Open Rack standards define a framework for making conforming data-center equipment intermateable across conforming racks and power systems. They do not guarantee that any server will fit or operate in every rack labeled OCP or ORv3: compatibility depends on the rack generation, mounting geometry, usable depth, rails, busbar interface, and electrical configuration.
What Open Rack standards cover
Open Rack is an Open Compute Project (OCP) rack architecture. OCP’s Rack & Power project covers both 19-inch EIA-compatible and 21-inch Open Rack systems, along with rack-level power conversion, storage and control, and the shelves, supports, sub-chassis and adapters used to install IT gear. Those mechanical and electrical elements work together, so a rack’s nominal width alone cannot establish compatibility.

The OCP Open Rack Base Specification Version 3, dated 24 August 2022, states that it is intended to define the requirements needed to ensure “intermateability of IT Gear across different racks and power systems developed to the Open Compute Project.” Intermateability is the goal for equipment and infrastructure that meet the relevant requirements; it is not a blanket promise for all products marketed as OCP-compatible.
What ORv3 means in practice
ORv3 means Open Rack Version 3. The version identifies a rack architecture, but a label by itself does not tell you which mounting hardware or power components a particular rack includes.

For example, an OCP Marketplace listing for Eaton Open Rack v3 describes convertible rails for 21-inch ORv3 gear and traditional 19-inch EIA equipment, including mixed configurations. It also describes rack options with or without an ORv3 busbar and power shelf. In that implementation, the vertical busbar distributes DC power through blind-mate connections. These are options in one vendor’s implementation, not universal ORv3 features.
Why mounting pitch matters
The Version 3 base specification defines a 48 mm vertical OpenU pitch and optional support for the 44.45 mm EIA 310-D rack-unit pitch. These dimensions are not identical. A rack can support equipment from both systems only if its design and the specified rails, shelves or conversion hardware provide the required mounting arrangement.

Confirm the equipment’s required pitch, width and support hardware against the exact rack configuration. A conversion shelf or rail may make mixed installation possible, but you should not assume it is included or suitable for every device.
Why power compatibility needs its own check
Some ORv3 equipment receives rack-level DC power through a busbar rather than through the same arrangement used by conventional 19-inch servers connected to a rack PDU. A device that fits mechanically may still have an incompatible voltage, connector, busbar position, capacity or redundancy requirement.

A GIGABYTE ORv3 solution sheet gives a model-specific example: it lists a 21-inch, 44OU rack with a 48V DC busbar and an optional 1OU, 33 kW power shelf. It also lists specific servers with 48V or 48V-to-54V busbar input, as well as conversion shelves and other optional parts. Treat those as stated configurations, not as specifications for every ORv3 rack or server; check the documentation and revision for the exact products being procured.
How to check whether a server and rack are compatible
- Identify the rack and payload generation. Confirm the rack’s Open Rack version and the server’s supported rack or payload standard using their model-specific documentation.
- Match width and pitch. Check whether the equipment requires 21-inch Open Rack mounting, 19-inch EIA mounting, or a supported mixed arrangement. Verify the required 48 mm OpenU or 44.45 mm EIA spacing and the rails or shelves that provide it.
- Check usable depth and clearance. Compare the server’s dimensions with the rack’s usable depth, accounting for doors, cable routing and other installation constraints.
- Verify busbar position and connector. Confirm the busbar location and the device’s matching connector arrangement. The Google implementation ORv3 specification, dated 23 September 2022, cautions that support for a 21-inch OCP payload alone does not settle busbar placement for other payloads.
- Match the electrical configuration. Verify input voltage, connector, available power capacity and redundancy requirements against the power shelf and busbar configuration.
- Confirm conversion parts and what is included. For a mixed 19-inch EIA and Open Rack installation, check that the exact rails, shelves or adapters required for that rack and device are specified and included—or separately ordered.
OCP’s Rack & Power project scope and specifications treat mounting and power as connected parts of rack implementation. For a procurement decision, compare the exact rack and server models, documentation revisions, and bill of materials rather than relying on a standards label alone.

What to compare when evaluating rack options
- Whether the rack supports 21-inch Open Rack gear, 19-inch EIA gear, or a documented combination.
- Vertical pitch and usable mounting height.
- Usable equipment depth, clearance and cable access.
- Busbar location, connector interface, voltage and power-shelf configuration.
- Which rails, conversion shelves or adapters are included or optional.
- The exact rack and server models and their configuration revisions.
The Google implementation specification addresses both 21-inch OCP and 19-inch EIA payloads and flags busbar placement as a consideration. That is why two racks with similar advertised dimensions may still differ in whether a particular server can be installed and powered.
