Honeybees appear to adjust how strongly they recruit nestmates after learning whether their previous food-location signals were confirmed, impossible to verify or misleading. In a 2026 experiment, bees that had honestly led recruits to food increased the number of waggle-dance circuits they performed. Bees whose information could not be checked reduced their effort, while bees that had advertised an empty feeder did not increase signaling.
That is evidence of confidence-like modulation of communication, not proof that bees recognize lies in the human sense or consciously reject false information.

What the study actually found
The focal study by Karmi L. Oxman, Ofer Feinerman and Sharoni Shafir measured a dancer’s recruitment effort: the number of circuits completed in successive waggle dances. Only the honest group increased its circuit count over the test dances. The liar group showed no change, and the unverified group decreased its signaling effort.

The researchers did not show that followers identified a dishonest dancer, refused to follow a dance or punished a bee for misleading them. They measured how much effort the focal bee put into signaling after its earlier information had produced different kinds of feedback.

How the honeybee experiment worked
The work took place at the Benjamin Triwaks Bee Research Center in Rehovot, Israel, using colonies based mostly on the Italian honeybee strain Apis mellifera ligustica. The experimental work ran from November 2015 through July 2016. Researchers used five colonies, individually marked as many as 800 bees and recorded 24 focal bees producing 195 dances.
Learning stage
Each focal bee could always obtain sucrose. What changed was what happened to the recruits that followed its advertised location:

Test stage
After the learning stage, each focal bee advertised a new feeder location. Researchers counted the circuits in sequential test dances. This design tested whether a bee’s later signaling effort depended on the reliability or verifiability of its earlier information.

Why “misinformation” needs qualification
In this context, misinformation is an analogy for unreliable or unverifiable information about where food can be found. It does not establish that a bee holds a human-like concept of truth, lies or deception.
The pattern is more specific: bees that had received successful confirmation strengthened their recruitment signal; bees deprived of feedback reduced it; and bees associated with an empty advertised feeder failed to increase it. The authors suggest that a dancer may assess the reliability of its own signal and adjust its intensity, giving followers a cue about how much confidence to place in that signal.
Prof. Sharoni Shafir described the possible function this way: “Since the bee is recruiting for the sake of the colony, and not for personal interests, the system is apparently designed to promote honest dancers and to quiet down signals in the face of ambiguity”.

What the experiment did not show
- It did not demonstrate that followers distinguished honest bees from liars.
- It did not find treatment differences in follower behavior during the test stage.
- It did not directly measure successful recruitment to the second feeder location.
- It did not show conscious lie detection or a human-style understanding of misinformation.
The safest description is that the study assayed dancer signaling effort. A larger number of circuits means more recruitment effort, but it is not the same measurement as the number of followers that leave the hive or the amount of food ultimately collected.
How this compares with earlier evidence
A 2008 replication of the earlier Lake Experiment provides an important limit on stronger interpretations. In that work, bees following dances toward an implausible feeder location were just as likely to leave the hive as control bees. The authors found no evidence that honeybees assessed whether a location was plausible or rejected a dance because the destination seemed unlikely.
The two findings address different behaviors. The 2026 experiment measured how much the dancer signaled after different feedback conditions. The 2008 work measured follower departure in response to an implausible destination. A change in signaling intensity therefore should not be presented as proof that followers independently detect or discard false claims.

Waggle dances are interactive, not one-way broadcasts
Separate work published in 2026 found that the audience also shapes the dance. When actual or potential followers were scarce, dancers encoded direction and distance less precisely. The researchers linked this reduction in precision to movements aimed at attracting an audience and to social feedback inside the colony.
Together, these results support a view of waggle dancing as bidirectional communication. A dancer’s information is shaped not only by what it experienced, but also by whether other bees are available to receive, verify and respond to the signal. Reliability, feedback and audience size can all affect how a dance is produced and interpreted.
Why the result matters for animal communication
Most demonstrations of animal communication focus on the information in a signal, such as direction or distance. This experiment adds a different dimension: signal strength itself may carry information about the conditions under which the signal was learned.
An honest bee that increases its circuits can recruit more attention after successful confirmation. A bee that lacks verification may reduce effort because it has no evidence that its message worked. A bee associated with an empty feeder does not intensify its recruitment, even though the focal bee itself could still obtain sucrose. That pattern is consistent with colony-level communication being tuned by feedback rather than with a simple rule to keep advertising at the same level.
Because the study involved 24 focal bees and 195 dances across five colonies, its result is meaningful but bounded. It concerns a particular experimental design, mostly Italian-strain honeybees and a measured change in dance effort. It should not be generalized into a claim that all bees, in all settings, identify deceptive individuals or suppress every inaccurate message.
The precise answer to “Do bees know when another bee is lying?”
Not on the evidence currently available. Honeybees can modulate waggle-dance recruitment effort after information has been confirmed, left unverified or contradicted by recruits’ experience. That is a sophisticated adjustment of signaling strength, but it is different from proving that a bee consciously knows another bee is lying. The strongest conclusion is that reliability-related feedback can change how intensely a honeybee recruits its colony.
