The key sizing question is whether the host only relays a stream that is already encoded for YouTube, or also transcodes it with FFmpeg. A relay avoids the video-encoding workload, but still needs a stable, sustained network path. Transcoding, recording, or serving HLS/DASH adds separate compute, storage, or delivery demands.
First decide what the server will do
NGINX RTMP is a streaming module, not a universal video-looping and encoding system. A typical path has a source or publisher produce the live stream, NGINX receive or relay it, and YouTube ingest the outgoing feed. The arut/nginx-rtmp-module project documents relay functions such as push and pull, as well as FFmpeg-based transcoding; its documentation treats transcoding as a separate workload.

Relay an already encoded stream
If the source already matches the intended YouTube codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe cadence, NGINX can relay it without encoding the video. In this design, CPU is not doing the video encoding. Network stability, the selected module and protocol build, process supervision, and reconnect behavior still matter.

If the source must be converted—for example, to change resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, or keyframe cadence—FFmpeg adds an encoding workload. Its compute demand depends on the codec, software or hardware encoder, preset and quality target, source complexity, output settings, and number of concurrent outputs. The reviewed documentation does not establish a universal CPU benchmark for those combinations.

Add recording or viewer delivery
Local recording and HLS/DASH packaging or delivery are additional roles, not consequences of simply relaying a feed to YouTube. Account separately for retention and storage if recording, and for segmenting and output traffic if packaging or serving viewers. The module documentation describes these capabilities but does not specify a hardware minimum, storage size, or audience capacity.

The following are YouTube Help encoder recommendations, not a specification for the NGINX machine. Use the row matching the output codec and frame rate; a bitrate quoted without those details can be misleading.

These settings describe the feed sent to YouTube. They do not establish the host’s CPU, RAM, disk, network-interface, or instance-family requirement. For network planning, allow headroom above the encoded video and audio rate for protocol overhead, bitrate variation, other traffic, and reconnects. YouTube Help recommends testing upload speed and the stream before going live, then monitoring stream health.

Choose capacity from the real path and workload rather than a generic “1080p server” label. The steps below are an engineering workflow based on the documented distinction between relay, transcoding, and YouTube ingest; they are not a published minimum specification.

- Define the output. Record the target codec, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio settings, and keyframe interval. Check whether the loop source is already encoded to those settings.
- Choose the stream path. For a compatible encoded source, test a relay-only path. If settings must change, include FFmpeg and the intended encoder settings in the design. Confirm which process actually reads or loops the media file; do not assume the NGINX RTMP module itself is the file-looping producer.
- Verify the NGINX RTMP build. Stock NGINX distributions do not all include RTMP support. The official NGINX RTMP page gives dynamic-module installation instructions for NGINX Plus packages; the project README also documents building its module with NGINX. Check the instructions and compatibility for your exact NGINX distribution, operating system, module build, and RTMPS/TLS path rather than applying the NGINX Plus package route to every installation.
- Configure YouTube ingest. Use the RTMPS ingest option where supported by your chosen path, and use the stream address and key provided by YouTube Studio or the platform’s stream setup. Keep the key private; do not paste it into public configuration examples, screenshots, or logs.
- Measure a representative feed. Run the actual source through the intended route to YouTube. Observe host CPU and memory, sustained network throughput, dropped frames, stream health, and disconnect/reconnect behavior. If transcoding, test the exact FFmpeg encoder and output settings, including the expected number of concurrent streams.
- Test added roles separately. If recording, estimate storage from the chosen recording bitrate and retention period. If producing HLS/DASH or serving viewers, measure that packaging and delivery workload and traffic separately from the YouTube push.
- Test recovery and monitor. Confirm what happens when the source, relay process, network route, or YouTube connection drops, and how each component is restarted or republished. YouTube recommends pre-stream testing and monitoring stream health; its guidance does not prescribe a 24/7 soak-test duration.
Common sizing and setup problems
- CPU is unexpectedly high: check whether FFmpeg is encoding, whether multiple outputs are active, and whether the encoder settings or preset are more demanding than expected. A relay-only design avoids video encoding at the relay, but does not eliminate other host work.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: compare the actual codec, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings with the applicable YouTube recommendations. Check sustained throughput along the full route, not just a brief connection-speed result.
- The stream never reaches YouTube: verify that the configured RTMP module is present and compatible with the installed NGINX build, that the selected ingest protocol is supported end to end, and that the address and stream key came from the current YouTube setup.
- The feed disconnects and does not return: inspect source, relay, and network logs separately, then test the configured process supervision and republishing behavior. Automatic recovery is an operational design choice; a relay alone does not prove recovery is configured.
- Adding workers does not solve the bottleneck: the module documents automatic stream pushing between NGINX workers for multi-worker live streaming, but that behavior is not evidence that more workers solve encoding load or upstream bandwidth limits.
