Nikon Re-Reviews 2026 Winning Cilia Video After AI-Processing Criticism

Nikon is re-reviewing its 2026 winning cilia video after microscopists questioned whether AI-assisted processing faithfully represented the biology.

Nikon’s 2026 Small World in Motion winner used AI-assisted post-processing on microscopy data, according to the entrant and Nikon. Microscopists questioned whether the resulting video faithfully showed the biology. Nikon initially said the described enhancement appeared compliant, then reopened its review; the reporting available here does not establish a final ruling.

What the winning video shows—and how it was made

Nikon named Tsinghua University optical engineer Ning Xu first-place winner in its 2026 Small World in Motion contest. The video depicts abnormal beating of airway cilia associated with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a rare genetic disorder that affects respiratory function, according to The Scientist’s report.

Xu described a workflow that began with grayscale data from diffractive super-resolution microscopy. He said an unsupervised neural network was then used in post-processing to bring out features and visualize the data. The Scientist reported the account; the workflow description is not independent validation of every processing step. TechRadar’s October 1, 2026 report describes the video as captured at 100x magnification.

Why microscopists questioned the display

The central criticism is not simply that an AI tool was involved. It is whether the processing changed the image enough that viewers could mistake the visualization for a faithful record of the specimen’s structures and motion.

  • Focal length in 35 mm [135] format equivalent to approx; 1.5x that of lenses with FX format angle of view
  • Robert Hirst, a lead scientist who uses microscopy to diagnose PCD, told The Scientist that some details looked inconsistent with nature. He also warned that the video could give viewers a misleading impression of how cilia relate to cells. Hirst cited about 200 cilia per cell; that is his estimate in this coverage, not an independently established count here.
  • Christophe Leterrier, a neuroscientist and former Nikon Small World jury member, said the processing had altered the original image too much.
  • Melanie White, a cell biologist who uses quantitative imaging, said it was difficult to tell whether the displayed image faithfully represented the biology.

Those are expert concerns, not proof that the video was fabricated. Xu framed the distinction this way: “There is an important difference between using AI to create something that was never in the experiment and using AI to process or visualize real experimental data.” He also said, “The important question is not simply [if] AI was used; we should ask how was it used.” Both remarks were quoted by The Scientist.

What Nikon’s rules say—and what the company has said

The Small World in Motion rules state: “AI generated videos are not permitted and Sponsor holds the right to request the original video for verification.” They also require a light microscope and microscope objective, but do not require Nikon-branded equipment.

In The Scientist’s account, a Nikon spokesperson said the entrant used an AI-assisted enhancement tool during post-processing. Nikon described this as enhancing microscopy-generated source data rather than generating an image from scratch and said the use appeared compliant based on the information then available. The spokesperson also said Nikon was reviewing its AI policy and reinvestigating and reevaluating the entry.

TechRadar later reported that Nikon was carefully re-reviewing its initial vetting alongside additional technical materials supplied by Xu. These statements describe an ongoing review, not a final decision. The available coverage does not establish whether Nikon ultimately found a rule violation or changed the result.

How to assess the dispute

AI use alone does not answer whether an image is reliable or whether it meets a contest rule. The key questions are what the tool changed, whether the processing is disclosed well enough to assess, and whether the resulting visualization preserves the biological features being interpreted.

  • Source: Did the workflow begin with recorded microscopy data, or was visual content created without an experimental source?
  • Operation: Did processing clarify existing data, or add, remove, or alter structures?
  • Biological fidelity: Does the display preserve the specimen’s scale, relationships, and motion in ways researchers can interpret?
  • Rule interpretation: How does Nikon apply its ban on AI-generated videos to enhancement or visualization of experimental footage?

The published rule establishes a ban on AI-generated videos and gives Nikon the right to request original footage. It does not, on its own, resolve how Nikon classifies Xu’s described post-processing in this specific case. Until the company’s review is resolved, the distinction between enhancement and generation remains central to both the scientific criticism and the contest question.
