Its 2018 proof of concept followed the reduction of benzene-d6 with deuterium (D2) over a 3 wt% platinum-on-MCM-41 catalyst, pairing NMR measurements of changing composition with neutron scattering’s structural information.
What NeuNMR measures
Neutron scattering and NMR answer different questions about a reaction. Neutron scattering interacts with atomic nuclei and can distinguish neighboring atoms and isotopes, providing structural information. NMR tracks sample composition over time. Interpreted together, the measurements can relate changes in reaction mixture to changes in the liquid and catalyst pore environment.

The method’s central design choice is a shared sample chamber. Separate experiments can differ in conditions, complicating comparisons of kinetics and mechanism. With both techniques observing a reaction in the same chamber, the setup is designed to keep sample temperature and pressure identical for the two measurements.
What the published demonstration showed
The 2018 study tested the integrated arrangement on the heterogeneous reduction of benzene-d6 with D2 using 3 wt% Pt/MCM-41. The catalyst formulation is specific to that demonstration, not a general requirement for NeuNMR. The work presented the apparatus as a way to investigate physicochemical changes in the liquid phase and catalyst pores during a reaction.

The authors proposed that the approach could be applied to more complex reactions involving multiple pathways and could help investigate how confinement relates to selectivity and reactivity. Those are potential applications; the proof of concept does not establish that the apparatus has already studied every such reaction.
Why combine the methods in one chamber?
When a reaction is measured by two techniques in separate setups, differences in temperature or pressure can make it harder to determine whether the measurements describe the same reaction state. A common chamber addresses that comparability problem. As University of Cambridge researcher Michael D. Mantle put it in 2018, “By combining the two techniques in one sample chamber we ensure that the reactions conditions in terms of sample temperature and pressure are identical. This is particularly important as the NMR provides the composition as a function of time for the neutron analysis.”
Rank #2
The combination does not make the techniques interchangeable: NMR supplies time-dependent composition, while neutron scattering contributes structural evidence. Their value lies in interpreting those different observations against the same reaction conditions.

Integrating instruments inside a neutron chamber creates practical constraints. The 2018 account described limited space, with the NMR magnet inside the chamber and its electronic console outside. Vacuum operation also made heat generation and dissipation important engineering concerns.
Rank #3
Experimental chemistry can affect measurement sensitivity. Mantle noted that hydrogen–deuterium exchange and the presence of solvent are among the factors that influence the neutron and NMR signals. Accordingly, the method’s suitability and sensitivity depend on the reaction and sample, rather than following automatically from the combined design.
How NeuNMR fits into NMR catalysis research
NeuNMR is a particular integrated arrangement, not a synonym for all NMR work on catalysis. A 2025 review of time-domain NMR in liquid-phase heterogeneous catalysis describes other applications, including characterizing wetted porosity and surface area, measuring fluid–catalyst adsorption energy, mapping liquid distribution in packed beds, and studying fluid transport through catalyst materials. Those broader applications provide context for NMR in the field; they should not be mistaken for results from the NeuNMR proof of concept.

What was proposed next—and what remains unconfirmed
In 2018, continuous-flow testing and combining the setup with synchrotron radiation were described as possible next steps under discussion. The sources cited here do not establish whether either development was later completed, so they should be treated as proposals from that time, not current capabilities.

NeuNMR’s demonstrated contribution is a shared-condition experiment that connects time-resolved composition with structural information for a liquid-phase catalytic reaction. Its broader promise is to help researchers interpret reaction behavior in confined catalyst pores, subject to the practical and sample-specific constraints of the instruments.
