Starship vs. New Glenn: How SpaceX and Blue Origin’s Rockets Compare

SpaceX’s Starship and Blue Origin’s New Glenn are both very large orbital rockets, but they are built around different goals. Starship combines a spacecraft and booster designed for full reuse and missions beyond Earth orbit; New Glenn is an orbital launcher whose stated recovery plan focuses on reusing its first stage. Their advertised payload figures are not directly comparable without matching the destination orbit and reuse configuration.

What each rocket includes

For a fair comparison, “Starship” means SpaceX’s complete two-stage system: the Starship upper stage, which is also a spacecraft, and the Super Heavy booster. New Glenn is Blue Origin’s two-stage orbital launch vehicle. The name Starship is sometimes used for the upper stage alone, so check which meaning is intended when comparing dimensions or capabilities.

Size and payload capacity

SpaceX lists Starship at 124 metres (407 feet) tall and 9 metres in diameter. Blue Origin describes New Glenn as more than 98 metres (320 feet) tall, with a seven-metre fairing. Those are company-published specifications; the fairing dimension describes the space available for payloads, not the rocket’s diameter.

Vehicle and configuration Published payload capability What the figure means
Starship, fully reusable configuration 100+ metric tonnes SpaceX’s current capability page states this figure but does not provide a directly matched orbit comparison with New Glenn’s figures.
New Glenn 45 metric tonnes to low Earth orbit (LEO) Blue Origin’s stated LEO capability.
New Glenn More than 13 metric tonnes to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) Blue Origin’s stated GTO capability; GTO is a different, higher-energy destination than LEO.

The numbers do not establish a simple payload winner. Starship’s 100+ metric tonnes is stated for a fully reusable configuration, while New Glenn’s figures name two specific destinations. A meaningful numerical comparison would need the same orbit, payload assumptions, and reuse configuration for both vehicles. These are company-stated capabilities, not independently verified results from an identical mission.

Reuse: both stages or the booster?

Starship and Super Heavy

SpaceX describes both Starship stages as designed for full reuse. Super Heavy is intended to return to the launch site for a catch, while Starship is designed to return for reuse. SpaceX also presents orbital propellant transfer as part of the architecture for long-range missions, allowing the system to support destinations beyond Earth orbit.

New Glenn

Blue Origin’s published recovery design centers on New Glenn’s first stage, which is intended to land on a platform at sea. The company says that stage is designed for a minimum of 25 flights; this is a design target, not a demonstrated reuse count. The cited New Glenn material does not claim that its upper stage is reusable.

Engines and propellants

The vehicles use different propellant combinations and stage arrangements. SpaceX says Starship has six Raptor engines—three for sea-level operation and three for vacuum—and Super Heavy has 33 Raptor engines. Both stages burn subcooled liquid methane and liquid oxygen.

Blue Origin describes New Glenn’s 7×2 configuration as using seven BE-4 engines on the first stage and two restartable BE-3U engines on the upper stage. The booster burns liquid oxygen and liquefied natural gas; the upper stage burns liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. Blue Origin also notes a 9×4 next variant, so the 7×2 engine counts should not be treated as applying to every planned New Glenn configuration.

What the rockets are designed to do

Starship is presented as a transportation system for Earth orbit, the Moon, and Mars, with in-space propellant transfer supporting longer-range missions. New Glenn’s stated emphasis is deploying large payloads into orbit, including higher-energy orbits; Blue Origin publishes separate LEO and GTO capabilities.

Payload mass is only one part of suitability. New Glenn’s seven-metre fairing is a published measure relevant to payload volume, while a vehicle’s destination orbit and mission architecture also affect what it can carry. The published figures alone do not show which rocket is better for a particular payload; that depends on its size, destination, and mission requirements.

Smartivity DIY Rocket Launcher STEM Kit for Kids 6-12 Years | Build Your Own Rocket & Launcher | DIY Science Toy | Birthday Gift for Smart Boys & Girls Ages 6,7,8,9,10,11,12
  • BUILD IT. COUNT DOWN. LAUNCH IT 10 FEET: Kids build their own realistic rocket and durable launcher from precision-cut wooden parts — then press the red launch button and watch it blast up to 10 feet into the air. No batteries, no electricity — pure mechanical action. Winner of the 2025 Parents Choice Award. Designed for kids ages 6 to 12.
  • REAL ROCKET SCIENCE — SERIOUSLY: Every launch teaches Newton's Third Law of Motion — action and reaction — in the most tangible way possible. Kids also discover how rocket propulsion works, what forces keep a rocket on course, and why aerodynamic design matters. These are the same principles behind actual space missions, learned through building and launching.
  • SAFE FOR INDOOR LAUNCHING: The rocket's soft foam tip makes it safe to launch indoors — no need for a backyard or outdoor space. Kids can blast off in the living room, bedroom, or classroom without any risk to people or furniture. The launcher is stable, the rocket is lightweight, and the thrill is completely real.
  • STEM SKILLS BUILT INTO EVERY STEP: Assembling the rocket and launcher teaches structural engineering, spatial reasoning, and mechanical thinking before a single launch takes place. Kids follow illustrated step-by-step instructions to complete the build independently — developing patience, precision, and confidence in their own ability to make things work.
  • RELAUNCHABLE, REPLAYABLE, ENDLESSLY FUN: This isn't a one-shot toy. Kids reload, relaunch, and experiment — adjusting angle, force, and technique to see how high and how far the rocket goes each time. Every launch is a new experiment. Every tweak teaches something new about physics, force, and flight.

Flight record and demonstrated maturity

Mission records provide a snapshot of progress, not proof that the systems offer identical service readiness. Blue Origin reports that New Glenn’s NG-2 mission completed on November 13, 2025: ESCAPADE was deployed into its designated loiter orbit and the first stage landed on the recovery vessel Jacklyn. SpaceX’s launch record lists Starship Flight 14 on September 28, 2026, with the vehicle expended. That entry reflects an active test program, not routine full-system reuse. Flight records can change as each program progresses.

Which comparison matters most?

  • For advertised payload: compare the same destination orbit and reuse assumptions. The published Starship and New Glenn figures do not provide that like-for-like match.
  • For recovery scope: SpaceX describes both Starship stages as reusable; Blue Origin’s stated New Glenn recovery design covers the first stage.
  • For mission goals: Starship is designed for transportation beyond Earth orbit as well as orbital missions; New Glenn is presented as an orbital launcher with published LEO and GTO capabilities.
  • For configuration details: New Glenn’s 7×2 engine description is specific to that configuration, while the company also notes a 9×4 next variant.
