Ninja Theory employees have begun reporting redundancies and job losses, but Xbox has not announced a final studio closure or a confirmed total of affected staff. Xbox said on September 22, 2026, that two proposed agreements for the studio had fallen through and that it would consult employees on a proposed closure while exploring other options. The fate of the studio and its announced game Senua remained unresolved in reporting available by October 7.
What happened at Ninja Theory?
Xbox had planned for Ninja Theory to move to new ownership with funding to complete and grow Senua. That was an announced plan, not a completed transfer. On September 22, Xbox executive Matt Booty said two separate agreements had fallen through. He said the company would begin consulting employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.

On October 5, Video Games Chronicle (VGC) reported that multiple Ninja Theory developers had posted on LinkedIn that they faced redundancy or had already lost their jobs. The reports indicate that job losses have started, but they do not establish a studio-wide total or mean that Xbox has confirmed the studio is closed.

How the ownership plan fell through
July 6: Xbox announces a planned ownership change
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said Ninja Theory and Undead Labs had “entered terms to join new ownership with funding to complete and grow Senua and State of Decay 3.” The statement described a plan that still needed to be completed; it did not announce that Ninja Theory had already transferred to another owner. September 22: Xbox says both agreements fell through
In a later employee update, Booty said: “Unfortunately, two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through. We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.” That language makes the distinction important: consultation on a proposed closure is not an announcement that closure has been finalized. Xbox did not publicly identify the prospective owners or explain why the agreements failed.
How many Ninja Theory employees have been affected?
There is no verified studio-wide redundancy figure in the available reporting. VGC named nine employees who had publicly reported redundancy or job loss: technical sound designer Alessio Mellina, gameplay programmer Katrin Mair, PCap tech staff member Xoe Subari, technical director Loong-Wei Ding, sound designer Matteo Tummino, senior technical artist Matt Le-Fevre, character artist Pietro Berto, technical artist Justin Pedersen, and principal sound designer Daniele Galante. Those names document individual reports; they should not be read as the full number of affected employees.

Xbox’s wider job-reduction figures do not fill that gap. Its July update forecast approximately 3,200 role eliminations across Xbox during FY27, including approximately 1,600 at that time. Its September update announced 268 role eliminations across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. What happens to Senua?
Xbox’s July ownership plan had described funding to complete and grow Senua, but that plan later faltered. VGC reported that the game, announced in June 2026 with a planned 2027 release, had not been officially confirmed cancelled or otherwise resolved. There was no confirmation in the available reporting that it is cancelled, will continue unchanged, or is guaranteed to launch on schedule.

How Ninja Theory’s situation differs from other Xbox studios
Xbox described different outcomes for other studios in the September update: Compulsion Games and Double Fine returned to management with their intellectual property, back catalogs, and runway funding, while Undead Labs transitioned on similar terms and was set to release State of Decay 3 day one on Game Pass. Those announcements do not establish the outcome for Ninja Theory, which remained under consultation over a proposed closure as Xbox explored alternatives.
