Smart garments can get power from a conventional battery, textile-integrated energy storage, or energy harvested from movement—but none is a universal solution. For clothing, a power source has to deliver enough energy for its intended electronics without making the garment uncomfortable, fragile, difficult to wash, or impractical to manufacture.
How do smart clothes get power?
It depends on whether the garment has active electronics. Passive textiles can provide useful material properties without powered components. Active smart textiles use energy to run functions such as sensing or responding to a user or the environment. IARPA’s SMART ePANTS program description identifies power sources alongside sensors, computation and storage, and conductive interconnects: power is one part of a system, not a standalone feature.

The familiar option is a battery or other external supply. Researchers are also investigating storage built into textiles and fabrics that harvest energy from movement. These approaches are not interchangeable: a garment still needs a way to deliver usable power to its electronics, and harvested energy may need to be stored before it can be used.
What are the main power options?
| Approach | What it does | Key practical question |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional or removable battery | Supplies stored energy to garment electronics. | Does the garment specify a compatible module, and can it be removed or protected for washing? |
| Textile-integrated storage | Stores energy in a component designed for textile integration. | Can it provide suitable output while remaining flexible, durable, and scalable to manufacture? |
| Motion harvesting | Attempts to convert wearer movement into electrical energy. | Is the useful output sufficient for the intended device, and what storage or charging is still needed? |
| Textile supercapacitors | Researches textile-based energy storage for wearable electronics. | How do performance, flexibility, washability, and manufacturing readiness compare for the intended use? |
| Hybrid textile generators | Combines energy-harvesting mechanisms in a textile system. | Can the combined system be integrated into a garment and withstand deformation and routine use? |
Conventional and removable batteries
A conventional battery remains a practical choice when a garment is designed around a specified supply. The module’s weight, bulk, position, and removal or protection for washing all affect whether it works well in clothing. A power bank or compact battery pack is not automatically compatible: use one only when the garment maker specifies an acceptable external supply or removable battery module.

The European Commission CORDIS record for Powering_eTextiles describes conventional power supplies as an integration challenge because they may not be sufficiently lightweight or discreet for unobtrusive e-textile use. That does not mean batteries are obsolete; it explains why researchers are exploring other ways to integrate power.
Textile-integrated storage
Powering_eTextiles investigated ink-jet-printed energy storage based on two-dimensional nanosheets. The project aimed to assess technical and economic feasibility and the potential for scalable production. Those aims describe research work, not proof that printed textile storage is widely available in commercial garments.

Harvesting energy from movement
Triboelectric and piezoelectric approaches seek to convert movement into electricity. In a 24 March 2022 Nature Reviews Materials highlight, Hannah Hatcher described a lead-free perovskite/polymer nanofiber composite developed to harvest energy from human movement. The highlight also notes that earlier approaches faced challenges including insufficient output and material concerns. This is a reported research result, not evidence that ordinary clothing can charge any device or replace a battery.
Textile supercapacitors and hybrid generators
A 2022 Advanced Science review of smart electronic textile-based wearable supercapacitors treats textile energy storage as a research direction with application and manufacturing criteria to address. Energy performance alone does not determine whether a supercapacitor is suitable for a garment; flexibility, washability, and scalable production also matter.

Can clothing generate electricity from movement?
Research prototypes show that textile or textile-compatible materials can be designed to harvest energy from movement. Whether that is useful in a particular garment depends on the energy delivered to its sensor or other electronics, how consistently the wearer moves, and whether the system needs storage or another supply. The cited sources do not provide a common head-to-head performance dataset or establish that harvested energy universally replaces batteries.

For an active garment, the relevant question is not simply whether it generates electricity, but whether it provides enough usable power for its intended function under real conditions. A movement-harvesting feature might contribute energy without fully powering the garment; the available evidence does not support a universal answer for all devices or designs.

Can a smart shirt be washed?
Do not assume that a power component can go through the wash just because it is built into clothing. Washability depends on the specific garment design and how its electronics, storage, and connections are handled. If a battery or electronic module is removable, follow the maker’s instructions for removing it before washing. If the garment’s care instructions do not explain how to handle its powered components, do not infer that the whole garment is washable.

For emerging textile power technologies, washability is one of the properties that must be evaluated alongside flexibility, durability, and production readiness. The cited reviews identify these as important challenges; they do not establish a general washability standard for smart garments.
How to judge a smart-garment power system
Compare a power approach against the garment’s actual job rather than treating one technology as the winner. The cited reviews and program descriptions do not supply a shared dataset for ranking these options.
Quick Recap
- Useful output: Is the power delivered adequate for the garment’s intended sensor or device?
- Comfort and bulk: Does the supply remain flexible and unobtrusive where it sits on the body?
- Durability: Can the system withstand bending, stretching, and routine wear?
- Washing: What must be removed, protected, or handled differently before laundering?
- Storage and charging: Does the system store harvested energy, and does it still need an external supply?
- Manufacturing: Can its materials and construction be produced reliably at the scale required?
