A coaxial cable carries a signal through four concentric parts: a center conductor, an insulating dielectric, a metallic shield, and an outer jacket. Their materials and construction vary by product, so the right cable depends on the signal and equipment as well as the route where it will be installed.

What is a coaxial cable?

Coaxial cable—often shortened to coax—is an electrical cable built around a central conductor, with an insulating layer and metallic shield arranged around it, then covered by an outer insulating layer. Amphenol RF describes this four-part construction in its Coaxial Cable Guide.

The parts share a common axis, which gives the cable its name. The center conductor carries the signal; the dielectric keeps it separated from the shield; the shield helps limit interference and contain RF energy; and the jacket protects the cable from its surroundings. A cutaway illustration should be understood as a representative construction, not a universal recipe: conductor, insulation, shielding, and jacket materials differ across products.

What does each layer do?

Center conductor

The inner conductor carries the electrical signal. Depending on the cable, it may be solid or stranded, and may use copper or aluminum. The conductor material and form are product-specific; check the exact cable specification rather than assuming all coax is built alike.

Dielectric insulation

The dielectric surrounds the center conductor and separates it from the metallic shield. This spacing is part of the cable’s electrical design and helps maintain signal integrity. Its material can differ between cable constructions, including between standard and plenum versions of some products.

Metallic shield

The shield surrounds the dielectric. It may be foil, braid, or a combination of the two. Shielding helps protect the inner components from external electromagnetic interference and helps contain RF signals. A cable may have multiple shielding elements; the word “coax” alone does not tell you how many layers it has.

How do real coax cables differ?

Two cables that share a familiar RG designation can still have different materials and constructions. For example, Southwire’s product specifications show these product-family details:

Product family Conductor and dielectric Shield and jacket Impedance and listed uses
Southwire RG6 dual- and quad-shield Bare-copper or copper-clad-steel conductor; polyethylene insulation on non-plenum versions or foamed fluoropolymer insulation on plenum versions. Aluminum foil and braid shielding. Jacket options include PVC or low-smoke PVC; polyethylene is listed for outdoor variants. 75 ohms; CATV and CCTV. These are specifications for the cited product family, not every RG6 cable. Southwire RG6 specification
Southwire RG59 copper-braid Bare-copper or copper-clad-steel conductor; polyethylene insulation on non-plenum versions. Plenum options describe foamed fluoropolymer insulation. Copper braid shield and PVC jacket on the specified non-plenum construction; plenum options describe alternative shielding and jacket constructions. 75 ohms; CATV. These are specifications for the cited product family, not every RG59 cable. Southwire RG59 specification

The 75-ohm value is stated for these cited Southwire RG6 and RG59 products; it should not be treated as a specification for all coaxial cable. Likewise, an RG number by itself does not establish the exact materials, ratings, or suitability of a particular cable.

How to choose coax for your application

Start with the requirements of the system, then confirm them against the exact cable’s datasheet. Amphenol identifies application, frequency, attenuation, impedance, connector compatibility, and flexibility as selection considerations.

  1. Match the cable to the equipment and signal. Check the system’s required impedance and frequency range, and whether the cable’s specified attenuation is acceptable for the intended use. Do not infer these properties from the RG label alone.
  2. Confirm the construction. Read the product specification for conductor and dielectric materials. Similar cable designations can cover products with differing builds.
  3. Check the shield configuration. Verify whether the cable uses braid, foil and braid, or additional shield layers. Choose a documented construction appropriate to the application rather than relying on a generic “coax” description.
  4. Check the installation route and ratings. Confirm that the jacket and any applicable fire or environmental ratings suit the location, such as an indoor, plenum, or outdoor route. Product variants can have different materials and ratings.
  5. Verify connector fit and handling needs. Make sure the connectors are specified for the cable type and size, and consider whether the cable’s flexibility fits the route. Cable preparation and connectorization must suit the specific construction.

What to know about installation

Cable construction is only one part of a reliable installation. Handling, testing, placement, bonding and grounding, preparation, connectorization, activation, and verification may all matter, particularly in access-network work. SCTE’s 2025 recommended-practices catalog identifies SCTE 180 2025 as an outside-plant access-network practice covering these topics. It is not a universal step-by-step procedure for every home or DIY coax installation; follow the requirements applicable to the system and location.
