There is no single anime every beginner should watch first. Start with the kinds of stories you already enjoy, choose a film or manageable series, then check whether it is available where you live and whether it has your preferred audio or subtitles.
Where do I start if I’m new to anime?
Anime is a medium, not one genre or audience. It includes action, romance, fantasy, comedy, sports, science fiction, grounded drama and quieter stories. Genre labels are useful browsing filters, but they do not define every show or capture every blend of styles.

Think about what you already like in books, films, television or games. If you enjoy fast-paced adventure, try an action series; if you prefer character relationships, look for romance or drama. Crunchyroll News’ beginner guide makes the same basic point: viewers’ tastes differ, so a good starting point depends on what you want to watch, not a required order. Read its beginner recommendations.
Choose a first watch to match your taste
These are examples, not a ranking or a universal starter list. Crunchyroll News selected them to illustrate different entry points:
#1 Best Overall
| What you enjoy | Example to explore | Why it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Superhero stories and action | My Hero Academia | An action-oriented superhero story. |
| Fantasy | Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End | A fantasy option for viewers drawn to that setting. |
| Sports drama | Chihayafuru | A competitive sports drama centered on karuta. |
For more possibilities, browse categories such as romance, comedy and sports. A platform’s categories are practical discovery tools rather than a complete map of anime. Crunchyroll’s genre guide gives examples across several categories.
How much time do you want to commit?
If you want a self-contained first experience, a feature film can be easier to fit into a single sitting. If you want to try a series, consider starting with a shorter or approachable show rather than committing immediately to a long-running one. This is a practical way to manage your time, not a definitive ranking of titles by length.
Release status matters, too. A completed series lets you watch at your own pace without waiting for new episodes. A currently airing seasonal show can be a good choice if you want to follow a new release as it comes out. Crunchyroll points viewers to its seasonal launch listings for currently airing shows.

How to find a show you can actually watch
- Pick a story type. Choose a genre or mood that matches something you already enjoy: action, fantasy, romance, comedy, sports, science fiction, drama or something more relaxed.
- Choose your commitment. Decide whether you want a film, a series you can watch at your own pace, or a current seasonal show.
- Search the services you already use. Look up the specific title in the catalog available in your country. Streaming catalogs differ by platform and region, so a recommendation is not a guarantee that a show is available to you.
- Check the title’s language options. Before starting, open the individual title page and confirm which audio and subtitle tracks are available in your region.
Crunchyroll Help explains how viewers browse by category and select available audio and subtitle tracks. Subtitle languages and dubbed audio vary by show, so check the specific title rather than assuming your preferred language is offered. Visit Crunchyroll Help.

There is no need to treat one option as the “right” way to watch. If you prefer the original Japanese audio, check which subtitles are offered. If you would rather listen in another language, see whether a dub is available. The available choices depend on the title and region; confirm them before you settle in.
What to know about anime’s popularity
Anime is a broad entertainment medium, and industry reporting tracks it across many parts of the business. The Association of Japanese Animations publishes annual industry reports and English summaries; its page lists the 2025 English summary as published on March 26, 2026. The report is useful context on the industry, but you do not need market statistics or background reading to choose a first show. See the Association of Japanese Animations’ English data page.
