A virtual background that looks backwards in your own preview is often just a mirrored self-view. That does not automatically mean other people see it backwards: some apps mirror only the image shown to you. First check whether the reversal appears to other participants or in a recording, then use the control for your specific app rather than changing the background image blindly.
Why does a virtual background look backwards?
Many video apps show your own camera image as if you were looking in a mirror. That makes text or objects in your self-view appear reversed, even when the outgoing video is oriented differently. The behavior is app-specific, so a mirrored preview alone cannot tell you what other people see.

For example, Microsoft says Teams’ “Mirror my video” setting changes only your view, and Cisco says Webex mirror view is not broadcast to other participants. Check whether other people see the reversal
- Ask another participant whether text or recognizable details in your video look reversed to them.
- If the meeting is recorded, check the recording or view it on another device. A reversed local preview is not enough evidence to alter the image file.
- If only your preview looks reversed, adjust the self-view setting if your app provides one. If other people also see it reversed, check the selected background image and whether that file was already flipped.
How to change the mirror view in Teams
In the Teams desktop app, open Settings > Devices and switch Mirror my video on or off. Choose the orientation that is easiest for you to use in your own preview. Microsoft states that changing this setting affects only your view.

Background choice and preview orientation are separate controls in Teams. Use its background or video-effects controls to select a background; use Settings > Devices > Mirror my video to change the self-view. Controls may be in different places or have different labels in other clients or versions, so look in the current app’s Settings or Devices page if the path differs. What to know in Meet and Webex
Google Meet
Google documents that your background can appear mirrored or inverted in self-view. The cited help page does not establish a specific control for changing that orientation, so do not assume that a particular toggle or correction is available. Check Meet’s current help for your device and client before changing the source image. Google Meet background help.

Cisco Webex
Webex says your self-view is reversed by default, like a reflection in a mirror, and that mirror view applies to your self-view rather than what other participants receive. Its help article provides the instructions for turning off mirror view; follow the steps for the Webex client you use. Turn off mirror view in Webex.
Zoom
The available platform documentation here does not establish current, universal Zoom steps for desktop and mobile. Check the settings and current Zoom help for the specific client you use rather than relying on instructions that may be outdated or for a different device.

If the background image itself has reversed text
Once you have confirmed what the audience sees, check which background file is selected and inspect the original file for reversed text, logos, or other details. If the file is already flipped, choosing or correcting the source image may resolve the audience-facing problem. Do not permanently flip the image just because it looks reversed in your own preview: that can make it wrong for everyone else.

A physical green screen can improve how a person is separated from a virtual background in Teams, but it does not change the self-view mirror setting or correct reversed text. Treat background quality and image orientation as separate issues. Teams background effects.
