NFS errors in an air-gapped Kubernetes cluster do not, by themselves, prove that NFS is the cause or that block storage is the fix. First match the workload’s storage contract to the observed failure: check NFS protocol and mount/export configuration, identity mapping, network and server health, application behavior, and durable-write guarantees. Consider a CSI-backed block volume only after verifying that its filesystem or raw-device mode fits the application and that the driver can be deployed and supported offline in your Kubernetes environment.
Does an NFS I/O error mean you need block storage?
No. An I/O error is a symptom, not a diagnosis. NFS client caching, protocol behavior, server health, network interruption, export permissions, UID/GID mapping, mount settings, application access patterns, and durability behavior can all matter. The Linux nfs(5) manual discusses client caching and notes that NFS was not designed as a true cluster filesystem; that is not the same as saying every NFS implementation fails POSIX file operations.

Start with the application’s documented storage requirements and the exact failure signature. Look for correlated kernel and application logs, server-side events, and network disruptions around the time of failed reads or writes. Avoid changing mount flags as a generic cure: a setting that affects caching or write behavior must be evaluated against both the deployed NFS client/server and the workload.

NFS provisioning is external
Kubernetes does not include an internal NFS provisioner for StorageClasses; NFS provisioning requires an external provisioner. The Kubernetes NFS CSI driver requires an already configured NFSv3 or NFSv4 server and supports static and dynamic provisioning. Its example uses nfsvers=4.1, but that is an example, not a universal recommendation. Check the driver’s compatibility information for the target Kubernetes version and pin an appropriate driver release rather than depending on a moving development branch. See the Kubernetes documentation on StorageClasses.

Filesystem and block are different volume modes
Kubernetes PersistentVolumes distinguish Filesystem from Block volume mode. These describe how a volume is presented, not whether its storage backend satisfies an application’s locking, consistency, or durability requirements. A StorageClass’s raw-block support depends on its CSI driver; Kubernetes does not infer that support. Consult the PersistentVolumes documentation and the CSI raw block volume guide.
Block storage delivers a device. If software expects POSIX file operations, it generally still needs a suitable filesystem created and mounted over that device. The combination of filesystem, CSI driver, backend, and application must be validated; selecting block mode alone does not ensure correct semantics.

Access modes do not settle application semantics
Kubernetes documents that NFS can support multiple read-write clients, while a particular PersistentVolume may nevertheless be exported read-only. Access modes and volume modes are separate API properties. Neither proves that an application’s cross-client locking, visibility, or durability expectations are met.

Example: Elasticsearch data paths
Elasticsearch is one example, not a universal proxy for Kubernetes workloads. Elastic says its path.data content must persist across restarts, and that its filesystem must act as if backed by local disk. Elastic also allows properly configured remote block devices and remote filesystems, including NFS, if the remote storage behaves no differently from local storage. Read the current Elasticsearch node settings for the application’s own requirements; this guidance does not support a blanket claim that Elasticsearch can never use NFS.
Durability is especially important when diagnosing corruption. Elastic’s corruption troubleshooting guidance explains that if a file is needed to recover an index after restart, the storage system must previously have confirmed that it was durably synced. On Linux, that means fsync() returned successfully. Elastic lists possible causes beyond the storage protocol, including filesystem, kernel, firmware, durability configuration, hardware, and third-party software. It suggests integrity-focused tools such as fio or stress-ng as part of diagnosis; their mention is not evidence that a test has been run or that it reproduces a particular failure.

Do not confuse data storage with shared snapshot storage
Elasticsearch’s shared snapshot-repository requirements address a different use case from its data path. Elastic’s shared filesystem repository guidance covers cross-node visibility of completed shared operations and consistent numeric UID/GID mapping for NFS in that context. These requirements should not be transferred wholesale to every Elasticsearch data path or to unrelated workloads.

Diagnose the failure before changing the backend
- Define the failure precisely. Record which pod, node, volume, operation, and time are involved; distinguish stalled I/O, permission errors, timeouts, read-only remounts, and application-level corruption.
- Check the NFS path end to end. Verify the negotiated protocol version, client and server health, export permissions, read/write status, mount options, network reachability, and UID/GID mapping. Compare logs from the worker, NFS server, and application for the same time window.
- Compare observed behavior with the application contract. Check whether concurrent access, locking, file visibility, persistence, and successful durable writes behave as the software requires.
- Reproduce safely under representative conditions. Use an integrity-focused test plan appropriate to the workload and storage environment. Do not run destructive tests against production data or infer results from a tool’s availability.
- Evaluate alternatives against the same workload. Compare candidate NFS and block options under representative reads and writes, including latency, IOPS, failure recovery, rescheduling, and required shared access.
What to verify before adopting block storage in an air gap
Air-gapped deployment adds constraints that storage performance tests alone cannot answer. The exact Kubernetes distribution and version, node operating systems, available disks or SAN/iSCSI/Ceph infrastructure, workload, and existing CSI drivers are not specified here, so no particular block product or offline installation path can be recommended.

- Confirm the CSI driver supports the target Kubernetes version, backend, volume modes, and required access patterns.
- Verify all driver images, manifests or Helm charts, dependencies, and required artifacts can be mirrored into the isolated registry and installed without external access.
- Establish how driver upgrades, security fixes, dependencies, and support will be handled offline.
- Check whether the workload needs single-node or shared access, and what happens to data when a pod is rescheduled or a node is lost.
- Include failure and recovery behavior, operational burden, and total cost alongside latency and IOPS in the comparison.
Local PersistentVolumes may be an option only when workload placement and node-loss behavior are acceptable. They are not a drop-in replacement for shared storage.
How to decide between keeping NFS and moving to block
| Decision question | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Does NFS meet the workload contract? | Protocol/client behavior, mount and export configuration, identity mapping, concurrency needs, and durable-write behavior. |
| Would block mode fit the application? | CSI driver support for raw block or formatted filesystem delivery, compatible filesystem and application behavior, and any required sharing or locking. |
| Can it run in this air gap? | Distribution and Kubernetes version compatibility, mirrored images and dependencies, offline installation, upgrades, and support path. |
| Is the alternative better under real conditions? | Representative workload performance, failure and recovery behavior, pod placement needs, operational burden, and total cost. |
Without those cluster-specific details, the sound conclusion is conditional: investigate the actual NFS failure and workload contract first; move to a compatible CSI-backed block design only if testing and deployment checks show it meets the workload’s requirements better.
