Nintendo’s official maximum is 32 GB: original 3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS models use SD or SDHC cards, while New 3DS-family models use microSD or microSDHC. Larger SDXC cards may work if manually formatted as FAT32, but that is an unofficial workaround—not a Nintendo-supported maximum or a guarantee of compatibility.
Official SD card limits by 3DS model
| Console models | Card type and official capacity | Fit |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 2DS | SD up to 2 GB; SDHC from 4 GB to 32 GB | Full-size SD card. A microSD card can be used with a full-size SD adapter. |
| New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 2DS XL | microSD up to 2 GB; microSDHC from 4 GB to 32 GB | microSD card fits directly. |
Nintendo says SDXC and microSDXC cards “are not considered compatible,” and its regional support information lists 32 GB as the largest usable card size for the 3DS family. See Nintendo Support’s card compatibility guide and Nintendo’s 3DS support page.

For the documented, lowest-uncertainty option, choose a 32 GB SDHC card for an original 3DS, 3DS XL or 2DS, or a 32 GB microSDHC card for a New model. Nintendo notes that it cannot guarantee products other than the card supplied with the system, so its listed card types are compatibility guidance rather than a guarantee for every third-party card.

Can a 3DS use a 64 GB or 128 GB card?
It may be possible, but it is outside Nintendo’s listed compatibility. Larger SDXC and microSDXC cards are ordinarily formatted with a file system the 3DS does not use; a specialist 3DS guide describes manually formatting cards over 32 GB as FAT32. That guide recommends a capacity range of 2 GB through 128 GB, with FAT32 and MBR; for 128 GB cards, it recommends a 65,536-byte allocation unit. These are specialist setup recommendations, not Nintendo specifications or a guarantee that a particular card will work. 3DS Hacks Guide: Key Information.

In practical terms, 64 GB or 128 GB can be considered if you need more room and accept the extra setup and uncertainty. A 128 GB card is the upper end of that guide’s recommended range—not a proven hardware maximum. The guide says cards of 200 GB or more may work but are not recommended because of possible DS/GBA graphics and custom-theme issues.
Which card should you choose?
- Choose 32 GB or less if you want to follow Nintendo’s published compatibility guidance and avoid a manual reformat.
- Choose 64 GB or 128 GB only if you are comfortable with an unofficial FAT32 setup and the possibility that the card may not work as expected.
- Match the card shape to the system: original 3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS take full-size SD; New 3DS, New 3DS XL and New 2DS XL take microSD. An adapter lets an original-model system use microSD.
No reliable measured comparison establishes that one of these capacities makes a 3DS boot faster or that larger cards always slow it down. The meaningful differences here are official support, physical fit and the formatting effort and uncertainty involved.
