Investigate it by preserving the original finding, confirming the underlying event in raw logs, correlating identity, resource, network and workload evidence, testing every claim in the AI explanation, and obtaining an authorization decision from the resource owner. Only then classify the case, close or escalate it, and consider narrowly scoped tuning.
Microsoft explicitly instructs customers to review AI-generated findings for accuracy before making remediation decisions or communicating results to stakeholders. The same discipline applies to any cloud provider or security product: the detector can identify a pattern, but your logs and environment context establish what actually happened.

What a false positive is—and what it is not
A false positive is an alert about activity that is not malicious. It is different from a benign true positive: a benign true positive is genuinely suspicious activity that did occur, but was authorized, such as an approved penetration test or a planned administrative action. A malicious true positive is real, unauthorized harmful activity.
| Classification | Did the activity occur? | Was it malicious? | Typical outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Malicious true positive | Yes | Yes | Escalate and follow incident-response procedures. |
| Benign true positive | Yes | No, but it matched a suspicious rule or behavior | Record the authorization and improve context or narrowly tune detection. |
| False positive | No, or the detector misinterpreted nonmalicious activity | No | Document the evidence and close through the platform workflow. |
An AI label such as “false positive” does not establish that the activity was harmless. It may have inferred intent from incomplete telemetry, confused two principals, used stale configuration, or assigned the wrong criticality. Treat the explanation as a set of claims that must be checked against primary evidence.

1. Preserve the finding and define its scope
Do not edit away the original alert while investigating it. Save the detector’s record, including the generated narrative, because later analysts need to know exactly what the model saw and claimed.
- Finding or alert identifier and source product.
- Detection timestamp, including the time zone, and the time the alert was received.
- Cloud account, subscription or tenant; region; resource identifier; and environment such as production, staging or development.
- Principal involved: user, role, service account, workload identity or unknown actor.
- Severity, confidence or criticality values shown by the product.
- The complete AI-generated explanation, evidence references and any links or event identifiers supplied by the product.
- Current owner, investigating analyst, priority and target response time.
Assign an owner and prioritize the case before drawing a conclusion. AWS describes triage as routing findings to the appropriate stakeholder, assessing and prioritizing them, and then remediating. A low-severity alert affecting a sensitive production identity can deserve faster attention than a high-volume alert in an isolated test account; record the reason for your priority rather than silently changing it.
2. Verify that the underlying activity really happened
The fastest way to expose a false positive is to compare the alert with the raw records produced by the affected service and to ask the resource owner what was expected. Microsoft Defender for Cloud guidance recommends both steps: contact the resource owner and investigate raw logs generated by the resource.
Recommended Free Tools
- Locate the primary event. Start with the log that records the claimed action: an API audit event, authentication record, process or application log, data-access record, or network flow. Use the alert’s timestamp, account and resource as search constraints.
- Check the event’s identity fields. Confirm the principal, session, source address, user agent, role chain and authentication method. A display name can conceal a different immutable identity.
- Check the target and action. Match the resource identifier, region, API operation, object name and result code. Distinguish a successful change from a denied attempt or a simulated request.
- Check timing. Account for UTC offsets, ingestion delay, retries and scheduled jobs. A nearby event in a different time zone is not automatically the event in the alert.
- Ask the owner for context. Request the change ticket, deployment record, test plan, maintenance window or other authorization evidence. Capture the owner’s name, response time and exact scope of the approval.
- Preserve supporting records. Export or reference the relevant raw events and retain them with the finding. Do not rely on a screenshot of a filtered dashboard when the underlying record can be retained.
If no primary event supports the alert, do not immediately assume the detector is wrong. Check retention, ingestion failures, account or region scope, clock skew and whether the product is reporting a derived event from another source. “Not found” is an evidence gap until those possibilities are addressed.
3. Correlate evidence across the environment
One detector rarely contains enough context to establish intent or impact. Correlate the finding with identity activity, resource and configuration state, network telemetry, service logs, application logs and authorized changes. AWS identifies CloudTrail, VPC Flow Logs, Route 53 Resolver logs, and infrastructure and application logs as useful sources for correlation and enrichment.

