You can change AI providers without starting from zero, but there is no universal “move my account” button. Treat the change as a staged migration: preserve an export, separate durable preferences from chat history, inventory files and automations, rebuild integrations, test real tasks, and keep the original account until the replacement is dependable.
An archive can preserve useful conversation content while still losing the surrounding product experience. Depending on the provider, imported data may not recreate individual chats, memories, uploaded files, custom assistants, subscriptions, workspace access, tool connections, or scheduled jobs.

What a provider switch really moves
AI services store several different kinds of state. A conversation transcript is only one of them, and it is often the easiest part to copy. Before you move anything, classify each asset by what the destination can accept and what you will have to recreate.

The safest assumption is that an export is a backup, not a seamless clone. Design the move so every important item has an owner, a copy and a verification test.

Build an inventory before requesting an export
Make the checklist while the old account is still fully usable. Include items you use weekly as well as anything that would be expensive or impossible to reconstruct.
- Mark important conversations by project, date and business value.
- List durable preferences, terminology, response formats and recurring constraints.
- Record project instructions, reusable prompts, custom assistants and evaluation examples.
- Gather original files, attachment names, source locations and the latest approved versions.
- Document connected apps, API keys, endpoints, tool or function definitions and required scopes. Record secret names and rotation procedures, not plaintext secrets in a general notes file.
- List scheduled jobs, webhooks, automations, approval steps and human hand-offs.
- For API products, record the identifiers and status that your own system owns: conversation IDs, external database references, tool results, queued work and outstanding tasks.
- Classify every line as export, recreate, reconnect or verify.
This inventory prevents the common mistake of discovering an important integration only after the old account has been closed.
Export the source data and preserve an untouched backup
Use the source provider’s current export control and request it from the account that owns the data. Download the archive yourself, keep an untouched copy in access-controlled storage, and open a working copy to confirm that it contains the expected files. Preserve the original before renaming, splitting or converting anything.

OpenAI’s documented personal-account procedure uses an exported ZIP. Extract it and locate conversations.json; some exports contain numbered conversation JSON files instead. If the file is too large for one upload, split it or select only the files needed for a particular migration. The resulting material is uploaded into a new chat in the destination personal account as reference.
That process is explicitly not a full account migration. It does not merge accounts, recreate each old chat or restore the old sidebar. It also does not move memories, custom GPTs, uploaded files, settings, subscriptions or workspace membership. Treat the uploaded archive as a searchable source for rebuilding work, not as a replacement account.
Claude export
Individual Free, Pro and Max users can start a Claude export from Settings > Privacy on the web app or Claude Desktop. Mobile apps cannot initiate the export. The download link is delivered by email and expires 24 hours after it is sent, so download it promptly and store the resulting file securely.
For Team or Enterprise accounts, Anthropic identifies the organization’s Primary Owner as the person who handles exports. Plan that hand-off before a staff member leaves or an organization changes ownership.

Other source accounts
If the provider’s help page does not document a machine-readable export, save the data you are permitted to retain through its current account controls and manually capture the durable context, prompts and source files in your inventory. Do not assume that a browser download, an API transcript or a printed conversation contains settings, files or automation state.
Create a portable context brief
Raw transcripts are valuable for reference but inefficient as a daily operating context. Create a short document that can be pasted into almost any destination:
- How you want answers structured, including tone, units, spelling and output formats.
- Active projects, their goals, status, terminology and known constraints.
- Recurring facts the assistant may use, with a note about which facts are sensitive or temporary.
- Links, file names and system locations needed to resume work.
- Examples of a good answer and unacceptable behavior.
- Open decisions, pending tasks and the person or system responsible for each one.
You can ask the source assistant to draft this summary, but review every line yourself. Remove secrets, personal information and obsolete assumptions before importing it. Keep the brief separate from the raw archive so it remains reusable even when a destination cannot read the original format.
Gemini memory import
Gemini documents a separate memory-import process rather than treating memory as part of a chat archive. Its help flow provides a suggested prompt that you copy into the source AI, review and copy the generated summary, then paste into Gemini’s import settings. This is a useful pattern even when you are moving between other providers: preferences should be edited as a distinct, human-reviewed asset.

Use the destination’s supported import path
Moving into a personal ChatGPT account
- Extract the source ZIP and find
conversations.jsonor the numbered conversation JSON files. - Sign in to the destination personal account and start a new chat.
- Upload the archive or selected files as reference material.
- Ask the destination to locate representative projects and confirm that the imported content is understandable.
- Recreate memories, custom assistants, files, settings and integrations separately; they are not restored by the conversation upload.
Do not describe this as account merging. The documented method gives the new account access to the uploaded information in a chat, not the old account’s interface or permissions.
Moving into a personal Claude account
Anthropic states that exported Claude data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account and that it does not support migration between personal accounts. Keep the export as your archive, then move the portable context brief, source files, prompts and workflow documentation into the new service through whatever inputs it supports. If you are moving into a Team or Enterprise organization, follow that organization’s separate migration route instead of assuming a personal export will import.
Importing history into Gemini Apps
Google’s current Gemini Apps help describes separate memory and chat-history imports. The history importer requires a personal Google Account and an account holder aged 18 or older. It is not currently available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the United Kingdom. The importer accepts ZIP archives up to 5 GB per file and permits up to five ZIP uploads per day. Processing may take up to a day.

