The right choice is the specific shoe whose cushioning, stability feel, intended pace and fit match your running. Nike currently organizes its road range around responsive Pegasus, supportive Structure and maximum-cushioning Vomero. Adidas positions Supernova for everyday miles, Adizero for speed and Ultraboost for a highly cushioned ride. Those are useful starting points from each company, not proof that one brand performs better for every runner.
Use the guide below to narrow the choice by workout, then confirm the exact model on your feet. Toe room, heel security and comfort matter more than a brand-wide reputation for width or sizing.

Start with the run you actually do
Choosing by logo is a shortcut that can send you into the wrong ride. A daily road trainer, a tempo shoe and a max-cushion comfort shoe make different compromises, even when they come from the same company. Begin with your most common run and the sensation you want underfoot.
| What you want | Nike starting point | Adidas starting point | Compare in person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday road miles with a responsive feel | Pegasus (the current Nike page lists Pegasus 42) | Supernova; Adizero SL for a lighter, responsive daily option | Underfoot feel, comfortable fit, normal pace and expected distance |
| Supportive or guided-feeling cushioning | Structure, including Structure 26 | Supernova Rise models, which use Support Rods in the company guide | How stable the shoe feels to you and whether the fit stays secure; do not treat it as a diagnosis or gait correction |
| Maximum cushioning and comfort | Vomero | Ultraboost, including Ultraboost 5X in the shoe-selection guide | Cushioning preference, ride weight and comfort on longer outings |
| Faster workouts and tempo running | Pegasus may suit responsive training runs, but it is not established here as a race shoe | Adizero, including Boston 13 for speed training and tempo runs | Purpose of the workout, secure fit and whether the response feels controllable at your pace |
This is a comparison of stated product positioning, not a controlled Nike-versus-Adidas performance ranking. A shoe can feel very different from another model in its own brand, so compare the named models rather than assuming every Nike or every Adidas shoe shares one fit or ride.

How the two lineups are currently described
Nike: Pegasus, Structure and Vomero
Nike’s November 20, 2024 running-line announcement describes three road-cushioning roles. Pegasus is the responsive-cushioning option, Structure is the supportive-cushioning option and Vomero is the maximum-cushioning family. Nike’s current running page returned in the available material lists Pegasus 42, while the Structure 26 product page describes supportive cushioning for everyday road runs.
Think of those labels as a sorting system. Pegasus is the logical first try when you want one versatile road shoe that does not feel deliberately soft. Structure is the place to investigate when you prefer a more guided or planted sensation. Vomero is aimed at runners who prioritize abundant cushioning and comfort over a minimalist, close-to-the-ground feel.
Adidas: Supernova, Adizero and Ultraboost
Adidas’s current US running category describes Supernova as an everyday-running family, Adizero as speed-oriented and Ultraboost as maximum-cushioning footwear. The catalog currently lists Supernova Rise 3 and Adizero Boston 13. A separate shoe-selection guide discusses Supernova Rise 2 with Dreamstrike+ cushioning and Support Rods, Adizero SL 2 as a versatile daily shoe and Ultraboost 5X for maximum cushioning.

Because catalogs change at different times in different markets, treat the generation numbers as a check point, not a promise that every colorway or country has the same specification. Boston 13’s product description highlights Lightstrike Pro cushioning and speed-oriented use; the exact details can vary by colorway or market.
Pick by use case
For most easy and steady road runs
Start with Nike Pegasus or Adidas Supernova. Pegasus is the clearer choice if you want the brand’s explicitly responsive category. Supernova is the clearer choice if you want Adidas’s everyday-running family. Try Adidas Adizero SL when you want a lighter, more responsive daily option without selecting a model described primarily for racing.

