Google says Gemini 4 Argon is a frontier model for software engineering, enterprise work and cybersecurity. But anonymous Google employees cited in recent reporting say its performance in some practical coding tasks—and, according to one account, front-end design—has not always matched expectations set by benchmarks. Google disputes the coding characterization. The available evidence does not settle the disagreement: Google has published benchmark scores, while the contrary accounts are anonymous and no public task-level results allow readers to reproduce them.
What is the disagreement about?
Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026, presenting it as a model built for long-running software engineering, enterprise knowledge work such as finance and legal work, and cyber defense. The launch drew scrutiny after Bloomberg cited anonymous Google employees who said practical performance did not always match the benchmarks, particularly on some coding work. The Los Angeles Times also reported that one source considered front-end design a weakness, while describing a range of employee opinion rather than a consensus.

Google rejected the claim that Gemini 4 is underperforming in coding. In comments reported by 9to5Google and the Los Angeles Times, the company pointed to leadership confidence and internal tests. That is Google’s response, not an independent demonstration of how the model performs in users’ workflows.
What do Google’s benchmark figures show?
In its September 30 launch post, Google reported these results for Argon. The figures are company-reported results on named evaluations, not independent measurements of everyday performance.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro XL; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
| Evaluation or specification | Google’s reported result | What Google says it covers |
|---|---|---|
| DeepSWE v1.1 | 77.9% | Long-horizon software engineering tasks |
| AutomationBench | 51.3% | End-to-end execution across core business functions |
| LVBench | 91.7% | Long-video understanding |
| CWE-bench v1 | 68%; Google says Argon ties for first place | Cybersecurity evaluation |
| Output-token limit | 1 million, compared with the 64,000-token limit Google cites for the prior model | Maximum output length announced by Google |
All scores and the token-limit comparison in the table come from Google’s September 30 announcement. They describe results on specific evaluations or a stated capacity; they do not establish that Argon will perform equally well across different tasks or real workplace conditions.
Why benchmarks and workplace reports can differ
A benchmark measures performance under the conditions and scoring rules of a particular evaluation. A workplace task may involve a different codebase, design constraints, tools, review standards or need for repeated revisions. A high result on a software-engineering benchmark therefore does not, by itself, confirm that a model will be reliable in every coding workflow.

- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
The distinction also applies to the criticism: anonymous employee impressions are not a measured score. The reports do not publish the prompts, tasks, model settings or results behind those accounts, so readers cannot assess how representative they are. As the Los Angeles Times reported, employees did not all share the same view. Edwin Chen, founder of Surge AI, told the paper that benchmark performance does not necessarily translate into real-world performance; he was discussing the general limitation of benchmarks, not reporting a direct test of Argon.

Not at launch. Google initially made Argon available to trusted cybersecurity partners and testers through its Fairwind Program. It said wider availability would follow additional safety testing, beginning with paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers, but did not give a firm date in the launch post. Ars Technica likewise noted that readers could not use the model at launch.

- Google Pixel 10 Pro is the ultimate Pixel experience, featuring advanced AI with Gemini, unbelievable camera quality, impeccable design in two sizes, and the next-gen Google Tensor G5 chip[1]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works - Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Get a head start on syncing your data before it even arrives: After you purchase your new Pixel, look for an email that explains how to transfer your photos, videos, passwords, and more in just a few quick steps[11]
- Pixel’s pro camera system makes everything look amazing, even in low light; capture more of the scene with advanced Google AI models, and bring out incredible details with 100x Pro Res Zoom, stunning 50 MP images, and super steady videos in 8K[10]
- Pixel 10 Pro is built with durable aluminum and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for scratch and drop resistance; the 6.3-inch Super Actua display with 3,300-nit peak brightness is easy on the eyes, even in direct sunlight[3,13,18]
That staged rollout matters: without broad access or a public set of employee task results, the reported accounts cannot yet be checked against a reproducible independent test of ordinary coding or design workflows. Google’s planned API and subscription access may make wider evaluation possible later, but that is not evidence of current independent validation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can readers reasonably conclude?
- Google has published strong results on several named benchmarks and describes Argon as a model for multiple demanding domains.
- Anonymous employee accounts reported by Bloomberg and summarized by other outlets raise specific concerns about some coding tasks; one Los Angeles Times account also mentions front-end design.
- Google disputes the coding criticism, citing its confidence and internal tests.
- The public material available at launch does not resolve the disagreement or support a broad conclusion about Argon’s performance in all real-world work.
For any later comparison with another model, the useful questions are whether the same task and evaluation version were used, whether results come from a public benchmark or an actual workflow, and whether the evidence is a vendor claim, independent measurement or attributed employee opinion. A score from one category—such as long-video understanding—cannot settle a dispute about coding.
