Wait if you can comfortably do without a console until a sale you can actually monitor; buy now if you need one and the exact model’s current checkout price is fair to you. No confirmed 2026 Black Friday console discounts are established by the sources cited here, so treat last year’s offers as history—not a forecast.
What the current prices tell you—and what they don’t
A manufacturer’s recommended price is a useful baseline, not a promise that every retailer charges that amount or a prediction of the next sale. Sony’s recommended PS5 prices effective April 2, 2026, are:

These are Sony’s recommended prices, not live retailer prices. Sony said the increases reflected “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” The announcement documents a price increase; it does not establish whether prices will rise or fall again. How much weight should you give past sales?
There is evidence of meaningful US PS5 offers in 2025, but it cannot tell you what a 2026 sale will include. ShopBack reported that 2025 Black Friday offers included a PS5 Digital Edition Fortnite bundle for $399.99, a PS5 1TB Fortnite bundle for $449.99, and $100 off PS5 Pro. Sony’s US events page lists Days of Play for May 27–June 10, 2026, and a PlayStation Store Summer Sale for July 15–August 12, 2026. The Summer Sale is primarily for digital games, add-ons and more; its existence does not show that console hardware will be discounted. ShopBack’s October 8, 2026 guide says Black Friday falls on November 27 and that PS5 offers began about a week early in each of the previous two years. It also says Sony had not announced its 2026 offers as of that article’s publication. That is a reason to monitor announcements in November, not evidence that any particular discount will recur. The cited sources do not confirm exact 2026 Black Friday console discounts for PS5, Xbox or Switch 2.
Compare the actual deal, not just the headline price
A lower number is not necessarily a better offer if it is for a different model, condition or bundle. Compare the same SKU at the final checkout price, and value included extras only if you would otherwise buy them.

- Match the model: distinguish disc and digital editions, Pro models, storage tiers and generations. A price for one is not a direct comparison with another.
- Calculate bundle value realistically: subtract the value of a game or service only if you genuinely want it. Check subscription auto-renewal terms and any separate costs.
- Compare condition and coverage: new, used, previously played and certified refurbished consoles may differ in warranty, returns and included accessories.
- Use a sensible baseline: compare against the current recommended price and verified earlier offers, not only a crossed-out price on a retailer listing.
- Check the total: account for local taxes, shipping, stock and retailer competition; these vary by country.
For example, ShopBack reported a US Nintendo Switch 2 list price of $499.99 and a Mario Kart World bundle at $549.99 in 2026. The $50 difference is only meaningful as savings if you want the included game; these reported figures do not establish a current sale price or an announced 2026 discount. Check whether buying now protects you from a later price drop
A return window or price-adjustment policy can reduce the downside of buying before a sale, but coverage depends on the seller, product and purchase date. Microsoft says qualifying products bought from its Store during October 1–December 2, 2026, may qualify for a price adjustment through January 31, 2027, subject to eligibility, terms and stock. Microsoft also says certified refurbished Xbox consoles may be available through Microsoft Stores for up to $100 off MSRP. “Up to” is not a discount guaranteed on every model or at every time. Choose based on your timing and tolerance for uncertainty
Wait if the delay costs you little
- You are price-sensitive and can wait for a promotion without missing something important.
- You have a particular model in mind and can track that exact SKU rather than a loosely comparable bundle.
- You are willing to compare multiple sellers and skip an offer that is inflated, out of stock or padded with extras you do not want.
Set a target based on the model’s current regional price and verified offers for that same model. Because there is no established market-wide average discount or reliable probability of a future reduction, do not treat a guessed percentage or last year’s bundle price as a promised target.
Buy now if having it sooner is worth the price
- You have a near-term reason to play, such as a game or shared household use you value now.
- The exact model is in stock at a price you consider fair after checking competing listings.
- The bundle contains content you would buy anyway, or the standalone console is priced better for your needs.
Before checkout, read the seller’s return and price-adjustment rules for this exact product and purchase date. That may give you a path to respond if the price falls, but only if the stated eligibility conditions apply.
