Nintendo’s Japanese ordinary share trades as ticker 7974 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime Market. Its standard trading unit is 100 shares. In the United States, NTDOY is an over-the-counter (OTC) American depositary receipt (ADR), not a second ordinary-share ticker. Citibank’s current depositary directory states that one Nintendo ordinary share represents four NTDOY depositary receipts.
For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, Nintendo paid 42 yen per ordinary share as an interim dividend and 177 yen as a year-end dividend, for 219 yen in total. Nintendo’s current dividend table forecasts 162 yen per ordinary share for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027, although the interim and year-end split is listed as not yet determined. Your ability to buy either instrument, the currency you use, dealing costs, taxes and account eligibility depend on your country and broker.

What ticker 7974 represents
The Japanese ordinary share
Ticker 7974 identifies Nintendo Co., Ltd.’s ordinary shares in Japan. Nintendo says it has been listed on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange since the TSE market restructuring on April 4, 2022. The Prime Market is the venue for the company’s primary Japanese listing; it is not an OTC quotation.
Japanese shares use a unit-share system. Nintendo states that 100 shares constitute one unit and that, in principle, its stock trades by 100 shares. A purchase of one standard unit therefore represents 100 ordinary shares, before any broker-specific fractional-share service or different order facility. A broker may display a live quote for one share while still requiring an order in a 100-share multiple, so check the order ticket rather than relying on the headline price.

What a 100-share unit means for your budget
The cash needed for one ordinary-share unit is the current Japanese share price multiplied by 100, plus brokerage commission, exchange-related charges and any currency-conversion spread. The available data does not establish a current market price, so no yen or home-currency purchase total can be stated here. Prices move continuously during trading and may differ between the Japanese close and an overseas broker’s display.
Buying 7974 gives you the Japanese ordinary share. It also exposes you directly to the yen and to the operating, regulatory and market conditions affecting a Japan-listed security. Whether your broker can hold Japanese shares in custody, vote them, process corporate actions or support Japanese tax forms varies by country.
What NTDOY represents
ADR structure and the 1:4 ratio
NTDOY is an American depositary receipt quoted over the counter. It is issued through a depositary arrangement rather than being Nintendo’s separate class of ordinary share. Citibank Depositary Receipt Services lists Nintendo’s ordinary ticker as 7974 JP and states a ratio of one ordinary share to four depositary receipts. The ratio changed from one ordinary share to eight receipts effective October 3, 2022.

Because four receipts represent one ordinary share, an NTDOY holder has economic exposure to one-quarter of an ordinary share for each receipt, before fees, taxes and currency conversion. The ratio does not make the two tickers interchangeable: they trade in different venues, in different currencies and under different settlement and market-access rules.

Nintendo’s latest dividend amounts
Fiscal year ended March 31, 2026
Nintendo’s published dividend table reports an interim dividend of 42 yen per ordinary share and a year-end dividend of 177 yen per ordinary share for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. Together, those payments equal 219 yen per ordinary share for the year.
The record date for the interim dividend was September 30, 2025. The record date for the year-end dividend was March 31, 2026. Nintendo lists June 29, 2026 as the effective date for the year-end payment. A record date is the company’s eligibility date; your broker may impose an earlier trading or settlement deadline, and an ADR holder may receive cash later because the depositary and broker must process it.

Fiscal year ending March 31, 2027
Nintendo’s current dividend table forecasts 162 yen per ordinary share for the full fiscal year ending March 31, 2027. The same table leaves the interim and year-end amounts as not yet determined. Treat 162 yen as a company-published forecast, not a guaranteed payment: the final amount can change with results, board decisions and the terms of Nintendo’s dividend policy.

The 219-yen figure is stated per Japanese ordinary share. At the current 1:4 ratio, four NTDOY receipts correspond to one ordinary share, so the underlying gross amount associated with four receipts would be 876 yen before currency conversion, depositary charges and taxes. One receipt would correspond mathematically to 219 yen divided by four, or 54.75 yen, before those deductions. The actual U.S.-dollar cash credited to an account depends on the yen-dollar conversion rate and the dates and fees used by the depositary and broker.
Applying the same arithmetic to the 162-yen fiscal-2027 forecast gives 648 yen associated with four receipts, or 162 yen per receipt, before any deductions. That is an exposure calculation, not a promise that NTDOY will pay those exact amounts in dollars.

How Nintendo’s dividend policy works
Profit is part of the decision
Nintendo states that its basic policy for direct profit returns is to pay dividends after considering its profit level for the fiscal year. A dividend is therefore a board-approved distribution, not a fixed coupon. Earnings, cash generation, investment needs, balance-sheet priorities and the company’s stated policy can all affect the final amount.
The policy change dated from fiscal 2026
Nintendo’s November 2025 policy notice describes a change to an annual-dividend framework using a test based on 40% of consolidated operating profit or a 60% consolidated payout-ratio basis. The notice says the new policy applies from the year-end dividend for the fiscal year ending March 2026. Read the dated notice and the latest financial materials together when interpreting the formula: Nintendo’s dividend webpage also displays older wording referring to 33% and 50% figures alongside newer amounts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThose dates matter. A percentage shown on a webpage is not automatically the rule that determined an earlier payment, and an announced framework does not eliminate the need for a board decision. For a specific year, use the dividend table and the policy notice applicable to that fiscal period.

