The right Nintendo 3DS alternative depends on what you want to play. For a current portable console with a curated collection of older games, the Nintendo Switch Lite can access Nintendo Classics through a Nintendo Switch Online membership. For original DS, DSi, or 3DS game cards, a compatible used Nintendo 2DS or 3DS-family handheld is the relevant option. Switch systems do not play DS or 3DS games.
Choose by the games you want to play
“Classic handheld games” can mean either older games offered in a modern subscription catalog or the specific games on your original cartridges. Those are different needs, and no single option covers both.

Nintendo Switch Lite: a portable classics library, not a 3DS replacement
Nintendo lists Switch Lite among the systems that can access Nintendo Classics libraries. These are curated digital collections, not a promise that every classic handheld release is available. Features such as suspend points, display filters, rewind, and multiplayer are offered for compatible titles; availability varies by game and library. Nintendo Switch Online classic games

Which libraries require which membership?
| Library | Membership tier |
|---|---|
| Game Boy and Game Boy Color | Nintendo Switch Online |
| Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy | Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack |
| GameCube Classics | Switch 2 only |
Nintendo’s system and library support details are listed on its Nintendo Switch Online FAQ. Virtual Boy has a Switch Lite caveat, so check Nintendo’s current compatibility details for that library before choosing a device. A Switch Lite therefore makes the most sense if the specific titles you want are in an accessible library and you accept membership-based access.

Offline play still requires membership checks
Nintendo says classic games can be played offline for up to seven consecutive days, but an active membership is required and the system periodically verifies membership online. That makes the catalog convenient for travel, but it is not permanent ownership of the games independent of the subscription. Nintendo Switch Online classic games
Original versions and modern conveniences
Nintendo describes its Game Boy Advance titles as reproductions for Switch and Switch 2 and notes that performance and presentation can differ from the original versions. Nintendo Switch Online classic games If you care about original hardware behavior, screen characteristics, or a particular release, that distinction matters; if you mainly want convenient access to selected games, features such as suspend points and rewind may be more useful.

Used Nintendo 2DS or 3DS: the route for original game cards
A 2DS/3DS-family console is the practical choice when the games you want are on DS, DSi, or 3DS cartridges. Nintendo says almost all DS and DSi games work on 3DS-family systems. Exceptions include some games that require accessories inserted into the original DS’s Game Boy Advance slot, which later 3DS-family systems lack. Nintendo DS games playable on Nintendo 3DS

What remains of 3DS digital services

Make the choice
- Write down the exact games. If they are DS or 3DS releases you own on cartridge, look for compatible 2DS/3DS-family hardware. If they are titles in Nintendo Classics, check the library and membership tier.
- Decide whether a subscription is acceptable. Game Boy and Game Boy Color access uses the base Nintendo Switch Online membership; several other libraries require Expansion Pack. Access also depends on an active membership and periodic verification.
- Prioritize original hardware or convenience. A 2DS/3DS-family system is the path for compatible original game cards. Switch Classics offers a separate catalog and features such as rewind or suspend points for compatible games.
- Check the precise compatibility before buying used hardware. Confirm the console supports the game or accessory you need; DS games that rely on the Game Boy Advance slot are notable exceptions. No current prices, stock, repair condition, or seller quality are established here.
