I made my Android phone feel less interruptive by changing a few notification and focus settings—not by shutting off every alert or system feature. The most useful place to start is with the apps that actually break your attention: quiet or disable those alerts, then reassess. Android’s controls vary by phone, so the exact labels may differ.
Start with the interruptions you actually notice
Before changing settings, pay attention to which alerts pull you away and which ones you still need. A delivery update, a message from family, and a promotional alert may not deserve the same treatment. I found it more practical to adjust a few noisy apps first and see whether the phone felt calmer, rather than silencing everything at once.

Quiet or turn off notifications from specific apps
On many Android phones, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, choose an app, then turn off all its notifications or disable only selected categories where those controls are available. Google Android Help explains: “You can turn off all notifications for a listed app or choose from specific categories.” Category controls are useful when an app mixes essential updates with alerts you do not want.
You can also touch and hold an incoming notification and open its settings to adjust that app’s alerts. The route and labels vary by device and Android version. If the path does not match your screen, search Settings for “notifications” or check the phone maker’s instructions.

Keep low-priority alerts without the interruption
For alerts you may want to check later, choose Silent instead of turning them off, where supported. Silent notifications remain in the notification shade but do not make a sound or vibrate. You can also turn off notification dots or limit what appears on the lock screen. Before doing so, consider whether you use those visual cues to catch important updates.
Use Focus mode for a scheduled break
For a period when you want fewer distractions, open Settings > Digital Wellbeing & parental controls > Focus mode, select the apps to pause, and turn Focus mode on. On supported phones, you can also schedule it. While it is active, selected apps are paused and their notifications are suppressed; a temporary break option lets you use a paused app when needed.

Google Android Help describes the effect this way: “When Focus mode is on, you can’t use these apps and won’t get notifications from them.” Digital Wellbeing also includes app timers and Bedtime mode on supported phones. Availability and exact menu names depend on the device.
Review privacy permissions separately
Reducing interruptions and limiting app access are different goals. If your concern is privacy, review permissions for individual apps in Settings and change only what you are comfortable changing. Android provides controls for access to location, microphone, and camera; location options may include choosing precise or approximate access and limiting when an app can use it, depending on the phone and Android version.

Changing a permission can affect how an app works—for example, a navigation app may need location access to provide directions. Android also documents automatic permission resets for some apps left unused. Treat permission changes as a privacy choice, not a shortcut for silencing alerts.

These are built-in Android controls, but their availability and presentation can vary by manufacturer, device, and software version. If a setting is missing, use Settings search or consult your phone maker’s support instructions rather than assuming your phone supports the same route.