How to buy Nintendo shares or ADRs
- Choose the instrument. Select 7974 if you specifically want the Tokyo-listed ordinary share and can use a Japanese-market account. Select NTDOY only if an OTC ADR is available to you and its structure, liquidity and costs suit your needs.
- Confirm jurisdiction and account eligibility. Ask the broker whether residents of your country may trade Japanese equities, OTC securities or both. Some account types prohibit OTC trading or require additional risk acknowledgments.
- Check the exact security in the order ticket. Verify the ticker, security description, market, currency and ADR ratio. Do not assume that a search result for “Nintendo” is 7974; confirm whether the order is for the Tokyo ordinary share or NTDOY.
- Review trading hours and order types. Tokyo trading follows Japan’s market schedule and time zone. OTC trading hours, quotation quality and order handling can differ. A limit order can control the maximum price you pay, while a market order may execute at an unexpectedly wide spread, especially in a less liquid OTC session.
- Calculate the all-in amount. For 7974, include the 100-share unit, yen funding and foreign-exchange costs. For NTDOY, include the quoted price, commission, spread and any ADR or custody charge. Your broker’s fee schedule is the authoritative source for its charges.
- Check settlement and custody. Confirm the expected settlement date, how dividends and corporate actions are credited, and whether the broker supports voting or conversion instructions for the chosen instrument.
- Review tax documentation. Before trading, ask which forms apply to your residence, whether Japanese or U.S. withholding can occur, and how foreign tax credits are handled in your tax return. A broker cannot determine your personal tax result.
- Place and monitor the order. After execution, retain the trade confirmation showing ticker, venue, quantity, price and currency. Monitor dividend announcements and account notices rather than assuming the ordinary-share calendar will match an ADR credit date.
How to compare brokers that offer Nintendo exposure
No single broker is suitable in every country. Compare the service against the instrument you actually intend to hold.
| Check | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Market access | Does the account provide direct TSE Prime access, OTC ADR access, or both? Is 7974 available as an ordinary share rather than a contract or derivative? |
| Order minimums | Must Japanese orders be placed in 100-share multiples? Are fractional ordinary shares supported, and if so, are they held through a pooled arrangement? |
| Pricing | What are commissions, minimum ticket charges, exchange fees, custody charges and the foreign-exchange spread? Are OTC quotes delayed? |
| Liquidity and execution | How does the broker handle wide spreads, partial fills, limit orders and trading halts? Can you see the relevant bid and ask before submitting? |
| Dividends | How quickly are Japanese dividends or ADR distributions credited? Are depositary fees itemized, and in what currency is cash paid? |
| Corporate actions | Can you receive notices, vote, participate in rights or tender events, and submit instructions before the broker’s deadline? |
| Tax support | Which withholding statements and annual reports are supplied for your jurisdiction? Does the broker identify the security as a Japanese ordinary share or an ADR? |
| Protection and custody | Which legal entity holds the asset, what investor-protection regime applies, and what happens if the broker exits a market or stops supporting OTC securities? |
Costs, currency and tax issues to understand
Currency exposure
7974 is priced in yen. If your home currency strengthens against the yen, the translated value of the shares and dividends can fall even when Nintendo’s yen price is unchanged. NTDOY may be quoted in U.S. dollars, but that does not remove the underlying yen exposure; it adds a depositary conversion layer.
ADR and custody charges
An ADR distribution can be reduced by depositary fees, currency-conversion costs, withholding and the broker’s own processing charge. These deductions are separate from Nintendo’s declared per-ordinary-share dividend. Ask for the fee schedule and a sample dividend statement before relying on a projected cash amount.

Tax treatment depends on residence, account type and local rules. Japanese-source dividends, U.S.-market ADR processing and foreign-tax-credit rules can interact. The figures in this article are gross company-declared amounts unless a deduction is expressly identified; they are not a personal after-tax yield calculation. Consult the tax authority or a qualified adviser for your circumstances.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing 7974 with NTDOY: They are different instruments on different venues. Confirm the market and security description before sending an order.
- Ignoring the 100-share unit: A displayed per-share quote can understate the cash required for a standard Japanese order.
- Dividing the dividend incorrectly: The 219-yen amount is per ordinary share. Four NTDOY receipts represent one ordinary share, so the receipt-level arithmetic is one-quarter before deductions.
- Treating a forecast as a commitment: The 162-yen figure for the year ending March 31, 2027 is a forecast, and the interim/year-end split is not yet stated.
- Using the wrong record-date assumption: Record dates and broker settlement deadlines are not the same. Confirm the broker’s cutoff for each instrument.
- Comparing headline yields across currencies: A yen dividend, a dollar ADR credit and a home-currency return include different exchange rates and charges.
- Relying on old policy percentages: Nintendo’s November 2025 notice changed the framework from the fiscal-2026 year-end dividend onward, while older wording remains visible on some web material.
- Assuming OTC liquidity equals Tokyo liquidity: OTC spreads, quote depth and execution quality may differ materially from the primary Japanese listing.
What to verify before placing an order
- The exact ticker: 7974 for the Tokyo ordinary share or NTDOY for the OTC ADR.
- The venue, currency, trading hours and settlement cycle shown by your broker.
- Whether 100-share multiples are required for 7974.
- The current ADR ratio; Citibank’s current directory states 1 ordinary share to 4 receipts, replacing the former 1:8 ratio effective October 3, 2022.
- Commission, foreign-exchange, custody and depositary charges.
- Dividend record dates, broker ex-dividend or settlement deadlines and expected payment timing.
- Withholding-tax documents and the treatment of foreign dividends in your country.
- Whether your account can hold the security and process corporate actions.
The Bottom Line
Nintendo’s primary Japanese stock is 7974 on the TSE Prime Market, normally traded in 100-share units. NTDOY is a separate OTC ADR in a 1:4 ordinary-share-to-receipt ratio. Nintendo paid 219 yen per ordinary share for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026 and currently forecasts 162 yen for the year ending March 31, 2027. Choose between them only after checking your broker’s market access, currency conversion, fees, tax treatment and dividend-processing rules.
