- Top Developer Pedigree- Built from the ground up by Platinum Games, a newly formed studio from gaming's most celebrated development teams (DMC & Resident Evil series).
- Unique, Sexy Female Lead Character- Bayonetta is a graceful, stylish & all action heroine with a distinctive character design playing an integral part of her special attacks.
- Angelic enemies- Fight against uniquely crafted angelic enemies casting a new light on good and evil.
- Groundbreaking Acrobatic Gameplay- Bayonetta wields an impressive arsenal of weapons on her hands and feet through an intuitive and fluid combat system unrivalled in gaming.
- Interchangeable weapons- In addition to her four enchanted guns called Scarborough Fair, she can unlock an array of weapons from shotguns, bazookas and fiery claws.
Do you need to play Bayonetta 1 and 2 before 3?
For the best continuity, play Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 before Bayonetta 3. The second game is a direct sequel, and Nintendo’s official Bayonetta 3 history page recaps events from Bayonetta 2. The recap is useful context, but it does not make release order irrelevant if you want the earlier games’ stories and reveals firsthand.

What should you check before choosing an edition?
The games have appeared across different platforms and editions. PlatinumGames’ catalogue lists Switch versions for the first two games and Switch releases for Bayonetta 3 and Origins; Nintendo’s Bayonetta 2 listing confirms its Switch edition and eShop option.
