NFTs Should Be Green Too: What Sustainability Really Means

NFTs have no single environmental footprint. Ethereum’s proof-of-stake transition cut its network-level estimates dramatically, but those figures do not reveal a universal carbon cost for an individual NFT.

NFTs do not have one fixed environmental footprint: the blockchain and the way its activity is measured matter. Ethereum’s move from proof of work to proof of stake sharply reduced its network-level electricity use and estimated emissions, but that does not establish a universal carbon cost for each NFT. Creators, marketplaces, and collectors should ask what a sustainability claim measures—and disclose its limits.

Are NFTs bad for the environment?

Not automatically, and not all to the same degree. An NFT is a token recorded on a blockchain; its environmental impact depends on the network and the activity involved in creating, transferring, and supporting it. The word “NFT” alone is not enough to determine its footprint. A 2022 announcement accompanying a Linux Foundation Research report said about 80 percent of NFTs were transacted via Ethereum, but that is a historical figure, not a current market-share estimate. Ethereum was then transitioning to proof of stake. Hyperledger Foundation’s April 2022 announcement captures the concern as it stood then, not Ethereum’s present consensus mechanism.

What changed when Ethereum moved to proof of stake?

Ethereum now uses proof of stake rather than proof of work. Ethereum.org reports a current network estimate of 2,601 MWh of electricity and 870 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions per year. Its page, last updated July 28, 2026, attributes those estimates to the Crypto Carbon Ratings Institute (CCRI). These are estimates for the Ethereum network, not the footprint of one NFT. Ethereum.org’s energy-consumption page describes the figures and their basis.

Comparing annualized network estimates before and after the Merge, Ethereum.org reports that electricity consumption fell by more than 99.988%, while estimated carbon footprint fell by approximately 99.992%—from 11,016,000 to 870 tonnes of CO2e. Those are network-level comparisons with Ethereum’s prior proof-of-work system; they should not be recast as a percentage reduction for every NFT or transaction.

CCRI’s estimate is based on a bottom-up study of node electricity use across hardware and client configurations. The associated emissions estimate applies regional carbon-intensity factors, and the result can change as nodes join or leave. Ethereum.org says its figures use publicly available data and are not an official statement or promise from ethereum.org or the Ethereum Foundation.

Why energy use is not the same as carbon emissions

Electricity consumption and greenhouse-gas emissions are related but distinct measures. The electricity used by a network does not by itself determine its emissions: where nodes operate and the electricity sources available in those locations affect the carbon estimate. Cambridge’s methodology uses node geography and regional electricity mixes and notes that exact emissions are difficult to calculate, so it considers scenario ranges. Its current index covers electricity consumption of identified nodes; it is not a full life-cycle assessment. See Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance’s Ethereum GHG methodology and its 2023 explanation of Ethereum’s climate impact.

Why there is no reliable universal carbon number per NFT

The current sources cited here do not establish a universal, current life-cycle emissions figure for an individual NFT. Network-level energy cannot simply be divided by the number of transactions and presented as the energy used by each one. Ethereum.org explains that the energy required for block proposal and validation is not directly proportional to the number of transactions in a block; results also depend on throughput definitions and whether Layer 2 activity is counted.

A 2023 peer-reviewed article’s abstract reports a modeled yearly NFT greenhouse-gas estimate reaching up to 18% of the proof-of-work peak. That is a model-specific upper estimate, not a current measured figure for the NFT sector and not the footprint of an individual token. The study is indexed at PubMed.

How to assess an NFT sustainability claim

Ask what the claim actually covers before treating “green” as a settled property of an NFT. A useful disclosure should identify:

  • The blockchain and activity: which network is involved and whether the estimate covers minting, transfers, other network use, or some combination.
  • The measurement boundary: whether it counts electricity-related emissions only or attempts a broader life-cycle assessment.
  • The method and date: the data, assumptions, geographic electricity mix, and measurement period behind the estimate.
  • Layer 2 coverage: whether activity on Layer 2 networks is included, and how it is attributed.
  • What the number represents: a network total, a modeled estimate, or an allocation to a particular activity—not an unsupported per-NFT figure.

For a network comparison, use like-for-like methods and boundaries. The sources cited here do not provide a current, common-boundary comparison across major NFT-capable blockchains, so they cannot support a defensible winner or ranking.

What “green NFTs” should mean in practice

There is no single label that makes an NFT environmentally sustainable. A more useful standard is transparent accounting: name the network, explain the activity and system boundary, identify the emissions method and its date, and avoid turning a network estimate into a token-level promise. That lets buyers and creators compare claims honestly while recognizing that estimates depend on changing network conditions and imperfect data.
