In the ideal ice-rule limit, closed strings preserve a distinction between states; thermally excited magnetic monopoles can break those strings and screen the distinction.
The work, published in Physical Review X 16, 041016 (2026), classifies the outcome by spin size, single-ion anisotropy and the symmetries that remain at finite temperature.

How string defects control a phase boundary
Pyrochlore spin ice consists of magnetic moments arranged on a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Competing interactions and local anisotropy create ice-rule constraints, so the lowest-energy configurations can be viewed as flux patterns on the lattice.
Watanabe, Motome and Watanabe formulate a model for classical pyrochlore spin ice with arbitrary spin S, competing exchange interactions and a single-ion anisotropy parameter w. The useful defect language is a network of strings:

- Closed strings remain inside the ice-rule manifold. They cannot simply end, so they preserve a distinction between states and can support a sharp phase boundary.
- Open strings terminate on thermally excited monopoles. Once monopoles are present, the strings can be cut and reconnected, allowing one state to evolve continuously into another.
This is why a transition that exists in a strictly monopole-free model will generally become a crossover at nonzero temperature. The framework does not treat every transition as automatically rounded, however: the remaining symmetry and the allowed defect theory decide whether an abrupt transition survives.
Small anisotropy: integer and half-integer spins diverge
When w is small, the single-ion term favors low spin amplitudes rather than forcing each local moment to its maximum magnitude. The spin’s arithmetic then matters.
Integer spin
For integer S, the monopole-free theory has a continuous deconfinement transition in the three-dimensional XY universality class. Deconfinement here means that the string description changes from confined defects to a regime in which the relevant excitations can separate at criticality.

Half-integer spin
For half-integer S, the same small-w limit remains a U(1) Coulomb liquid rather than crossing a thermodynamic phase boundary. Thus, simply changing from an integer to a half-integer local moment changes the low-amplitude phase structure even before the large-anisotropy limit is considered.

Large anisotropy and the 2S flux rule
At large w, local spin amplitudes are maximized. The emergent flux is then quantized in units of 2S. The authors ask whether this emergent conservation law is compatible with the physical ice rule imposed by the microscopic model.
Compatibility holds if and only if S is at most 3/2. This criterion divides the large-w behavior into a low-spin sector that can support a discrete flux description and a higher-spin sector in which no corresponding discrete clock model exists.
| Spin sector or limit | Defect or flux description | Predicted behavior | Symmetry distinction at finite temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Integer S, small w | Low-amplitude regime with deconfining strings | Continuous 3D XY deconfinement transition | A sharp critical distinction is present in the monopole-free theory |
| Half-integer S, small w | Low-amplitude regime | U(1) Coulomb liquid without a transition | No transition in this limit |
| S = 3/2, large w | Flux sector maps to a three-state Potts model | First-order transition; the line is predicted to terminate at a critical endpoint when monopoles are included | Discrete symmetry can retain an abrupt boundary over part of the phase diagram |
| S ≥ 2, large w | No discrete clock-model mapping | Discrete perturbations are exponentially suppressed and irrelevant at the 3D XY fixed point | 3D XY criticality is protected in the idealized model |
Why spin 3/2 is the exception
The S = 3/2 case sits at the boundary of the compatibility condition and has a special defect structure. That structure maps to a three-state Potts model. A three-state order parameter permits a symmetry-allowed cubic invariant, and this term drives the transition first order rather than continuous.

In the authors’ prediction, however, the discrete Potts structure is strong enough to preserve an abrupt finite-temperature transition. The first-order line should end at a critical endpoint, beyond which the two states connect through a crossover.

This endpoint is a theoretical prediction, not an experimental observation. The cited work reports classical Monte Carlo support for crossover behavior at accessible temperatures, while direct testing of a surviving finite-temperature S = 3/2 transition and its endpoint remains outstanding.
What happens for spins 2 and above
For S ≥ 2 in the large-w regime, the model has no discrete clock-model description. Instead, the partition-function analysis finds that discrete perturbations are exponentially suppressed. At the three-dimensional XY fixed point these perturbations are irrelevant, so they do not destroy the XY critical behavior in the idealized setting.
The result is important because it prevents a simple rule such as “larger spin always produces a stronger discrete transition.” The classification depends on whether a compatible discrete flux structure exists, not only on the magnitude of the local moment.
Connection to high-pressure ice
The same framework offers a way to interpret phases of high-pressure water ice. The midpoints of oxygen-oxygen bonds form a pyrochlore lattice, and the three allowed hydrogen positions along each bond can be represented by a spin-1 magnetic moment.

Ice VII
Ice VII has disordered hydrogen positions. Its hydrogen configuration samples the allowed local states without developing the ordering pattern associated with ice VIII.
Ice VIII
Ice VIII has ordered hydrogen positions and therefore breaks a symmetry that remains intact in ice VII. That symmetry distinction separates ice VIII from the disordered phase by a genuine phase boundary.
Ice X
In ice X, hydrogen atoms move toward the centers of the oxygen-oxygen bonds. Despite this microscopic rearrangement, ice VII and ice X retain the same averaged crystal symmetry. Above absolute zero, they can therefore be connected by a gradual crossover rather than a sharp transition.
This distinction explains why structural changes visible at the local level do not automatically define separate thermodynamic phases. A phase boundary requires a symmetry or other robust distinction that survives fluctuations; if monopoles or equivalent defects erase that distinction, the change is continuous.

What the framework changes about phase classification
The paper reinforces the conventional principle that finite-temperature phases of ordinary matter are classified by broken symmetry. Closed defect strings can make two states look distinct in an ideal constrained model, but thermal monopoles test whether that distinction survives once defects are allowed. If they cut the strings and no symmetry remains to separate the states, the boundary becomes a crossover.
Haruki Watanabe summarized the implication in the institutional announcement of 14 October 2026: “Our results ultimately support the conventional view that the phases of ordinary matter are classified by broken symmetry, and by nothing else. Wherever symmetry could not distinguish between two states, a continuous path connected them without crossing a phase boundary.”
Publication and evidence status
The study was accepted on 8 September 2026 and published by the American Physical Society as Physical Review X 16, 041016 (2026), DOI 10.1103/bkkq-q1v9. Its conclusions are theoretical, based on the specified classical spin-ice model and supporting Monte Carlo analysis. The predicted finite-temperature critical endpoint for S = 3/2 still requires direct experimental confirmation.