| Evidence source | What to compare | Questions it can answer |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and access logs | Sign-in, token issuance, role assumption, privilege changes, MFA or conditional-access results | Was the principal authenticated as expected? Did another identity or role chain precede the action? |
| API and control-plane audit logs | Operation, parameters, response, caller, region and event time | Did the claimed change occur, and was it successful? |
| Resource configuration and history | Current state, prior state, version, tags and deployment history | Does the resource state support the alert’s claim? Was a legitimate deployment changing it? |
| VPC Flow Logs or equivalent network telemetry | Source and destination, ports, bytes, accept or reject result and flow time | Was there a connection, in which direction, and did it reach the claimed resource? |
| Route 53 Resolver logs or equivalent DNS telemetry | Queried name, client, response and time | Did the workload resolve the domain associated with the alert? |
| Service and application logs | Request IDs, job names, errors, user actions and application-level outcomes | Was the activity generated by a known job, deployment or user workflow? |
| Change, deployment and test records | Approved window, operator, scope and rollback details | Was the behavior authorized, and did it match the stated change? |
Join records using stable identifiers whenever possible: request IDs, session IDs, resource IDs and immutable principal IDs. Use timestamps only after normalizing time zones and allowing for ingestion delay. The objective is to establish context and criticality, not to let one system’s severity score stand in for an investigation.
4. Test the AI explanation claim by claim
Break the generated narrative into individual assertions. For each assertion, identify the event or field that should support it, then mark the assertion as supported, contradicted, unverified or outside the available telemetry.

| Claim to test | Evidence check | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| “Principal performed action X.” | Match immutable principal, session or role chain in the raw event. | A friendly name alone is insufficient. |
| “Action targeted resource Y.” | Match full resource identifier, account or tenant and region. | Similar names in another account can create a false match. |
| “Activity occurred at time T.” | Compare event time, time zone, ingestion time and related events. | Nearby timestamps may represent retries or a different session. |
| “Behavior is unusual or high risk.” | Compare baseline, configuration, network path and approved changes. | Unusual does not equal unauthorized. |
| “The event indicates impact.” | Look for successful results, data access, persistence, execution or other impact evidence. | A blocked attempt or failed request may not have caused harm. |
Check that all events cited by the explanation refer to the same resource, principal, timeframe and scope. Record contradictory evidence explicitly. For example, an AI narrative may describe an external connection while flow logs show only an internal address, or it may attribute a deployment to a human user when the audit trail shows a CI/CD role. Also record missing telemetry: an absent log source limits confidence but does not prove the contrary.
Microsoft’s Attack Investigation Agent documentation states that its output is AI-generated and grounded in data available through Defender APIs, and instructs users to review findings for accuracy before remediation decisions or stakeholder communications. That warning is operational guidance, not a claim that the feature is unreliable; it means the analyst remains accountable for validating the result.
5. Confirm expected behavior with the owner
Technical correlation establishes what happened. Authorization evidence establishes whether it was expected. Contact the owner of the affected resource or service, not only the person who received the alert.

- Describe the observed action, principal, resource, time and result without labeling it malicious.
- Ask whether the action was planned, approved and within the stated scope.
- Request the matching change, deployment, test or maintenance record.
- Ask whether the same automation, role or network path is expected to perform similar actions later.
- Record uncertainty if the owner cannot confirm the event or if the approval covers only part of the activity.
An owner’s “yes” is not sufficient by itself when the event involves sensitive data, privilege escalation or an unusual access path. Retain the supporting record and compare its scope with the actual event. Conversely, lack of an immediate owner response is not proof of maliciousness; follow the escalation path and preserve the case as unresolved.
6. Classify the finding using an explicit decision path
| Question | If yes | If no or unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Is there reliable evidence that the reported activity occurred? | Continue to authorization and impact analysis. | Investigate telemetry gaps, then classify as unsubstantiated only when the evidence record supports that conclusion. |
| Does the evidence show unauthorized or harmful behavior? | Classify as a malicious true positive and escalate. | Continue. |
| Was the activity authorized and within the approved scope? | Classify as a benign true positive when it genuinely matched suspicious behavior. | Continue. |
| Does the evidence show nonmalicious activity or a detector misinterpretation? | Classify as a false positive. | Keep the case open or escalate for additional evidence. |
Do not force a binary answer when telemetry or ownership is incomplete. An “unresolved” status with named follow-up actions is safer than closing a potentially serious event as benign. Include the confidence and the specific evidence that would change the classification.
7. Respond according to the classification
When the finding is malicious
Escalate through the incident-response process, preserve volatile evidence, contain only under approved procedures, and notify the stakeholders required by your policy. The investigation record should accompany the escalation so responders can see the original AI narrative, raw events, correlations and contradictions.
When it is a benign true positive
Close or reclassify it using the platform’s workflow, attach the authorization and explain why the suspicious pattern was legitimate. Consider improving detector context—such as tagging a sanctioned test account or documenting a deployment role—before changing a rule.
When it is a false positive
Document the nonmalicious explanation, raw evidence, owner confirmation, scope and analyst decision. Use the product’s closure or suppression control only after the evidence supports it. Microsoft documents suppression for future alerts when activity is not malicious; the exact control, duration and scope depend on the product.

