Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Elon Musk made that prediction on April 8, 2024, but as a conditional forecast—not a report that artificial general intelligence (AGI) had arrived. He said that if AGI meant being “smarter than the smartest human,” he thought it was “probably next year, within two years.” That put his estimate around 2025–2026. It is a dated prediction, and the benchmark evidence available now does not establish that AI has met his broad test.
What did Elon Musk say, and when?
During an X Spaces interview on April 8, 2024, Norges Bank Investment Management CEO Nicolai Tangen asked Musk about the timeline for AGI. Musk replied: “If you define AGI (artificial general intelligence) as smarter than the smartest human, I think it’s probably next year, within two years.” Reuters’ contemporaneous account, published that day, paraphrased his estimate as probably by the following year or by 2026.

The wording matters: Musk made the forecast depend on a particular definition of AGI. He did not say AI was already smarter than the smartest human, and the statement should not be treated as a firm deadline or a measurement of current capability.

The phrase describes an exceptionally broad threshold, but it does not specify a test. It could mean outperforming the best person in one domain, or demonstrating superior performance across many kinds of work and reasoning. Those are very different claims. The benchmark reports discussed below measure particular tasks; none evaluates whether one system is broadly smarter than the most capable human across the full scope implied by Musk’s phrase.

The archived interview transcript also preserves a distinction that is easy to miss in summaries. Musk discussed AI surpassing any one human around the end of the following year, then described surpassing “the machine, augmented human collective”—people working with computers—as a separate, further-out threshold. The individual-human forecast and the collective-capability claim should not be combined into one timeline.
What evidence can—and can’t—say about AI capability now?
Stanford HAI’s 2026 AI Index technical-performance report documents strong gains on specific benchmarks in 2025. For example, computer-use agents achieved about 66.3% success on OSWorld, a structured computer-use benchmark. That still means roughly one in three attempts failed. The report also contrasts strong results in simulated robotics settings with poor success on many real household tasks.
Rank #2
These results show substantial progress in defined settings, not a universal intelligence ranking. A benchmark score depends on the task, the comparison group, the tools available, and how success is measured. Strong performance on one test does not demonstrate broad superiority over the most capable human.

What do METR’s task-horizon measurements show?
METR estimates the human-calibrated duration of tasks an AI agent is predicted to complete at a specified success rate. Its task-horizon explanation, last updated May 8, 2026, stresses that this is a measure of task difficulty—not simply how long an agent can operate autonomously.
METR’s January 29, 2026 Time Horizon 1.1 release describes a 228-task suite spanning estimated human completion times from one second to 30 hours. The release notes that confidence intervals remain wide. A rising horizon is relevant evidence about agents’ ability to complete some software tasks, but it is neither a measure of uninterrupted operating time nor a direct test of AGI as Musk defined it.

Not by the evaluations cited here. The evidence supports rapid progress and strong results on selected tests, alongside meaningful failures in other settings. It does not supply a validated, directly comparable score for being “smarter than the smartest human” across a broad range of capabilities. Without an operational definition and a test covering that breadth, these benchmarks cannot settle whether Musk’s forecast has come true.
