Yes, a Raspberry Pi can be part of an NGINX RTMP setup that sends a live stream to YouTube, but the workload determines whether the Pi is a sensible host. Relaying an already encoded feed is different from capturing and encoding video on the Pi. Neither NGINX RTMP nor a successful first connection guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 operation: the complete chain needs testing, monitoring and a recovery plan.
Understand the streaming chain before installing anything
NGINX RTMP is a streaming component, not a camera application or a general-purpose video encoder. Before choosing a Pi or configuring NGINX, decide what creates the video and where it is encoded.

- Relay an encoded feed: another encoder creates the video and sends it to the Pi. The Pi’s job is to receive and forward that stream. This avoids making the Pi perform the same work as a local video encoder, although its network, storage, software and power still matter.
- Capture and encode on the Pi: the Pi also has to acquire the source, encode video and provide audio. Resolution, frame rate, codec and sustained processing load now matter directly. Do not assume a model can maintain a particular profile without testing that exact setup.
Write down the input protocol, video codec, resolution, frame rate, audio path and destination. Confirm that each part of the chain agrees: the source must reach the Pi, the RTMP module must accept that input, and the outbound stream must meet YouTube’s ingest requirements.

Choose and document the source
Decide whether the Pi relays an already encoded stream or also captures and encodes it. Identify the source device or application and record its protocol, codecs, resolution, frame rate and audio format. Test with the actual content and source hardware, not just an idle connection.

Install a compatible RTMP module
Use a module compatible with the NGINX build and Raspberry Pi OS release actually installed. NGINX’s published dynamic-module documentation is scoped to NGINX Plus; it is not a universal installation recipe for the community NGINX package on every Pi OS image. Check the package and module instructions for your specific OS and NGINX build before installing or changing the server.
Make configuration changes only after confirming the module’s syntax and where that installation loads its configuration. Validate the configuration with the test command provided by that NGINX package before reloading the service. A configuration test can catch syntax or module-loading errors, but it does not confirm that YouTube will accept the feed.

Get the current YouTube destination and key
In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the current ingest URL and stream key for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository or include it in screenshots. Use RTMPS if the selected encoder and module path support it; YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP protected with TLS/SSL.

Match the encoder output to YouTube
YouTube’s current guidance calls for CBR, a supported video codec and an appropriate audio codec. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Use settings supported by both the sending encoder and the chosen ingest path; the Pi’s ability to relay a codec does not prove that it can encode that codec at a given profile.
The following are YouTube Help’s published H.264 bitrate ranges, accessed in 2026. They are encoder guidance, not measurements of Raspberry Pi performance:
Output profile Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate 720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps 1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps Choose a profile your source and encoder can sustain, then compare its bitrate with measured, stable upload capacity. A speed test at one moment is not proof that the connection will hold that rate continuously.

Vilros Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Basic Starter Kit with Fan-Cooled Heavy-Duty Aluminum Alloy Case- KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
- SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
- SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
- IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
- VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.

Test the complete path before scheduling a long run
Start a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast, then check YouTube’s stream-health status and messages. Include audio and representative motion in the test; a static image can hide encoding or bandwidth problems. Verify that the audio reaches YouTube, that the picture is moving as expected and that the stream remains healthy under the intended output settings.

Design for failure, not just for a successful start
A stream that connects once is not yet a 24/7 system. The operational target requires tests under the actual load, visibility into failures and a way to recover the feed. NGINX alone does not manage every part of the YouTube broadcast lifecycle.
- Watch both ends: check the local source and encoder, the NGINX process, network connectivity and YouTube’s stream status. YouTube’s API exposes whether a stream is active or inactive and its health status; use those signals alongside local checks where your implementation supports them.
- Plan recovery: decide what should restart after a process or network failure, how you will know it happened and how to confirm that YouTube is receiving video again. A service manager can supervise a process, but restarting a process does not itself verify that the source, audio, connection and broadcast are healthy.
- Keep logs and alerts: retain enough local logs to diagnose disconnects and configure a practical check or alert for source, encoder, host and network failures. Without an alert, an unattended failure may simply remain unnoticed.
- Exercise the recovery path: during a controlled test, verify what happens after the source stops, the encoder exits or the connection drops. Do not assume reconnection behavior without observing it in your own setup.
A third-party example of a small Linux streaming host uses FFmpeg supervised by systemd. That illustrates one way to arrange process supervision; it is not a benchmark of NGINX RTMP or evidence that a particular Pi setup will stay live without interruption.

What limits a Raspberry Pi build?
Encoding load and model choice
The workload is the key distinction. Forwarding an already encoded feed and encoding video locally are not interchangeable jobs. The reviewed sources do not establish a maximum resolution for a particular Pi/NGINX configuration or a controlled comparison across Pi models for this complete streaming chain. Choose a board based on the actual input, output and sustained workload, then test that exact combination rather than relying on a model name as a performance guarantee.
Heat and sustained processing
Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation gives 85°C as the thermal limit across models and explains that board frequencies are reduced as temperatures rise. In a 2023 Pi 5 stress test, sustained heavy CPU load without cooling went above that limit; in the article’s Active Cooler test setup, temperatures stabilized around 60°C with a reported maximum of 62–63°C. Those figures describe the Raspberry Pi article’s test conditions, not a streaming benchmark. They show why you should measure temperatures under your own workload—not that every streaming setup needs a fan.

Raspberry Pi recommends a 5V/5A supply for Raspberry Pi 5. Requirements vary by board and connected peripherals, so choose the supply for the actual model and load. An inadequate or poor-quality supply can cause low-voltage warnings and unpredictable behavior; include the draw of capture devices, storage and other connected hardware in your planning.

Upload stability and the full chain
Compare the target bitrate with measured upload capacity and stability, and leave practical headroom for variation. A reliable local network does not prevent failures at the source, on the route to YouTube or in the host itself. Test and monitor the whole route, not only the Pi’s local process.
Copyright and reused material still matter
A technically healthy stream is not automatically authorized or eligible for every YouTube feature. Use video and audio you own or have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content rules for your channel and intended use. Long duration, looping or a change in broadcast method does not by itself establish rights to the material or make reused content original.
When a cloud service is a better fit