During a try-on, walk and jog at your normal pace if the retailer permits it. The better shoe is the one that feels natural at that pace, with no pressure at the toes and no slipping at the heel. Do not decide solely from the amount of foam visible in the midsole.
For a guided or supportive sensation
Nike identifies Structure with supportive cushioning, and Structure 26 is described for everyday road runs. Adidas’s guide identifies Support Rods in Supernova Rise 2. That information tells you where to start looking; it does not prove that either shoe treats overpronation, corrects a gait problem or is medically appropriate for you.
If you have recurring pain, numbness or an injury diagnosis, a clinician or qualified running professional should address that issue. For an ordinary shoe decision, compare how each model feels when you walk, jog and turn. A stable sensation that is comfortable is more relevant than a label you assume must apply to your foot.
For long, comfortable miles
Compare Nike Vomero with Adidas Ultraboost. Nike places Vomero in its maximum-cushioning group; Adidas uses Ultraboost for a cushioned, comfortable ride and lists Ultraboost 5X in its selection guide. Extra cushioning can feel luxurious to one runner and cumbersome to another, so pay attention to weight, transition and heat as well as softness.
Use the longest realistic try-on you can manage. A shoe that feels pleasant for two minutes may create pressure once your feet swell. Make sure your heel stays held without overtightening the laces and that your toes can spread without touching the front.

For tempo sessions and faster workouts
Adidas’s official US catalog specifically calls Adizero Boston 13 suitable for speed training and tempo runs, with Lightstrike Pro cushioning in its product description. Nike’s Pegasus sits in the responsive-cushioning category and may work for responsive training runs, but the available evidence does not establish it as a race shoe or a direct Boston equivalent.
For faster work, check that the upper holds your foot when you accelerate, that the forefoot bends where your foot bends and that the ride remains predictable when you change pace. A shoe that feels fast but unstable at your normal training speed is a poor match, regardless of its advertised category.
Fit and sizing: use the exact model, not a brand stereotype
Claims such as “Nike is narrow” or “Adidas is wide” are too broad for the evidence available. Shape, upper materials, heel construction and even a different generation can change the fit within one brand. Nike’s Structure product page includes a model-specific fit question, and Adidas’s guide tells runners to determine which cushioning feels good to them; neither supports a universal Nike-versus-Adidas sizing rule.
A practical fitting sequence
- Check the model’s own size guidance. Start with the size chart and fit notes for Pegasus 42, Structure 26, Vomero, Supernova, Adizero or Ultraboost rather than relying on another shoe you own.
- Try both feet. Feet are rarely identical. Fit the larger or longer foot and make sure the smaller foot can be secured without excessive tightening.
- Leave usable toe room. Your toes should not hit the front when you walk downhill or when your foot expands during a run. Extra length is not a substitute for a secure midfoot.
- Test heel hold. Walk, jog and make a few controlled turns. Heel lift, rubbing or the need to cinch the laces painfully are warning signs.
- Check pressure points. Look for tightness across the widest part of the foot, seams touching sensitive areas or an arch sensation that feels intrusive.
- Use your running socks. A different sock thickness can change the fit enough to alter the decision.
- Compare sensations, not just numbers. If one shoe is a half-size different but comfortable and secure while the nominally identical size is not, comfort is the more useful result.
When possible, try both brands on the same day and repeat the same short jog. That limits the effect of memory and lets you compare toe room, heel hold and cushioning directly.
What the evidence can and cannot tell you
The available material comes from official Nike and Adidas pages and company announcements. Those sources are useful for current category descriptions and model features, but they are not neutral laboratory tests comparing the brands. No controlled head-to-head test, universal sizing comparison or brand-wide winner has been established here.