An additional import adds new conversations but overwrites previously imported conversations. If an import is interrupted, it may be partial; delete that partial import and retry rather than assuming the missing items will be filled automatically. Gemini’s chat-history import does not bring project files, attachments or generated images, so upload required files directly after the history is available.

After history is available, work through your inventory one workflow at a time. Re-enter the system or project instructions, restore the needed files, reauthorize integrations and recreate tool definitions. Then run a representative task from input to final output.
For prompt-based work
- Paste the reviewed context brief into the destination’s memory or project instructions, if those controls exist.
- Recreate reusable prompts and include an example output for each one.
- Upload the current source files instead of relying on attachment references from the old transcript.
- Check formatting, citations, language, units and refusal or escalation behavior against your old examples.
For connected tools and automations
- Create new credentials with the minimum required permissions and record their owners.
- Rebuild tool and function schemas, including required fields, allowed values and error responses.
- Reconnect webhooks, schedulers and queues, then run them in a test environment.
- Confirm where logs, approvals and human review are stored.
- Verify retries and duplicate handling before enabling production triggers.
A transcript can show that a tool was called, but it usually does not contain the live credentials, endpoint behavior or external record that made the call useful.
Preserve state in API-based applications
If your product uses an AI API, separate provider-managed conversation context from the state your application owns. Export or back up your database, prompt versions, tool results, user records, queue status and external document references independently.
Gemini’s Interactions API illustrates the distinction: a new interaction can continue a history through a previous interaction ID, while tools and system instructions are scoped to the interaction and may need to be supplied again. During a provider change, map old IDs to new IDs in your own database and explicitly resend the tools and instructions required for each call.
Before cutover, replay representative requests against the destination with the same inputs and expected schemas. Compare tool-call arguments, structured-output validity, error handling, latency requirements and human approval points. Keep a feature flag or routing switch so you can return selected traffic to the old provider while defects are corrected.
Review privacy, retention and administration
Migration archives can contain private prompts, uploaded documents, customer information and secrets accidentally pasted into chats. Review the destination’s consumer and organization policies before uploading, and restrict archive access to the people who need it.

Gemini states that imported and continued chats are saved in Activity and used to improve its services, including training generative AI models. Its Activity controls let users manage or delete that data, and Google’s Privacy Policy applies. Decide whether the destination’s activity and retention settings are acceptable before importing sensitive history.
Do not apply API retention language to consumer chat products. OpenAI’s developer documentation says API abuse-monitoring logs may contain prompts and responses and are retained by default for up to 30 days, subject to exceptions and eligible controls. Those API-specific controls require eligibility and, in some cases, approval. Check the policy for the exact product and account type you are using.
Verify the new setup before closing the old one
Use a written acceptance checklist and keep evidence of each result. A migration is ready only when the checks that matter to your work pass.
- Open the untouched archive and confirm that expected conversations and files are present.
- Find several representative projects in the destination and verify that the imported text is complete and legible.
- Ask the destination to follow your context brief and check tone, terminology and standing constraints.
- Upload required source files and confirm that the workflow can cite or transform them correctly.
- Run each rebuilt integration with test credentials or a sandbox endpoint.
- Exercise success, validation-error, timeout and retry paths.
- Confirm that scheduled jobs, webhooks, queues and human approvals behave as documented.
- Check organization ownership, member access, billing responsibility and retention settings.
- Have a second person review the archive location and recovery procedure.
Keep the source account and backup until these checks pass and any administrator confirms that access and retention requirements are satisfied. Deleting first removes your easiest rollback.
How to compare potential destinations
Use the same questions for every provider instead of judging portability from a marketing claim or a single successful upload.

Common failure modes and fixes
The destination shows one giant archive instead of old chats
This is expected for a reference-style import. Keep the original archive for searching, then create native destination conversations for active projects and link them to the relevant source files and context brief.

History and memory are separate assets. Paste the reviewed context brief into the destination’s memory or project settings, then test a few explicit preferences in a fresh conversation.
A project opens but its attachments are missing
Re-upload the original files and check their current versions. Imported messages can mention an attachment without carrying the binary file or its permissions.
An automation runs but produces different results
Compare system instructions, tool schemas, model settings, input serialization and error handling. Reauthorize the integration and test with a known fixture before enabling live traffic.
An import stops partway through
For Gemini’s documented history importer, an interruption can leave a partial import. Delete the partial result and retry. For any provider, keep the source archive unchanged and use a smaller test set if the service imposes file or request limits.

The old organization is about to be closed
Pause the closure. Confirm that the export was performed by the correct owner, that required members can access the destination and that retention or legal-hold obligations are satisfied. Organization transfers can have ownership rules that personal-account instructions do not cover.
Make the next provider switch easier
Portability improves when you stop treating one chat product as the only system of record. Store canonical documents, prompt versions, workflow definitions, evaluation cases and application state in locations you control. Keep a current context brief and a file manifest, and periodically verify that backups can be opened.
For every important workflow, maintain a provider-neutral specification: inputs, expected outputs, tools, permissions, failure behavior, review points and a small test suite. When a provider changes, you can implement that specification again instead of reverse-engineering years of transcripts.
The practical finish line is not a perfect visual copy of the old account. It is a verified destination that can recover the information you need, reproduce the work your team relies on and meet the privacy and administrative rules that govern it.
