The right credential depends on the model and on whether an administrator has changed its factory setting. For some LaserJet Embedded Web Server (EWS) logins, the username is admin and the password is a printer-specific PIN; other HP models use a PIN printed on a label. Check the instructions for your exact model before trying a login.
First, identify which password the printer is asking for
HP printers can use separate credentials for different tasks. An EWS username and password or PIN protect the printer’s browser-based settings. A Wi-Fi Direct password lets a device connect directly to the printer. Your home Wi-Fi password belongs to the router’s network. These credentials are not interchangeable.

Find the printer’s exact model or series on its label or control panel, then use HP’s instructions for that model. HP’s EWS username and password or PIN guidance explains what to check when the EWS requests a credential.

Some LaserJet EWS logins
For the LaserJet EWS workflow described by HP, open the printer’s IP address in a browser while your computer is on the same network. The username is admin; when the page requests a password, use the WPS Security PIN shown on the printer’s Network Configuration Page. Follow the instructions for your specific model to print that report. HP also describes Wi-Fi Direct credentials as available from the printer menu or Network Configuration Page, but those are for a different connection and are not the EWS password. LaserJet Pro 4001–4004 and MFP 4101–4104
For these specified families, HP says the factory-set PIN is on a label inside the cartridge access door. This location is not a rule for every HP printer. HP also notes that some supported standard models manufactured since January 2023 may have an updated 8-digit Admin PIN if it was changed during initial setup. Use the guidance for the exact model rather than assuming a PIN length or location. See HP’s LaserJet Pro PIN instructions.
Other HP models
Sticker placement and credential setup vary across HP families. Check the label on the printer and its model-specific HP support instructions; do not assume the LaserJet locations or login steps apply to an unrelated series.

If the factory PIN does not work
- The credential was changed: A custom EWS password or PIN replaces the factory credential. Ask the person who administers the printer for the current one.
- The label is missing or has no PIN: HP advises contacting the printer administrator if the PIN is not listed or the sticker is missing. Its EWS credential guidance covers this situation.
- You are considering a reset: Do not start with a factory reset. For the cited LaserJet Pro families, HP says a reset may be needed after a forgotten custom EWS password, and the procedure depends on the model. HP+ printers also need to reconnect to HP Cloud services after a reset. Consult the model-specific instructions before proceeding.
Keep the credentials straight

Older Jetdirect print servers are a separate case
Legacy Jetdirect print servers can have separate password behavior, including behavior affected by synchronization with the printer. If you are administering an older or managed network setup, use HP’s Jetdirect password guidance rather than applying modern printer EWS steps.