When the result is uncertain
Keep the alert open, assign an owner and set a review time. Identify the missing log, approval or technical test needed to resolve it. Avoid broad suppression merely to reduce alert volume while uncertainty remains.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Tune detection without hiding future incidents
Tuning is a control change, not an administrative shortcut. Make it as narrow and reversible as possible.
- Scope an exception to the specific account, resource, principal, action, environment or approved test window.
- Prefer conditions that remain true only while the authorization is valid.
- Set an expiration or review date when the platform supports one.
- Keep the original detection available for materially different behavior, such as a new region, principal or destination.
- Record who approved the change, the evidence used, the expected reduction in noise and the rollback method.
- Test the rule against known malicious and benign examples before and after deployment.
If a platform cannot provide narrow scope or a reversible control, document that limitation and use workflow-based triage rather than suppressing the entire detection category.

10. Common investigation mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | Why it fails | Better practice |
|---|---|---|
| Accepting the AI verdict without checking logs | The model may have incomplete or mismatched context. | Validate each claim against primary events and record contradictions. |
| Looking only at the security product’s timeline | Derived severity and correlation may hide failed requests or identity changes. | Inspect raw resource, identity, network and workload logs. |
| Asking an owner a leading question | “This was approved, right?” can produce an unverified confirmation. | Describe the event neutrally and request the actual change or test record. |
| Ignoring time zones and ingestion delay | Events appear related when they are not, or the real event appears missing. | Normalize times and include ingestion latency in the timeline. |
| Equating unusual with malicious | New deployments, penetration tests and automation can be unusual but authorized. | Separate occurrence, authorization and impact. |
| Suppressing a broad rule immediately | Future attacks can disappear with the same pattern. | Use narrow, expiring and reversible tuning only after evidence supports it. |
| Closing without preserving rationale | Later analysts cannot audit or revisit the decision. | Attach evidence, owner confirmation, uncertainty and rollback details. |
11. Choosing or assessing an AI-assisted review tool
When comparing tools, evaluate capabilities rather than assuming that an AI label reflects independent accuracy. The relevant questions are:
| Capability | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Raw log access | Which cloud, identity, network, resource and workload logs can the tool read, and with what retention and permissions? |
| Context correlation | Can it join alerts with resource configuration, deployment history, owner data and related events? |
| Inspectable explanation | Does each claim point to an event, field or query that an analyst can inspect? |
| Human review and owner workflow | Can an analyst assign ownership, request confirmation, preserve responses and require approval before closure? |
| Suppression and tuning controls | Are exceptions narrow, time-bounded, auditable and reversible? |
AWS recommends automated correlation and enrichment as part of incident investigation. Microsoft documents a product-specific Attack Investigation Agent and warns that its output must be reviewed; its prerequisites and data access are tied to Defender APIs and should not be treated as universal features of every cloud platform. Neither source establishes a general AI accuracy percentage, false-positive reduction rate or vendor ranking.
12. Platform and evidence boundaries
The workflow applies across providers, but names, classifications, permissions, retention periods and closure controls vary. AWS guidance lists CloudTrail, VPC Flow Logs, Route 53 Resolver logs and infrastructure or application logs as candidate sources; another provider may use different services or terminology. Verify that the account, region and tenant are actually covered by the configured log source.
The AWS Security Incident Response User Guide version dated October 7, 2026 describes operational triage and response practices, not a general measurement of AI-assisted review accuracy. Microsoft’s documentation describes its own Defender capabilities and product controls. Use those details within their documented scope, and confirm current prerequisites and access settings in your environment before relying on a feature.
Final decision standard
Close an AI-assisted cloud finding as a false positive only when primary evidence shows that the reported activity was nonmalicious or the detector misinterpreted it, the resource owner or equivalent authority has supplied context where applicable, and the record preserves the reasoning and remaining uncertainty. If evidence shows unauthorized harm, escalate it; if evidence is incomplete, keep investigating. The reliable verdict comes from reproducible logs and context, not from the model’s confidence or the alert’s label.
