Microsoft says typing learned by the keyboard stays on your device by default. Turning on Backup & Sync sends your personal language-model data to Microsoft for storage and use across devices; product-improvement sharing is a separate opt-in. These statements come from Microsoft support documentation, not an independent technical audit.
What SwiftKey learns—and when it leaves your device
Microsoft says SwiftKey adapts to your writing style and keystroke patterns. Its support material states that, by default, what the keyboard learns about your typing does not leave your device. That local personalization is distinct from cloud backup and from optional sharing to improve Microsoft products. Microsoft’s privacy and data FAQ and data-collection explanation describe these separate flows.

Backup & Sync changes the data flow
If you sign in with a Microsoft account and enable Backup & Sync, Microsoft says your personal language-model data is stored on its servers and synchronized across opted-in devices. This can preserve learned language data after an app update or uninstall, or when you replace a device. It also means that the learned model is no longer only on the phone. See Microsoft’s Backup & Sync instructions.

Product-improvement sharing is a separate opt-in
Microsoft describes this optional sharing as including occasional snippets of typed phrases and keypress behavior, such as whether words were deleted or changed. For signed-in users, it also describes fragments about words and how likely they are to occur together. Microsoft says it anonymizes shared fragments and removes personal or unusual words; that is the company’s description of its process, not an independently verified guarantee. You can change the choice in Privacy settings using “Help Microsoft to improve.” Details are in the typing-data sharing FAQ.
Microsoft separately says it may periodically receive anonymous usage statistics, such as character totals and keystrokes saved, and that crash information may be sent to Microsoft and Google. These are different from language-model backup and content snippets, according to its data-collection explanation.

Are passwords and sensitive details protected?
Microsoft says SwiftKey does not learn from fields designated as password fields and does not remember long numbers such as credit-card numbers. That protection depends on the app or website correctly identifying the field. Microsoft lists exceptions: a password typed into a message or email can be learned; a site or app may fail to mark a password field correctly; and a “show password” option may change how the field is classified. A password prediction is therefore possible in some circumstances, rather than impossible by design. Microsoft says a learned word can be deleted; its privacy FAQ explains these limits.
How privacy differs on Android and iOS
| Feature or setting | Android | iOS |
|---|---|---|
| Incognito | Microsoft documents manual activation from the keyboard toolbar and automatic activation in some detected private or sensitive contexts. | Microsoft says Incognito is not currently supported. |
| Full Access | Not applicable as an iOS keyboard permission. | Allows the keyboard extension to communicate with its host app and access the network. |
| Cloud Clipboard | Microsoft documents syncing clipboard content with Windows when a Microsoft account and supported Windows PC are used. | Microsoft says clipboard syncing is unavailable. |
Platform availability and permission descriptions above reflect Microsoft support documentation; features and labels can change. For platform details, see its pages on Incognito, iOS Full Access, and Cloud Clipboard.

Incognito is a learning control, not a universal privacy switch
On Android, Microsoft says Incognito stops SwiftKey from learning while the mode is active. It may also activate automatically when SwiftKey detects a private browser session or a field marked private or sensitive. This addresses keyboard learning; it does not establish that every keyboard or device data flow stops. Microsoft says this mode is not supported on iOS. See the Incognito explanation.
What iOS Full Access means
Full Access technically permits the iOS keyboard extension to communicate with its container app and access the network. Microsoft says the permission supports language models, personalized learning, preferences, themes, and related app components. It also says that granting Full Access does not by itself mean everything typed is transmitted, and that words typed are not transferred unless the user creates a SwiftKey account. Treat those as Microsoft’s claims about its implementation, while recognizing that network access is a meaningful permission. Its Full Access explanation gives the company’s rationale.

Optional features and Android permissions to review
Clipboard syncing
Microsoft documents Cloud Clipboard as an Android feature for syncing clipboard content with Windows. It requires a Microsoft account and a supported Windows PC. Microsoft says clips are transmitted securely and are not permanently stored or processed on its servers; it says the feature is unavailable on iOS. Because copied text can contain sensitive information, enable this only if the cross-device convenience is useful to you. See Microsoft’s clipboard instructions.
Permissions tied to features
Microsoft’s Android permissions page associates network access with optional cloud services, themes, and error reports; microphone access with voice typing; and camera access with features that use the camera. It also describes permissions related to vibration, notifications, startup, and device behavior. The page is vendor documentation and may not match every operating-system or app version exactly. Check the permissions actually granted to SwiftKey on your own device and decide whether the associated features are worth enabling. See Microsoft’s permissions explanation.

How to review or remove SwiftKey data
Menu names can change by app version, so start with SwiftKey’s current Account and Privacy settings rather than relying on an old screen-by-screen path. Microsoft documents an in-app data portal for account preferences and personal data, as well as ways to delete a cloud backup and remove a local language model. The data portal instructions and privacy FAQ describe those controls.
- Review whether you are signed in and whether Backup & Sync is enabled.
- Check the Privacy setting for “Help Microsoft to improve” if you do not want to share typing data for product improvement.
- If you use Android, check whether Incognito is active when typing in sensitive contexts; do not treat it as a substitute for reviewing cloud and sharing settings.
- Review any optional clipboard, voice-typing, or camera-dependent features and their device permissions.
- If you want to remove learned data, distinguish between deleting the cloud backup and removing the local language model; use the relevant controls in the app or data portal.
Who may be comfortable using SwiftKey?
SwiftKey is easier to accept if you are comfortable with Microsoft’s documented practices, keep cloud backup and product-improvement sharing off unless you need them, and review optional feature permissions. If you want no keyboard learning, Microsoft documents Incognito only for Android; iOS users do not have that control according to current support material. If your standard is independent verification of the keyboard’s data handling, the Microsoft support pages cited here do not establish that an independent audit has taken place.
