HemoAct-F, a formulation announced by Chuo University and JAXA in 2018, was described as a laboratory-developed oxygen carrier—not as a treatment tested in cats or approved for veterinary use. Its research is distinct from older clinical reports about Oxyglobin, another oxygen-carrying product with documented risks.
What is HemoAct-F?
HemoAct-F is an experimental hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier developed by a Chuo University team led by Professor Teruyuki Komatsu. The university and JAXA said the formulation combines bovine hemoglobin with recombinant feline serum albumin, a protein made for the project. Their 2018 announcement described the resulting protein cluster as a feline artificial oxygen carrier and a potential red-cell substitute, and reported laboratory oxygen-binding properties.

JAXA’s contribution involved opportunities to crystallize recombinant feline serum albumin and analyze its structure using the Kibo Japanese Experiment Module on the International Space Station. The announcement also characterized the formulation as having no blood type and being suitable for long-term storage. Those are claims about the research formulation, not proof of clinical performance, hospital stock, or current availability.
Can cats receive HemoAct-F instead of a transfusion?
The cited announcement reports laboratory research, not a clinical trial in cats. It does not establish that HemoAct-F has been tested as a treatment in living cats, received regulatory approval, or become commercially available. A later Chuo University laboratory overview describes artificial blood work for dogs and cats as under development, including recombinant serum albumin and an artificial plasma product called Aloxa; it does not document feline clinical deployment or a way for owners to obtain HemoAct-F.

So, based on these sources, HemoAct-F cannot be treated as a proven replacement for a feline blood transfusion. A laboratory oxygen carrier and a clinical product are different stages of development: the former does not establish safety, dose, effectiveness, or suitability for a particular patient.
How HemoAct-F differs from Oxyglobin
Oxyglobin is a separate hemoglobin-based oxygen-carrying solution discussed in retrospective reports of cats treated years before HemoAct-F was announced. Those reports offer limited clinical observations about Oxyglobin; they do not demonstrate that HemoAct-F works or is safe.

What the older Oxyglobin studies found—and what they did not
Retrospective series of 48 cats
Weingart and Kohn’s 2008 retrospective report covered 48 cats treated from 2002 through 2006, receiving 65 Oxyglobin infusions. Hemoglobin concentration increased after 41 of the 49 infusion events for which the researchers evaluated a hemoglobin change. The paper also reported 77% overall survival at 24 hours. These results describe seriously ill cats in a retrospective series; without a control group, they do not show that Oxyglobin caused the outcomes or was more effective than other care. The study abstract also reports severe side effects in seven cats with cardiac disease, including pulmonary edema, pleural effusion, and respiratory distress, and warns of potentially life-threatening circulatory overload at the doses used.
Earlier series of 72 cats
Gibson, Callan, Hoffman, and Giger’s 2002 retrospective study examined 72 cats that received a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier during 1998–2000. Among 43 more closely monitored cats, 37 had reported improvements that included measures such as hemoglobin concentration, blood pressure, temperature, appetite, and activity. The authors also reported pulmonary edema in eight cats and pleural effusion in 21. They concluded that possible pulmonary edema or pleural effusion needed further investigation before use could be recommended in cats. The study abstract describes these findings; they are not a dosing guide or evidence that the same outcomes apply to HemoAct-F.

What this means for cat owners
These studies do not support treating an oxygen carrier as a simple, risk-free substitute for compatible feline blood. The historical Oxyglobin reports raise particular concern about circulatory overload and respiratory complications, while the cited HemoAct-F source does not provide clinical safety or effectiveness results in cats. They also do not establish which treatment is appropriate for an individual animal.
If a cat may be anemic or needs urgent care, treatment decisions belong with a veterinarian who can assess the cause and the animal’s condition. HemoAct-F should not be described as an available treatment on the evidence cited here; the current status of its clinical testing, regulatory review, and commercial availability remains unverified.
