There is no single free, open-source app that replaces all of Adobe Creative Cloud. The practical alternative is a toolkit: GIMP for image manipulation, Krita for painting, Inkscape for vector design, darktable for RAW photography, Scribus for page layout, Kdenlive for open-source video editing, Audacity for audio, and Blender for 3D and some motion work. DaVinci Resolve is another substantial free video option, but it is proprietary—not open source.
Which Creative Cloud alternative fits each workflow?
Choose by the work you need to do, rather than looking for a one-to-one replacement suite. These tools have different strengths, and moving between them does not guarantee that Adobe-native projects will remain fully editable.

| Adobe workflow | Alternative to try | Best fit and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Photoshop: raster editing, compositing and retouching | GIMP | Photo manipulation, artwork, graphic-design elements and scripting. It is not a promise of Photoshop feature parity or an identical workflow. |
| Photoshop for painting and illustration | Krita | Digital painting and illustration, with brush types, layers, drawing assistants, stabilizers and animation tools. It is better viewed as a painting tool than as a general-purpose Photoshop clone. |
| Illustrator: vector graphics | Inkscape | Vector illustration, logos, typography, cartoons and diagrams; SVG is its main format. Import and export support for formats such as AI and PDF does not establish complete Illustrator-file compatibility. |
| Lightroom: cataloging and RAW development | darktable | Manages digital negatives in a database and develops RAW images non-destructively. Check support for your camera and whether its library workflow suits you. |
| InDesign: page layout and publishing | Scribus | A candidate for page-layout work. Current-version details and .indd import capabilities are not established here; test your own documents and print handoff. |
| Premiere Pro: video editing | Kdenlive; DaVinci Resolve if proprietary software is acceptable | Kdenlive is the open-source route identified for editing. Resolve offers a free option but is proprietary, so it does not meet a strict open-source requirement. |
| Audition: recording and audio editing | Audacity | Recording and editing, major audio formats, cross-platform operation and plugins. It should not be assumed to match every Audition production or multitrack workflow. |
| After Effects, 3D and motion work | Blender; investigate Natron for compositing | Blender is identified for 3D and some animation or motion workflows. Treat Natron as a lead to investigate, not a confirmed like-for-like substitute. |
Which image tool should you choose: GIMP or Krita?
Choose GIMP for image manipulation
GIMP is the stronger starting point when the job centers on editing photographs, compositing, retouching, or combining raster artwork with graphic-design elements. Its project describes photo manipulation, artwork, scripting and cross-platform use. If a project depends on specific Photoshop features, actions, or handoff conventions, check those requirements directly rather than assuming they transfer.
Choose Krita for painting and illustration
Krita is the more natural choice for drawing and painting. Its listed tools include multiple brush types, layers, drawing assistants, stabilizers and animation features. A pressure-sensitive drawing tablet can be useful for this work, but it is optional hardware, not a software requirement.

What should photographers and vector designers check before switching?
For RAW photography, test darktable with your own camera and catalog
darktable combines photo-library management with non-destructive RAW development, making it a closer workflow match for Lightroom than a general raster editor. Before migrating a working library, confirm that your camera is supported and that the way darktable organizes and develops images fits your routine.
For vector work, treat Inkscape as SVG-centered
Inkscape is built around vector graphics, with SVG as its main format. Its ability to import or export formats including AI and PDF can help with exchange, but it does not prove that every Illustrator document will open with its layers, effects, fonts, or editability intact. Test representative files, not just a simple logo.
What are the video, layout and audio options?
For video, decide whether open-source licensing is essential
Kdenlive is the open-source editing path in this group. DaVinci Resolve is a separate option if the free offering matters more than open-source licensing: Blackmagic’s product page showed Resolve 21 on October 4, 2026, with separate Edit, Color, Fusion, Fairlight and Studio areas. A free option and open-source software are not the same thing.
For page layout, validate Scribus with a real print job
Scribus is a candidate for InDesign-style page-layout and publishing work, but current-version specifics and .indd import behavior are not established here. For a serious print workflow, trial a representative document and verify the PDF and prepress handoff with the printer before moving an active project.
For recording and editing audio, start with Audacity
Audacity supports recording and editing, major audio formats, plugins and cross-platform use. Those capabilities make it useful for many audio tasks, but do not establish parity with every Audition multitrack or production workflow.

Make the decision around the files, collaborators and services your work actually depends on. A successful install is not the same as a successful migration.
Rank #3
- File handoff: Open representative working files, make edits, then export and reopen them in the format your clients or collaborators need. Check that important text, layers, effects and layout survive.
- Team collaboration: Test round-tripping with collaborators before moving active shared projects. The available evidence does not establish seamless exchange of all Adobe-native files across these alternatives.
- Platform availability: Confirm that each app supports the operating systems your team uses. GIMP and Audacity are described as cross-platform, but that should not be generalized to every tool in the list.
- Cloud-dependent work: Identify any reliance on Adobe cloud services, fonts, stock assets or shared project formats. Replacing an editing app alone may not replace those dependencies.
- Specialized workflows: Photographers should test camera support and catalog migration; print designers should verify PDF and prepress output; editors should check the features and file handoff needed by their collaborators.
- Learning curve: Expect to learn separate tools rather than transfer every habit from one integrated suite. Try the most important task first, using a copy of an existing project.
Which apps are current, and what is uncertain?
As displayed on October 4, 2026, GIMP’s homepage showed version 3.2.6, released September 10, 2026, and Krita’s homepage showed releases 5.3.4 and 6.0.4, dated September 15, 2026. Inkscape’s official search result reported version 1.4.2, released May 12, 2025; that is older version evidence, so check its download page for the current release before installing. These are page-displayed release details, not a guarantee that the same versions remain current later.
