Neither new nor used is automatically the better value. A new console can be worth the extra cost when it buys you clear warranty coverage, straightforward returns, and the exact model you need. A used or certified-refurbished console can be the better buy when the savings are substantial and you can verify its condition and protections. Compare the same model and edition, then weigh the full price against what is included and what happens if something goes wrong.
Start with the exact console you need
Compare offers for the same generation and model, not just consoles with similar names. Check whether each is a disc or digital edition, its storage, condition, and included accessories. A lower sticker price may reflect a different product rather than a better deal.

For example, Xbox Series S plays digital games only and does not play physical discs, according to Xbox’s product listing. If you own disc games or want to buy and lend physical copies, it is not a like-for-like substitute for a disc-equipped console. Consider your existing library and how you want to access games before comparing prices.

Used or pre-owned
These labels do not, by themselves, tell you who tested the console or what protection you get. A private seller may offer it as-is; a retailer may have its own inspection and return policy. Check the actual listing and terms rather than assuming the manufacturer will cover a secondhand purchase. PlayStation’s US buying guide says third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by its warranty: PlayStation buying guide.

Certified refurbished
“Certified refurbished” generally signals a seller’s defined inspection or restoration process, but the standards and warranty vary by seller. In the US, Sony says its certified-refurbished products are fully tested to the same functional standards as new products and include a standard one-year limited warranty; its cited refurbished PS5 listing specifies a 12-month manufacturer warranty. Microsoft says refurbished Xbox consoles include a 90-day warranty. See the current terms on Sony’s refurbished page, the PS5 listing, and Microsoft Store’s refurbished FAQ.
Those examples show why the label alone is not enough: compare the named seller, inspection process, warranty length, and return terms for the specific offer.

Compare the total value, not just the price
For each offer, write down the current price and what you would actually receive. A used console missing a controller or required cable may cost less upfront but require additional spending. A refurbished model may cost more than a private-sale unit while including a warranty and a defined return route.
- Exact model and edition: Match the generation, disc drive, and storage to your needs.
- Condition and testing: Find out who inspected or repaired it and what was checked.
- Warranty: Identify whether coverage is from the manufacturer, retailer, or seller, and read its duration and conditions.
- Returns: Check the refund or replacement deadline, exclusions, and any return shipping or fees.
- Included items: Confirm the controller, power and HDMI cables, stand, disc drive, and packaging, as relevant.
- Seller and account status: Consider seller reputation, proof of purchase, and whether the console has been reset and removed from the prior owner’s account.
Use the offer’s current terms: policies and stock can change, and the examples below are US-specific rather than universal consumer protections.

Returns and warranties can change the calculation
In the US, GameStop’s support policy, last updated April 23, 2026, says pre-owned items are refundable within seven days and eligible for replacement within 15 days. Microsoft Store describes a 60-day process for starting returns on eligible physical products, subject to exclusions and other conditions. Check the listing and current policy before buying: GameStop’s policy and Microsoft’s return FAQ.
Coverage also varies by platform and seller. Nintendo of America’s warranty information ties coverage to products within their original warranty period and refers to original-purchaser evidence requirements. Nintendo Store US limits direct physical-product returns to 30 days and excludes opened or used items. These are distinct examples, not a single rule for every secondhand Nintendo console; check Nintendo warranty information and the Nintendo Store return policy for their terms.

Sony’s US certified-refurbished PS5 Slim listing advertises $100 off versus the newer PS5 Slim model. That is a listing-specific comparison, not evidence of a typical used-console discount or a market-wide saving. How to check a private-sale console
PlayStation’s US buying guide recommends asking for a video showing the ports, buttons, and disc drive working where applicable, and says to ensure the seller has deactivated the console and no longer has access to it. For a more complete practical check, ask the seller to demonstrate these functions before you pay:
- Power-on and a stable picture through HDMI.
- USB ports, controller pairing, and controller buttons.
- Wi-Fi or network connection.
- Disc reading, if the console has a disc drive.
At pickup, test the console and controller yourself if possible. Look for physical damage and listen for unusual noise; stop if the system overheats or behaves erratically. Confirm it has been reset and is no longer tied to the previous owner’s account. If the seller will not allow a reasonable check, treat that as added risk rather than assuming the console works.
Which option is better for you?
Choose new when certainty matters more than the lowest price
A new console is often the clearer value if the price difference is modest and the offer gives you the warranty, return process, or exact edition you want. It also avoids uncertainty about prior wear and missing accessories.
Choose certified refurbished when the protections are clear
Refurbished can make sense when a named seller explains its testing, provides a useful warranty and return option, and prices the exact model meaningfully below a comparable new unit. Read the terms rather than treating “certified” as a guarantee that every seller’s standards match.
Choose a private used sale only when the savings justify the risk
A private sale may offer the lowest upfront price, but you need to account for limited recourse, verify the system, and confirm what is included. If you cannot inspect it or establish its account status, the discount may not compensate for the uncertainty.
Quick Recap
A simple offer-by-offer decision
- Match the product: Record the exact model, edition, storage, and condition for each offer.
- Calculate the real cost: Add any controller, cable, stand, or other essential item that is missing.
- Read the protections: Note who backs the warranty, how long it lasts, and the return deadline and conditions.
- Assess what you can verify: For a private sale, request a working demonstration and confirm reset and deactivation; for a retailer offer, save the listing and policy.
- Pick the offer whose risk-adjusted price works for you: Pay more for new or refurbished if the coverage and convenience are worth it; otherwise, buy used only when its verified savings are enough.