That distinction matters when reading performance language. “Responsive,” “supportive,” “maximum cushioning,” “speed-oriented” and “comfortable” describe the intended character of a product. They do not guarantee a particular pace, injury outcome or fit for every runner. Availability, specifications and model names can change by market, so verify the exact local listing before buying.
How to interpret Adidas’s Ultraboost figures
Adidas reported company-sponsored results for Ultraboost 5 from a 2023 study. According to Adidas, 82% of surveyed runners preferred the shoe’s energy return to that of their own shoe, and seven out of 10 testers said they had more fun running in Ultraboost 5 than in their own shoe. Adidas reported that the study involved 307 people from 35 countries, who ran a total of 460 kilometers over 35 days in August and September 2023.
Those numbers describe participants’ responses to Ultraboost 5; they are not an independent comparison with Nike and should not be used to claim that Adidas is superior. They also do not tell you whether Ultraboost 5X, a later catalog entry, will feel identical. Treat them as company-reported context rather than a buying guarantee.
A decision path you can follow in a store
- Name your main run. Choose everyday mileage, supportive comfort, maximum cushioning or faster workouts. If you split your training evenly, identify the run you want one pair to handle best.
- Select one starting model from each side. For example, compare Pegasus 42 with Supernova, Structure 26 with a Supernova Rise model, Vomero with Ultraboost or Pegasus with Adizero Boston 13 for a speed-focused session.
- Match the intended pace. Jog at the pace you normally use for that purpose. A shoe that feels lively only when you sprint may not be suitable for easy days.
- Run the fit checklist. Confirm toe room, heel hold, midfoot comfort and freedom from pressure points.
- Notice the ride after several minutes. Ask whether the cushioning feels too firm, too soft, unstable, heavy or simply right. Do not let a dramatic first impression outweigh sustained comfort.
- Check return terms and local availability. Product catalogs and policies differ by country and retailer. Keep the receipt and follow the seller’s rules before taking a new pair outdoors.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing the logo instead of the model
Nike and Adidas each sell shoes for several different purposes. A comfortable experience in one Pegasus does not establish that Structure or Vomero will fit the same way, and an Adidas Supernova experience does not predict Boston or Ultraboost. Compare the model’s role and construction.
Assuming support is a prescription
Support elements can change the sensation underfoot, but the available descriptions do not establish a universal treatment for pronation or pain. If a shoe causes discomfort, stop using it and reassess the fit or seek professional advice.
Buying from a generation number alone
Pegasus 42, Structure 26, Supernova Rise 3 and Boston 13 identify current catalog generations in the cited pages, while the Adidas guide also discusses Rise 2, Adizero SL 2 and Ultraboost 5X. A newer number is not automatically better for your foot. Check the exact product page, market and colorway.

Ignoring pace and distance
A cushioned shoe can be ideal for easy miles but feel cumbersome for intervals. A responsive speed-oriented shoe can feel exciting in a short session but less comfortable for a relaxed long run. Make the intended use explicit before trying anything on.
Reading marketing claims as independent tests
Brand descriptions and company-reported surveys are not the same as controlled, independent comparisons. Use them to shortlist shoes, then let the model-specific fit and ride decide.

Quick recommendations by runner priority
| If your priority is… | Try first | Why this is a starting point | Confirm before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| One responsive daily road shoe | Nike Pegasus 42 or Adidas Supernova | Both are positioned for everyday road use, with Nike explicitly emphasizing responsiveness and Adidas emphasizing everyday running | Which cushioning and upper feel better at your usual pace |
| A lighter daily option | Adidas Adizero SL 2 | Adidas’s guide describes it as a versatile daily shoe | Whether the lighter, quicker sensation remains comfortable on your normal distance |
| Guided-feeling cushioning | Nike Structure 26 or a Supernova Rise model | Nike labels Structure supportive; Adidas cites Support Rods in Rise 2 | Stability feel, pressure points and secure fit; no assumption of medical correction |
| Plush comfort | Nike Vomero or Adidas Ultraboost | Both brands place these families in their maximum-cushioning or cushioned-comfort roles | Ride weight, heat, heel hold and comfort after several minutes |
| Tempo and speed training | Adidas Adizero Boston 13; compare Nike Pegasus if you prefer its feel | Adidas specifically identifies Boston 13 for speed training and tempo runs; Pegasus is positioned as responsive | Secure fit, controlled transitions and suitability for the workout you actually perform |
When to choose each brand first
Start with Nike if…
- You want to begin with a clearly labeled responsive, supportive or maximum-cushioning category.
- Pegasus, Structure or Vomero gives you the best toe room and heel hold in your actual size.
- You prefer the way a particular Nike midsole and upper feel, regardless of the logo.
Start with Adidas if…
- You want to explore a family organized around everyday running, speed or cushioned comfort.
- Adizero Boston 13 matches your tempo-training use, or Adizero SL 2 fits your daily running better.
- Supernova, Supernova Rise or Ultraboost feels more natural and secure on your foot.
Neither list is a claim that one company is better. It simply maps the stated lineups to common priorities so you can make a shorter, more useful try-on list.
Questions to answer before paying
- What percentage of your running will happen in this pair?
- Do you want a responsive, guided-feeling or highly cushioned ride?
- Can you wiggle your toes without touching the front?
- Does your heel stay put without painful lace pressure?
- Will the shoe remain comfortable at your normal distance, not just during a brief walk?
- Are the model name, generation, colorway and availability correct for your market?
If you cannot answer those questions, postpone the purchase and try the exact models again. A familiar brand name is not a substitute for a secure, comfortable fit.
