Debug an unexpected redirect, an API 401, and a Sales-Pipeline foreign-key failure as three separate problems until the evidence connects them. Trace the browser navigation through Next.js, the request and status through NestJS, and the relation write through the database. A redirect is not proof that the API is protected, a NestJS guard returning false normally produces 403 rather than 401, and a foreign-key error means the referenced record or relation definition needs investigation—not automatically a weaker constraint.
First, establish which code and runtime behavior you are debugging
The title does not identify the router mode, framework versions, authentication library, database provider, ORM, or exact failing operation. Start by checking the package manifest and lockfile, route structure, auth/session implementation, ORM schema, migrations, runtime logs, and database connection used by the failing request. Treat framework-specific examples below as conditional, not as a diagnosis of your repository.

- Record the requested page URL, the redirect destination, and where the redirect decision runs.
- Capture the API request, including its method, path, cookies or authorization header, response status, and response body.
- Capture the database error code and message, the relation field being written, and the environment and transaction involved.
These observations let you tell whether one failure causes another or whether the navigation, API status, and database write are independent symptoms.
Trace the Next.js navigation and session state
Find the redirect decision
Follow the requested URL to the exact code that redirects: it may be a Server Component, Route Handler, client component, or—depending on the project version and setup—Proxy. Record the route matcher, conditions, and destination. Check whether the destination matches the same redirect rule; a protected route that redirects to another protected route can create a loop.

At that decision point, determine which session or cookie state is actually available and whether it matches the state expected by the code. Compare the browser’s stored credentials with what the server-side code reads. A client-visible session, a server session, and an authorization decision are distinct concerns; do not assume they are interchangeable.
Keep navigation filtering separate from authorization
Next.js describes Proxy as useful for centralizing redirect logic and pre-filtering unauthorized users, but that is not a substitute for checking identity and permissions where protected data is accessed. Its authentication guide separates authentication, session management, and authorization, and says that “The majority of security checks should be performed as close as possible to your data source.” See the Next.js authentication guide.

Confirm the project’s Next.js version, router mode, and auth setup before adopting a particular API or moving checks. A page redirect can improve navigation, but the API and data-access path still need their own appropriate enforcement.

Follow the request to the NestJS status response
Capture what the browser actually sends
Use the browser network panel or equivalent logs to record the outgoing method, URL, cookies or Authorization header, and response. Then trace the request to the NestJS route, authentication logic, guard result, and any exception filter that may transform the response. Check whether credentials are absent, expired, malformed, or not accepted by the backend before changing the frontend’s response handling.

Distinguish unauthenticated from forbidden
NestJS documents that when a guard returns false, the framework throws a ForbiddenException, which ordinarily results in 403. For a request that is unauthenticated and should receive 401, throw UnauthorizedException explicitly rather than returning false. Verify the route’s actual guard and any exception filter, because application-specific handling can alter the response. See NestJS Guards.
In practical terms, first establish whether the caller has a valid identity; then establish whether that identity may perform the requested action. Do not treat a 401 and 403 as interchangeable labels, and do not change frontend routing until you know which status the backend actually returns and why.

Account for middleware lifecycle
NestJS middleware runs before a route handler is selected. Exceptions thrown there require global exception handling; route-aware authorization decisions generally fit guards, which have access to the execution context and route metadata. If the auth check is in middleware, inspect the global exception filters as well as the middleware itself. See NestJS Middleware.
Use Next.js unauthorized handling cautiously
Next.js documents an unauthorized() function for rendering a 401 error page in Server Components, Server Functions, and Route Handlers. The API reference, last updated February 27, 2026, labels it experimental, requires enabling experimental.authInterrupts, and does not recommend it for production. It is not a stable, automatic replacement for fixing a NestJS response or a redirect loop. Check the Next.js unauthorized() API reference and the project’s installed version before considering it.

Trace the Sales-Pipeline foreign-key failure
Identify the actual relation and constraint
Before changing schema or delete behavior, establish the ORM, database provider, relation mode, model and relation fields, migration state, and exact error code and message. For a relational foreign key, compare the scalar value being written with the referenced row’s primary key in the same database environment and transaction. Check whether the row exists, whether creation order is correct, and whether the ID is stale or comes from a different environment.
If the project uses Prisma with the foreignKeys relation mode, the database enforces the constraint: the referenced row must exist. Prisma’s v6 documentation explains that foreign keys enforce referential integrity; see Prisma relation mode and Prisma referential actions. Do not assume this is the project’s behavior if it uses another ORM, provider, or relation mode.
Check Prisma schema and action semantics only if applicable
If the repository uses Prisma, inspect the relation’s @relation(fields: ..., references: ...), confirm the foreign-key field’s required or optional status is consistent with the relation, and review explicit onDelete and onUpdate actions alongside applied migrations. Prisma ORM v6 documents default onDelete behavior of Restrict for required relations and SetNull for optional relations, and default onUpdate behavior of Cascade; provider support and behavior can vary. Its documentation identifies P2003 for a foreign-key constraint failure in the described referential-actions context. Check the installed version and connector before relying on a default or mapping an error code to your incident.
Choose relation actions according to the meaning of the data, not as a way to silence an error. A required relationship, an optional relationship, and a database-enforced versus client-emulated relation each have different integrity consequences. For example, cascading deletion is only appropriate when deleting the referenced record should also delete dependent data; setting a relation to null only makes sense when the relationship is genuinely optional.
Use an evidence-led order of operations
- Reproduce and record the navigation: note the initial URL, redirect source and destination, route type, matcher, and session state visible at the decision point.
- Inspect the API request: capture its credentials, backend route, guard or middleware path, status, and response body; check exception-filter behavior.
- Inspect the failing write: identify the exact relation value, referenced row, transaction, database, ORM mode, schema, migration, and error.
- Test each layer independently: verify page navigation without assuming API authorization, call the API with known valid and invalid credentials, and verify the referenced row in the database used by the write.
- Change only the layer supported by the evidence: correct a redirect condition, authentication response, stale or missing relation ID, or schema action as appropriate; then retest the full request path.
This order prevents a cosmetic redirect change from hiding an API authorization defect, and prevents weakening a database constraint when the actual fault is a missing or incorrect referenced ID.
