How to Size and Plan On-Site Fuel Storage for Data Center Generators

Size data center generator fuel storage from actual load-specific consumption and required runtime, then validate usable capacity, delivery capability, and local requirements.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Size on-site generator fuel storage from the selected generators’ manufacturer fuel-consumption curves at the loads they will actually serve, multiplied by the hours they must run together. Then account for unusable fuel, the project’s defined reserve, fuel-transfer capacity, refueling access, and the codes adopted where the site is located. There is no single runtime or tank size that applies to every data center.

How do you calculate generator fuel tank size?

Start with the operating scenario—not a generic gallons-per-hour figure. Identify the critical load to be supported, which generators will run at the same time, and the duration each scenario must be sustained. Obtain the selected generator’s fuel rate at each relevant load from its manufacturer; a genset’s consumption changes with operating load, so a full-load estimate is not a substitute for its model-specific curve.

  1. Define the scenario. Record the supported load, the units expected to operate concurrently, and the required runtime for each design case.
  2. Get the load-specific fuel rates. Use the manufacturer’s data for the exact selected generator and the intended operating load. Ask the supplier or system designer to confirm which rating and operating conditions the figures assume.
  3. Calculate gross fuel consumption. For each concurrently operating unit, multiply its hourly fuel rate by its planned operating hours, then add the units’ results: gross fuel (gal) = Σ [unit fuel rate (gal/hr at scenario load) × runtime (hr)].
  4. Convert consumption to required storage. Add the project-defined operating reserve to gross consumption, then ensure the tank’s usable volume above the pickup or other unusable inventory is at least that amount. Use the tank supplier’s or designer’s stated usable capacity; nominal tank volume alone does not establish how much fuel can be delivered to the engines.
  5. Validate delivery and replenishment. Check that pumps, transfer equipment, piping, and any day tank can supply the required flow in the operating scenarios. Confirm that delivery access and the replenishment assumptions fit the site’s resilience plan.

For a preliminary screening illustration only, Cummins’ 2015 application guidance gives an approximate full-load benchmark of 0.07 U.S. gallons per hour per rated kilowatt for diesel generator sets, based on standby rating. Applying that rough figure to two 1,000 kW units running together at full load for 24 hours gives 3,360 gallons of gross consumption: 2 × 1,000 kW × 0.07 gal/hr per rated kW × 24 hr. This arithmetic excludes reserve and unusable fuel and is not a design value; the selected models’ fuel curves must replace the benchmark in final calculations.

Do not insert an assumed reserve percentage or a universal dead-volume allowance. The cited guidance does not establish either. Set those values for the project with the fuel-system designer, accounting for the tank and pickup arrangement and the owner’s operating requirements.

How many hours of generator fuel should a data center store?

Set the runtime target from the owner’s resilience requirements and the applicable codes and local amendments. The sources cited here establish no universal number of autonomy hours for data centers. The target should state which load must be supported and which generators must run for the specified duration; a runtime figure without those conditions is ambiguous.

A New York City Building Code Chapter 27 provision cited for fuel-reliant systems calls for an on-premises supply sufficient for at least six hours of operation at full demand. That is a jurisdiction-specific code example, not a general data-center standard. Confirm the text and adopted requirements that apply to the actual site with the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

Should you use a sub-base tank, a remote bulk tank, or a day tank?

A sub-base tank is integrated beneath or with a generator; a remote bulk tank stores fuel elsewhere on site and feeds the generator system. A remote arrangement may include an intermediate day tank, but whether one is needed depends on the engineered system and the generator manufacturer’s requirements. Compare the arrangements against the same project conditions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Arrangement What to evaluate Planning implications
Sub-base tank Usable capacity, site layout, code and siting limits, and refueling access Manufacturer guidance notes it can reduce site work. Capacity needs, applicable limits, or poor refill access may make it unsuitable.
Remote bulk tank Transfer equipment and fuel delivery capability, routing, siting constraints, maintenance access, and delivery access Confirm the full transfer arrangement can deliver the required flow to the engines in each design scenario.
Remote bulk tank with an intermediate day tank Day-tank capacity and controls, transfer equipment, and coordination with the genset and fuel-system design A day tank may form part of a remote-tank arrangement; do not assume it is required or sufficient without manufacturer and designer review.

No arrangement is inherently best for every site. Have the genset manufacturer and fuel-system designer review the proposed configuration, including usable capacity, transfer capability, maintainability, and the project layout.

Which fire, building, and spill rules should the design team check?

Requirements depend on the site’s jurisdiction, adopted code editions, amendments, fuel classification, tank construction and location, and stored quantity. Identify those inputs before relying on a clearance, protection rule, or code example. The following cited provisions illustrate why review must be site-specific:

  • California: The California Fire Code 2025 chapter says emergency and standby systems required by that code are to be installed under applicable building and electrical codes and NFPA 110 and NFPA 111. It also calls for UL 2200 listing for stationary generators required by that code. This is a California provision, not a nationwide blanket requirement.
  • International Fire Code: The International Code Council’s 2024 IFC Chapter 57 addresses flammable and combustible liquid storage. Determine which edition and provisions the site’s jurisdiction adopted and how they apply to the actual fuel and tank installation.
  • Federal SPCC applicability: EPA describes three elements to assess: the facility stores, transfers, uses, or consumes oil; it exceeds an applicable capacity threshold; and it could reasonably be expected to discharge oil to navigable waters or adjoining shorelines. EPA’s current SPCC FAQ page describes thresholds of more than 1,320 U.S. gallons aggregate for qualifying aboveground containers, counting containers of at least 55 gallons, or more than 42,000 gallons in completely buried containers. Threshold capacity alone does not determine applicability; assess the full rule, exceptions, and site facts with the responsible owner or operator.

These examples do not replace code review. The fire-protection and code team should confirm the adopted requirements and coordinate the tank and generator layout with the AHJ.

What should the project team verify before approving the fuel plan?

  • The generator models, fuel type, manufacturer fuel curves, and operating rates match the design assumptions.
  • Each scenario identifies the supported load, concurrently operating units, and required runtime.
  • The specified tank capacity is usable fuel capacity, with reserve and unusable inventory treated explicitly rather than hidden in nominal volume.
  • The fuel system can deliver the required flow for the operating scenarios, including any transfer pumps and intermediate tanks.
  • Refueling access and replenishment assumptions are credible for the site’s resilience plan; no universal delivery interval or guarantee is established by the cited sources.
  • The selected arrangement, tank location, and installation have been reviewed against applicable fire, building, environmental, and local requirements.
  • The genset supplier, fuel-system engineer, fire-protection/code team, and AHJ have reviewed the final design basis.
