What do LF Broadband and WBA each contribute?
LF Broadband: open broadband projects
LF Broadband is an independent fund established under the Linux Foundation in 2023. The Linux Foundation’s July 25, 2024 formation announcement identifies SEBA and VOLTHA among its supported projects. SEBA is a reference design for open broadband networks; VOLTHA is an open-source project for virtualizing multi-vendor Passive Optical Network (PON) systems. LF Broadband’s project overview describes its project portfolio.
WBA: wireless-industry programs and interoperability
WBA describes its mission as enabling seamless, interoperable Wi-Fi experiences. Its program overview lists work spanning NextGen Wi-Fi, 5G, IoT, testing and interoperability, and roaming. WBA also uses member-led work groups to address standards and technical issues.

How could open source and Wi-Fi standards work together?
Open-source broadband projects and industry standards activity address different parts of a network challenge. A project such as VOLTHA focuses on software for managing and virtualizing multi-vendor PON systems; WBA’s programs address wireless interoperability and roaming. The partnership’s stated aim is to coordinate those kinds of efforts, including work related to operator-managed Wi-Fi and cross-industry QoS/QoE strategies.
