What is the Drinkable Book?
The Drinkable Book combines water-safety instructions with disposable paper filter pages. The instructions were printed in English and a local language for intended use, while the tear-out pages were treated with silver or copper nanoparticles. The project was developed as a lightweight, point-of-use approach, particularly for emergency and small-scale assistance—not as a routine household water-treatment system. The American Chemical Society’s 2015 project release describes the book and its testing; the research group’s background explains the intended use.

How does a page filter work?
Water passes through a treated sheet, where the nanoparticles’ biocidal action is intended to kill bacteria. Developer Theresa Dankovich described the proposed silver-ion mechanism this way: “Bacteria percolate through it, absorb silver ions and, as a result, end up dying.” Scientific American and Chemistry World reported her explanation in 2015.
The pages are not simply ordinary paper that strains out visible particles. Their reported effect depends on antimicrobial treatment and the test conditions; the results should not be treated as a universal purification guarantee.

What did the tests find?
The 2015 ACS release reported coliform concentrations of 200 to 3,500,000 colony-forming units (CFU) per 100 milliliters in collected field-water samples. In less-contaminated samples, both silver and copper papers reportedly achieved complete coliform inactivation. In more highly contaminated sources, the release reported a reduction of slightly more than 6 log for silver paper and 5 log for copper paper. These are project-reported experimental results, not guarantees for water from an untested source.
A separate 2015 account reported that a Limpopo, South Africa, field sample fell from approximately 200,000 E. coli CFU per 100 milliliters to fewer than 10 after treatment. That is a result from one reported sample, not proof that every treated batch reaches the same level. The field result was reported by Scientific American and Chemistry World.

The same release reported complete coliform inactivation for both papers in less-contaminated sources. It compared the measured metal release with EPA and WHO limits cited at the time; that comparison is specific to the study and should not be read as a current product-safety certification or as evidence about every water chemistry. The ACS release contains the original reported measurements.

The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: under reported test conditions, the treated paper reduced bacterial indicators, including coliforms and E. coli. It does not establish that the Drinkable Book removes viruses, dissolved heavy metals, pesticides, industrial chemicals, or all other hazards. There is also a practical uncertainty: users may have no way to tell whether enough bacteria have been removed from a particular batch. In the 2015 reporting, University of New South Wales researcher Stuart Kahn raised that concern; it was a caution about judging water safety, not a reported user-behavior test. Capacity, storage, and intended use
Engineering for Change lists a design specification of about 100 liters per page and up to four years per book. The retrieved product summary does not establish current consumer performance or conditions for those figures, so they should be understood as reported design specifications rather than a promise for every page or source water. Treatment does not protect water from contamination after filtering. Keep treated water in a clean, covered safe-water storage container; storage helps prevent recontamination but does not purify water. A 2015 account noted that the concept was used with a filter holder and that virus testing remained unresolved at the time. That historical detail does not establish the current design or status. TIME’s 2015 report.
