Playwright is the better choice for repeatable website testing. It can recreate a page state in code, capture it, and compare later runs with a saved screenshot baseline. Nimbus Capture (also called Nimbus Screenshot in some contexts) is better suited to taking a screenshot by hand, annotating it, and sharing it to explain an issue. The tools overlap in producing an image, but they solve different problems.
Choose by the job you need done
| Need | Nimbus Capture / Nimbus Screenshot | Playwright |
|---|---|---|
| Capture a page quickly by hand | Vendor materials describe visible-page, selected-area, full-page, and scrollable-fragment capture. Nimbus Capture product page; Nimbus capture guide | Open and capture the page through a script or test flow. Playwright screenshots guide |
| Annotate or explain a visual issue | Vendor materials describe editing, blur, annotations, and sharing. These are vendor feature descriptions, not independent test results. Nimbus Capture product page | The screenshot API captures images; the cited documentation does not present it as a point-and-annotate communication editor. Playwright screenshots guide |
| Repeat a capture and check for changes | The reviewed materials describe capture and editing, not scripted regression runs or baseline comparison. Nimbus Capture product page; Nimbus capture guide | Use screenshot assertions in Playwright Test to compare the current image with a stored reference. Playwright visual comparisons |
Use Playwright for an automated check that should run again after a code change. Use Nimbus when a person needs to document what is on screen, mark up a region, blur information, or send visual context to a colleague.

What Playwright adds for repeatable visual checks
Capture a defined page state
Playwright’s screenshot API works inside browser automation, so a test can navigate to a route, perform interactions, and capture after the page reaches the state you want to verify. Its documented screenshot forms include a viewport image, full-page image, image buffer, and element screenshot. Playwright screenshots guide

Compare against a baseline
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion creates a reference screenshot on first use and compares subsequent runs against it. When the interface changes intentionally, update the baseline with --update-snapshots only after reviewing the difference; updating should not be a way to dismiss an unexplained failure. Control what enters the image
Screenshot options include clipping, masking locators, disabling animations, applying styles, selecting an output path, and choosing an image type. These controls can reduce known sources of visual noise, but they do not replace a controlled browser and host environment. Playwright Page screenshot API
Set up a repeatable Playwright screenshot test
The following minimal example uses Playwright Test. It visits a known route and checks a full-page screenshot. Install the project’s Playwright Test package and its browser before running the test; use the same browser and environment for baseline generation and later comparisons. Playwright getting started

Run the test once to create its reference screenshot:

npx playwright testReview the new expected image as part of your test setup. The first run establishes the baseline rather than proving that the appearance is correct.
-
Run it again after the baseline exists. Playwright compares the new capture with the reference and reports a mismatch when the images differ beyond the configured comparison behavior.
-
After a deliberate visual change, inspect the reported diff, then refresh references if the new appearance is intended:

For an element-level check, target a locator rather than capturing the whole page:

await expect(page.getByRole('main')).toHaveScreenshot('main-content.png');
Choose the capture scope that matches the behavior under test. Full-page images can reveal layout shifts below the fold, while a focused element image may make a component-specific change easier to diagnose.
Keep visual baselines stable across runs
A screenshot assertion is only as repeatable as the conditions around it. Playwright explicitly warns that browser rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors; its guide recommends using the same environment that generated the reference image. Playwright visual comparisons
- Keep the execution environment consistent. Run baseline creation and CI comparisons using the same browser setup and host image where possible.
- Control dynamic page content. Hide or mask changing elements such as timestamps, rotating promotions, or user-specific content. Playwright supports screenshot masking and styles for this purpose. Playwright Page screenshot API
- Define the page state explicitly. Navigate to the same URL and perform the same actions before capture. A different login state, data set, or interaction path can create a legitimate image difference.
- Review baseline changes. A mismatch may be a regression or an intentional design update. Inspect the change before accepting an updated reference.
These practices reduce avoidable variability; they do not make rendering identical across arbitrary machines.
Where Nimbus fits alongside automated tests
Nimbus Capture’s vendor materials describe manual capture, annotation, blur, and sharing workflows. A help guide lists visible-page, page-fragment, selected-area, selected-and-scroll, entire-page, and—in Chrome/Chromium—browser-window capture. It also describes editor tools such as text, stickers, blur, and undo/redo. That guide may be older, so confirm current extension availability and feature behavior with the vendor before relying on a specific mode. Nimbus Capture product page; Nimbus capture guide

A separate vendor page describes FuseBase Capture full-page capture and PDF, JPG, or PNG exports, with some listed capabilities marked PRO. Plan features can change, so check current vendor plan information for availability; this comparison does not establish current pricing or feature gating. Nimbus Capture product page
A practical team can use both: let Playwright catch unexpected visual changes in a repeatable test, then use Nimbus when a person needs to annotate and share evidence about a specific defect. Do not treat a manually captured and edited image as an automated regression check.

If your need is to request a website image or PDF from a service rather than build browser automation, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for Playwright’s test assertions: use Playwright when the test must recreate interactions and compare against a maintained baseline.
Or skip the browser setup
For a direct API capture, create an access key and run this cURL request (replace the target URL as needed). The ScreenshotNeo documentation covers request options.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Common issues and fixes
The first run fails or creates a new reference
Screenshot assertions use a reference image. Run the test to establish one, then inspect the generated baseline. A new or updated reference is not automatically an approval of the captured design. Playwright visual comparisons
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe test passes locally but fails in CI
Compare the browser and host setup used for the reference with the CI environment. OS, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode can affect rendering; Playwright recommends the same environment for baseline creation and comparison. Playwright visual comparisons
Only part of the page changes between runs
Identify dynamic content such as dates, rotating content, or user-specific regions. Use screenshot masks or styles to exclude known noise, and make sure the test reaches the same page state each time. Playwright Page screenshot API
A mismatch appears after a design update
Inspect the diff to distinguish the expected design change from an accidental layout regression. If the new result is intended, refresh the baseline using npx playwright test --update-snapshots; otherwise fix the application or stabilize the test input.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Playwright take full-page screenshots?
Yes. Playwright’s screenshot API supports full-page captures, and Playwright Test can assert against a full-page screenshot baseline.
